Chapter 138
In the hallway, the two officers quickly called their superiors.
“Sir, Olivia Bennett’s apartment is suspicious. There were two used glasses on the coffee table, the doormat was disturbed, and she seemed flustered and evasive.”
“We have reason to believe Daniel Quinn is hiding inside. Requesting an immediate search warrant and reinforcements to secure all exits and prevent his escape!”
The response was immediate.“Application approved. The search warrant is being sent electronically. The SWAT team is en route. Secure all exits. Do not let Quinn escape!”
The police moved with impressive efficiency.
Within twenty minutes, five police cruisers, avoiding main streets, arrived silently via side routes, parking in concealed spots near the apartment building.
Doors flew open, and officers in plain clothes spilled out, moving with the swiftness of panthers, rapidly dispersing to the surrounding intersections, building entrances, and the underground parking garage entrance.
Leo Jefferson, the head of the SWAT team, dressed in black tactical gear and holding the apartment building’s blueprints, strode to the temporary command post.
“Team One, secure the main entrance and the underground parking garage exits. Screen everyone coming in and out; no unauthorized personnel are to get close.”
“Team Two, block off all fire exits. Establish control on each floor, stay concealed, and avoid stirring up trouble. Team Three…”
“Attention, everyone. Daniel Quinn is suspected of multiple felonies, is armed, and extremely dangerous. If you spot him, issue a warning first. If he doesn’t cooperate, you’re authorized to use force, but make sure to bring him in alive!”
“Yes, sir!”
The officers responded in unison and quickly dispersed, setting up a tight cordon according to the plan.
Inside the apartment, Olivia leaned against the door for a long while. Only after confirming there was no movement in the hallway did she slowly straighten up.
Just as she was about to return to the bedroom, she heard a faint noise from the guest room.
Olivia’s heart tightened. She turned to see Daniel crawling out from under the bed, covered in dust, his face still frighteningly grim.
He raised a hand to brush off the dust, his gaze landing on Olivia, filled with lingering anger and a complex, unreadable emotion.
“Where did Richard Bennett move the metal box?”
Daniel’s voice was raspy.
Olivia felt a chill run down her spine under his gaze, instinctively taking a step back until her back hit the armrest of the living room sofa, barely steadying herself.
“I… I don’t know. I really didn’t ask.”
“Don’t know?”

Daniel stepped forward, his speed catching Olivia off guard as he grabbed her wrist.
His fingers were like iron clamps, the force so intense it felt like he was about to crush her bones. A sharp intake of breath escaped Olivia as tears welled up uncontrollably.
Mend
“Eric Clark is Richard Bennett’s right–hand man. After finding out the thing was moved, you didn’t ask him where Richard moved it
to?”
Daniel was enraged by Olivia’s stupidity.
Tears streamed down Olivia’s face as the excruciating pain in her wrist made her struggle.
“I really don’t know! Eric only told me the metal box was moved, he didn’t say where!”
She had been so focused on shifting the blame to Clara, hoping Daniel would help her deal with Clara, that she hadn’t thought that far
ahead.
Daniel stared into her eyes, trying to discern the truth from her expression.
Seeing the panic and pain in her eyes, the grip on her wrist loosened almost imperceptibly.
This was his own flesh and blood, his only tie to this world.
Even if she’d made mistakes, even if her lies had led him to the brink, he couldn’t bring himself to truly hurt her.
But the moment he thought about his carefully laid plans being ruined, about how he was now being hunted by the police like a stray dog, his anger surged back.
“Olivia,”
Daniel’s voice was low, laced with resentment.
“You’ve disappointed me more than I thought possible.”
“I could have helped you get everything you wanted, helped you crush Clara beneath your feet.”
“But what did you do? You lied to me!”
“Don’t think I don’t know what you were trying to do, using this as an opportunity to have me deal with Clara!”
“How can you be so short–sighted? Do you even realize that because of your one lie, I almost lost everything!”
Olivia bit her lip, tears welling up in her eyes.“I didn’t mean to… I didn’t think it would turn out like this.”
Seeing her like this, Daniel took a deep breath, suppressing the complex emotions swirling within him.
Now isn’t the time to dwell on blame. Our priority is getting out of here.
The police already came by once. Clearly, they didn’t buy Olivia’s story, but they couldn’t force their way in without a warrant.
If I stay here until they get one, I’m as good as caught!
With that realization, Daniel released Olivia’s wrist and glared at her.
“I’m giving you three days. I don’t care how you do it, you need to get the location of that metal box from Eric. Otherwise, you’ll face the consequences.”
Olivia rubbed her bruised wrist, not daring to argue, and simply nodded.

Daniel ignored her, swiftly moving to the window. He cautiously peeked through a gap in the curtains, surveying the scene below
In the darkness, he spotted several suspicious figures guarding the building’s entrance, and his heart sank.
The police had indeed set up a perimeter.
Daniel’s brow furrowed deeply, a sense of dread washing over him.

He quickly began calculating escape routes. He had familiarized himself with the apartment building’s layout before. Besides the main entrance and the underground parking garage, there was a fire escape leading to the rooftop.
The main entrance and the parking garage were undoubtedly under heavy surveillance. Trying to exit from there would be like walking
into a trap.
It seemed his only option was to find a way out via the rooftop.
Daniel turned to look at Olivia, his expression a complex mix of emotions–resentment, disappointment, and a hint of concern that even he didn’t fully recognize.
“I’m leaving. Take care of yourself.”
With that, he didn’t linger. He opened the apartment door and headed towards the fire escape.
Olivia watched his figure disappear through the doorway, a swirl of conflicting emotions churning within her.
With Daniel gone, she no longer had to live in fear of being discovered by the police, nor did she have to worry about being implicated
in tonight’s events.
But now that Daniel was gone, would he still honor his previous promises?
Now that he was wanted by the police, would he still have the means to help her deal with Clara and gain the Bennett family’s favor?
Without Daniel’s help, how would she ever stand a chance against Clara?
How could she ever get Richard to value her again?
Overwhelmed and frustrated, she slumped onto the sofa, feeling utterly powerless.
She had no idea what to do next.
Daniel made his way up the fire escape until he reached the top floor and saw the iron door that led to the rooftop.
He paused, listening intently for any sounds outside the door, After confirming there was nothing, he slowly pushed the door open and slipped out.
The wind on the rooftop was strong, howling as it whipped through, tossing his hair and fluttering the edges of his clothes.
The night air was crisp, and the cool breeze cleared his head a little.
He walked to the edge of the rooftop, gripped the railing, and looked down.
The
apartment building was surrounded by police; several patrol cars were parked in the shadows, headlights off.
Officers were stationed at the building entrances and intersections, forming an impenetrable net. Escaping from here seemed impossible.
Daniel pulled a cigarette from his pocket, lit it, and took a long drag.

The harsh smoke made him cough a few times, but it also helped him regain his composure.
He leaned against the railing, his eyes filled with a terrifying darkness, and a self–deprecating smile twisted his lips.

He couldn’t believe that a minor player like Clara Bennett and one poorly executed plan had turned him into a wanted criminal, forcing him to hide on a rooftop like a stray dog.
Richard Bennett was such a waste. If he valued those things so much, how could he have let his own son uncover them?
And Olivia… that girl was nowhere near as sharp as Diane was back in the day.
Daniel took another deep drag of his cigarette, and his eyes grew even more ferocious through the swirling smoke.
No, he couldn’t just accept defeat like this.
The information in that metal box was a matter of life and death, and it was tied to years of planning. He had to get his hands on it.
And Ryan Walker and Clara Bennett–he’d settle the score with them, sooner or later.
Daniel Quinn stubbed out his cigarette and began to carefully assess the rooftop, trying to find a viable escape route.
One side of the rooftop was close to another apartment building, the distance between the two buildings was about fifteen to twenty feet, with nothing in between.
For the average person, jumping that gap would be next to impossible, but for Daniel Quinn, it might be a slim chance.
At the same time, the search warrant had been approved.
Leo Jefferson, holding the warrant, led several officers to Olivia Bennett’s apartment door once again and knocked.
“Ms. Bennett, we’re officers from the West Side Police Station. We have a search warrant. Please cooperate with our search.”
Inside the apartment, Olivia Bennett’s heart hammered in her chest at the sound of the knocking.
She hadn’t expected the police to come so quickly, or that they’d get a warrant!
Thank God Daniel Quinn was gone. Even if they had a warrant, as long as they didn’t find him there, she wouldn’t be implicated. Olivia took a deep breath and hurried to the door. Peeking through the peephole, she saw five police officers standing outside. Leading them was the same stern–faced officer who had visited before. The four officers behind him were in uniform, with guns on their hips, looking vigilant.
Olivia’s palms instantly began to sweat. She took another deep breath, trying to keep her voice steady, and forced a stiff smile as she opened the door, feigning composure.
“Officers, why are you back? Didn’t you already ask everything earlier?”
“We have a search warrant. Please step
aside.”
Leo’s tone was stern as his eyes sharply scanned the apartment.
Olivia didn’t dare to resist and could only step aside.
The officers immediately entered the apartment and began searching methodically.
They thoroughly checked every room, including the bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and bathroom, not even overlooking the closets

and under the beds.
Olivia stood by, her palms sweating.

When they got to the living room, the officers noticed the scattered fake documents. They picked them up, flipped through a few pages, and then glanced at the two water glasses on the coffee table, their expressions growing more serious.
“What are these documents?”
Leo Jefferson picked up one of the fake agreements and looked at Olivia Bennett.
Olivia’s heart skipped a beat as her eyes darted to the coffee table, silently cursing Daniel Quinn.
He hadn’t taken these things with him when he left!
“Those are… discarded documents from a project I was working on at my company. They’re useless, and I just haven’t had a chance to throw them away yet.”
Leo didn’t press the issue, but he gave her a long, hard look.
After a thorough search lasting over half an hour, the officers found no sign of Daniel Quinn in the apartment.
“No sign of the suspect, Captain Jefferson.”
An officer reported to Leo.
Leo’s brow furrowed. He had received information that Daniel Quinn was most likely hiding here. How could he be gone?
He turned to Olivia, his gaze scrutinizing.“Ms. Bennett, are you sure Daniel Quinn hasn’t been here?”
“I really don’t know him. Why would he come to my place?”
Olivia’s eyes darted away, but her tone held a hint of conviction.
Leo stared at her for a long moment, but couldn’t detect any sign of deception on her face. He finally ordered, “Let’s go.”
At his command, the officers gathered their search equipment and exited the apartment in an orderly fashion.
Before leaving, Leo Jefferson glanced at Olivia Bennett again and said sternly, “Ms. Bennett, if you remember any leads later, or discover anything unusual, be sure to contact us immediately.”
“Also, don’t try to hide anything; harboring a fugitive is a legal offense.”
“I understand, officer,”
Olivia Bennett nodded quickly, but breathed a sigh of relief inwardly.
Watching the police officers disappear into the hallway, Olivia Bennett immediately closed the door, leaned against it, and gasped for breath. Her back was already soaked with cold sweat, and her legs gave way, causing her to slide down to the floor.
Meanwhile, at the Military Medical Center.
Ryan Walker supported Nathan Lewis as they hurried into the emergency room.
“Doctor! Hurry! He’s badly injured!”
Ryan Walker’s voice was tinged with urgency.

Medical staff immediately came forward, lifted Nathan Lewis onto a stretcher, and wheeled him into the operating room.
“Family members wait outside.”
The nurse said to Ryan Walker before closing the operating room doors.
Ryan Walker stood outside the operating room, watching the red light illuminate above the door, his heart filled with guilt.
Nathan Lewis had been kidnapped by Daniel Quinn and suffered such severe injuries because of him.
If it weren’t for him, Nathan would be living a peaceful, stable life right now, instead of lying in the emergency room, his life hanging in
the balance.
Ryan leaned against the wall, raising a hand to rub his churchs.
His body hadn’t fully recovered yet, and the earlier shootout and chase at the factory had left him feeling drained, a dull ache in his
chest.
But he couldn’t rest easy about Nathan, so he could only wait patiently outside the emergency room.
Minute after minute ticked by, and finally, the light above the emergency room door went out.
The doctor emerged, pulling off his mask, a hint of fatigue on his face.“The patient is out of immediate danger, but he has multiple injuries, as well as severe dehydration and malnutrition. He’ll need to rest and recover properly.”
