Chapter 108

Clara never intended to go through with IVF with Ethan, so she hadn’t bothered to check the test results.

When Ethan called, she was at her apartment, using the photos Anthony sent to simulate what Sophie might look like as an adult.

“What’s up?”

Clara answered, her fingers lightly tracing the stylus on the tablet. The screen slowly generated a rendering of Sophie as an adult.

Pixels coalesced into clear features, and she felt a strange familiarity with the woman’s eyes, but she couldn’t place where she’d seen

them before.

“Clara, we’re not divorced yet. What the hell have you been doing lately? How could you contract something like this?!”

Ethan’s voice was a suppressed roar of fury, leaving Clara utterly bewildered.

“What disease are you talking about?”

“The test results are out. Didn’t you even bother to look at them?”

Ethan stared at the printed test report, his fingers gripping the phone, knuckles white with rage.

“Or did you never intend to have another child to save Luke? Was agreeing to the tests just a way to tell me you’ve found someone new, forcing me to let you go, to get a divorce?!”

“Clara, let me tell you, don’t even think about it. Who is he?!”

“Is it Ryan Walker or Mason Walker?!”

“Ethan, what are you implying?”

A barrage of accusations, like a storm of bullets, shattered Clara’s patience, and her tone turned icy.

“What do you mean?”

Ethan scoffed, the sarcasm in his voice almost tangible.

“You didn’t think I could access your test results, did you?”

Clara blinked, then switched her phone to speaker and opened the hospital’s app.

“Key Indicators: Persistent High–Risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, accompanied by genital inflammation, confirmed diagnosis: Genital Warts.”

“Medical assessment indicates your current physical condition is not suitable for pregnancy. Attempting to conceive could lead to fetal deformities, miscarriage, and the risk of vertical transmission from mother to child.

“Considering your past history of miscarriages, we recommend prioritizing antiviral treatment and temporarily ceasing any pregnancy plans.”

After clearly seeing the contents of the medical report, Clara was stunned. She thought the hospital had made a mistake and repeatedly refreshed the page, but the content on the screen never changed.

Clara’s heart skipped a beat. She knew her body very well. She had been well–behaved and faithful throughout her marriage, never crossing any boundaries. How could she have contracted such a disease?

“Wrong?”

Ethan’s tone carried a hint of sarcasm.“You chose the hospital and the doctors yourself. What could be wrong?”

He paused, his voice laced with exhaustion.“Clara, I know I’ve wronged you in the past.”

“But I’ve genuinely wanted to make amends lately. Why would you do this to me? Why would you sleep with another man…”

He didn’t finish his sentence, but the implication was clear: he had already concluded that Clara had cheated on him during their marriage and contracted à venereal disease.

“The Bennett family has been contacting me these past few days. Richard has been indirectly confirming with me whether I’m really planning to have a second child with you.”

Before Clara could respond, Ethan’s voice crackled through the receiver again.

“Did you two plan this, to have another child so you can secure your mother’s shares in the Bennett family?”

“Clara, do you really think Richard will still give you those shares after seeing this report?”

Clara stared at the lab results, considering if she should just agree with Ethan and bring up the divorce again, gauging his willingness to finally agree.

As for the Bennett family shares… she could figure something else out.

But then she thought about Natalie’s lack of movement these past few days; they still hadn’t caught her red–handed stealing data from Blade. If this matter blew up, who knew what kind of complications might arise on that end.

She couldn’t let her efforts be for nothing.

Clara narrowed her eyes.“Ethan, I told you, there’s something wrong with this report. If you don’t believe me, call the hospital yourself.” After hanging up, Clara refreshed the page again, confirming that it wasn’t a glitch in the hospital’s system. She was about to call Eric to ask what was going on, but before she could find his number in her contacts, Richard called.

“Clara, you’ve truly disappointed me. I never imagined someone like you could come from the Bennett family.”

Clara scoffed. It seemed Richard already knew about the test results and was calling to reprimand her.

“Well, I’m so sorry to hear that, but I didn’t realize I was even considered a Bennett.”

Hearing Clara’s attitude, Richard raised his voice,“Clara!”

“I’m telling you, you won’t get a single share of your mother’s stock. I’ll have the lawyer prepare the documents immediately, so you’ll completely lose the right to inherit any shares!”

“Okay, whatever.”

Clara stood up and poured herself a glass of water, “Just make sure you’ve thought through the consequences.

“If I don’t get the shares, then Grand Horizon can forget about getting the civilian cooperation rights for Blade!”

Ignoring Richard’s shouting, Clara hung up the phone, found Eric’s number, and dialed.

should have a result soon.”

“Good.”

death.”

“I trust him with my life. He wouldn’t illegally transmit data, let alone even glance at something that wasn’t his.”

Clara looked at the notification and nodded.“I believe you.”

She took out her own phone, opened her medical report, and handed it to Ryan.“There’s something wrong with my test results. I was diagnosed with a high–risk HPV infection and genital warts, and they said it’s not suitable for pregnancy.”

“This must be part of the setup against him. I suspect the Hayes family is involved.”

“You know, my dear aunt’s family.”

She added a quick explanation, just in case Ryan wasn’t familiar with the Hayes family.

“This is exactly why I came to find you.”

Ryan didn’t even glance at her phone. He’d already seen the report after he heard about Robert.

Knowing her as well as he did after the past few weeks, he didn’t need to think twice to realize someone was pulling strings behind the

scenes.

“The person who reported Robert is Daniel Lee, the associate director at the Hospital Reproductive Center.”

“He works at the hospital, but he’s not ex–military. He’s been stuck as an associate director for years, with no promotion in sight.”

“The Hayes family must have promised him something, which is why he went after Robert.”

“After Robert was taken away, Daniel took over all the follow–up work for your IVF treatment with Ethan. He must have tampered with your test results.”

Clara nodded, understanding dawning on her face as she pieced everything together.“That makes sense.”

Emma and Patricia were panicking because of Robert’s arrest, so they tried to drive a wedge between her and Ethan by falsifying her medical report, hoping the Carter family would drop their pursuit of Robert.

At the same time, they got rid of Robert as an obstacle and replaced him with Daniel, so they could continue to manipulate the IVF process later on. A real two–birds–one–stone situation.

“Natalie Parker hasn’t made a move yet, so we can’t spook them. We have to keep playing the IVF game for now.”

Clara handed Ryan a glass of water.“But Daniel Lee is Patricia’s man, we can’t let him take over. We have to get Eric out first.”

Ryan took the glass and drained it in one gulp.
