Hearing the girl’s words become more and more absurd, Rebecca couldn’t help but cut her off sharply..
She frowned, rummaging in her bag for a tissue to wipe the
tears from Lillie’s face.
Lillie shoved her away, wiping her face messily with the back of
her hand.
“Stop pretending to care. I don’t need it.”
“Listen to me.”
Rebecca’s tone was unusually serious, tinged with heaviness.
“Your brother and I.”
She spoke very slowly, making sure Lillie could hear every
single word clearly.
“We were never together, and we never expressed any feelings
for each other. Do you understand?”
Lillie froze.
The anger and sadness on her face froze, as if she hadn’t
understood the words.
“What… did you say?”
After what felt like a long time, she spoke in a daze, her voice trembling slightly.
“How is that possible? My brother… he was so obviously in love with you. The way he looked at you… it was different from how he looked at anyone else.”
“Yes, Leo…”
Rebecca’s voice was a little tight. “He might have had some feelings for me.”
Mentioning the man who had once left such a deep mark on her life still made Rebecca feel uneasy.
“I’m also very grateful to him. If he hadn’t pulled me out of that
abyss, the Rebecca you see today wouldn’t exist.”
She gave a bitter smile, quickly composed herself, and looked
up to meet Lillie’s eyes.
“But Lillie, we weren’t together. And I never thought of myself as
your sister–in–law.”
She watched the color drain from Lillie’s face as she continued to explain, her voice filled with endless exhaustion and sorrow.
“In the past, I did struggle with what Leo meant to me. Was it a love that I had mistaken?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“No, Lillie. My feelings for him weren’t romantic love.”
So, there was no betrayal.
And no being ungrateful.
She would never forget the kindness Leo had shown her.
When Madeleine returned, she only saw the complicated looks on their faces. Holding a Bubble Tea, she walked over quickly.
“Rebecca, what’s wrong?”
The atmosphere felt a little off. Madeleine naturally walked over
to Rebecca’s side, warily watching the girl across from them.
The girl didn’t look very old, and she was crying her eyes out.
If this had been before, Madeleine might have actually
suspected Rebecca of bullying the young girl.
“It’s okay, don’t worry.”
Rebecca whispered to Madeleine, and fearing‘ Lillie might do something irrational in her emotional state, she pulled Madeleine’s hand to get her to step behind her.
But Madeleine’s gaze remained locked on Lillie, and this wariness made Lillie’s heart inexplicably flutter with panic.
She subconsciously took half a step back, her sobs catching in her throat. Only her shoulders were still trembling slightly, making her look a bit helpless and pathetic.
“Go home, Lillie.”
Rebecca looked at her, feeling a bit helpless.
“The thing between your brother and me, when I have time, I’ll
explain it all to you properly, okay?”
She raised her hand and glanced at her watch.
“It’s getting late. I’ll call a car for you.”
“No need.”
Chapter 276
Lillie’s voice was hard as she stared fiercely into Rebecca’s
eyes.
“Rebecca, next week is my brother’s death anniversary. I just
hope you haven’t forgotten that day.”
After saying this, Lillie turned and ran off quickly. As she ran,
you could see her raise a hand to wipe away her tears.
Madeleine just stood there beside Rebecca, quietly, without
making a sound.
She glanced at Rebecca. Although she didn’t know the whole story, she guessed something from their fragmented
conversation and expressions.
She had heard Roderick mention the story about Rebecca and
Leo.
That young girl, it seemed, was Leo’s sister.
“Rebecca.”
Madeleine placed a hand on Rebecca’s shoulder, her tone
gentle.
