Chapter 3
The final straw? This storm that came out of nowhere.
Right before finals, weather was so hot and muggy you couldn’t breathe.
That afternoon after school, Garrett and I were supposed to walk home together.
I
got to the gate and saw Harper standing there in the rain with an umbrella. Garrett was taking off his jacket, putting it on her shoulders.
Harper was soaking wet, shivering, eyes all red. Looking so fucking helpless.
“Garrett… I’m so sorry… I just wanted to bring you an umbrella… I slipped…”
I stood there with my own umbrella, feeling like a complete idiot.
Garrett saw me. For a second, he looked panicked. Then he said:
“Sloane, just head home, okay? I gotta take Harper to the nurse. Her knee’s fucked up.”
I looked at his worried face. Looked at Harper hiding behind him, giving me this little smirk.
My heart went cold.
I didn’t say anything. Just turned around and left.
Rain was pouring down. My umbrella didn’t do shit.
Rain mixed with tears. I couldn’t see anything.
That night, Garrett didn’t come over for dinner. Didn’t even call.
Next day at school, rumors started spreading.
“Oh my god, did you hear? Sloane literally pushed Harper. Like, shoved her into the rain.”
“Wait, what? No way. Sloane?”
“YES. Harper got like super sick. High fever and everything.”
“That’s insane. I didn’t think Sloane was like that.”
“Are you kidding? She’s totally jealous. Harper and Garrett have been hanging out and Sloane’s losing it.”
“Right? I heard she like, got a whole group of girls to gang up on her too.”
“Ew, that’s so fucked up,”
I went to find Garrett. Wanted him to clear this shit up.
What I got instead was this:
“Sloane, why can’t you just be a better person? Harper already said it was an accident. She slipped. Why are you still making this a huge thing?”

Chapter 3
I just… stare at him.
He actually believes this shit. He believes her.
“Garrett.” My voice comes out shaky. “Are you fucking serious? You really think I did that?”
He went quiet.
That silence hurt more than anything he could’ve said.
Our relationship ended right there. In that hallway. In that silence.
Finals, I bombed. Completely bombed.
Day I checked my scores, I locked myself in my room and cried all day.
My parents were outside the door, trying to comfort me.
“Sloane, baby, it’s just one test. One test doesn’t mean you’re not good enough.”
“We’ll figure it out, kiddo. Community college for a year, then transfer. Or take the SATs again in the fall. Whatever you need.”
“Just eat something, please. You haven’t had anything all day.”
I thought, yeah. Okay.
So I lost Garrett. So I fucked up my SATS. I still have parents who love me. I can start over.
But I had no idea how much worse it was about to get.
