Chapter 137
7:00 PM.
Clara finished the last document on her desk, rubbed her tired churchs, and pulled out her phone to dial Ryan Walker’s number.
She had thought that now that she had handed over the information in the metal box to Chris Evans, the police would handle the rest, and both she and Ryan Walker could finally rest for a few days.
But Ryan Walker didn’t answer the phone.
Clara frowned, a sense of unease rising in her chest. She quickened her pace, heading towards the parking lot. She got in her car and drove to the Y Military Medical Center.
Arriving at the hospital, she pushed open the door to find the room silent.
She noticed that the other bed clearly had someone staying in it, but the
person was nowhere to
be seen.
A flicker of confusion crossed Clara’s eyes as she turned and left the room.
After confirming with the nurse on duty that Ryan Walker had taken a leave of absence and left the hospital, her anxiety reached a fever pitch.
Meanwhile, Ryan Walker was driving towards the West Side Abandoned Factory.
Inside the abandoned factory.
Daniel Quinn looked at Nathan Lewis, who was tied to a pillar in the center of the factory, and a smirk tugged at his lips.
Seeing that it was almost time, he had a dozen of his men lie in ambush and ordered, “All of you, be alert! As soon as Ryan Walker hands over the metal box, take him down immediately. If he tries anything funny, kill this guy!”
“Yes, sir!”
His men responded in unison, eagerly rubbing their hands together.
Outside the factory, Ryan Walker’s car slowly came to a stop.
He pushed open the car door, took the metal box from the passenger seat as described by Victor Bennett, and walked towards the factory.
Inside the factory, the lighting was dim, with only the central light illuminating Daniel Quinn, who was sitting in a circular chair, and Nathan Lewis, who was covered in injuries, beside him.
“Ryan Walker, you actually came.”
Seeing the metal box in Ryan Walker’s hand, Daniel Quinn grinned.
Indeed, people are selfish creatures. When it comes to their own interests versus the woman they love, they will always choose the
former.
Ryan Walker’s gaze swept the surroundings, finally landing on Nathan Lewis, who was tied to a pillar, a flicker of guilt in his eyes.
The
guy
had come to save him, yet was dragged into this mess and tortured like this by Daniel Quinn!

How innocent!
“Let him go.”
Ryan Walker raised the metal box in his hand.“I brought the stuff. As soon as you release him, I’ll give it to you.”
“Do you think you’re in a position to bargain with me?”
Daniel Quinn toyed with a dagger, glancing at Ryan Walker with a careless air.
“Put the box on the ground. I’ll release him once I’ve verified the authenticity of its contents.”
A cold glint flickered in Ryan Walker’s eyes as he slowly placed the metal box on the ground.
“Daniel, you’d better keep your word, or the contents of this box will be on the city police’s desks first thing tomorrow morning.”
Daniel Quinn raised his hand, and a subordinate emerged from the darkness to pick up the metal box from the ground.
He’d known all along that once the item fell into Ryan Walker’s hands, he would definitely make a backup.
His purpose in getting the metal box was solely to blackmail Richard Bennett.
As for Ryan Walker, now that he’d seen the contents, he shouldn’t even think about leaving here alive today!
The henchman warily approached Ryan, gun raised and pointed at his chest, as he crouched down to examine the metal box.
“Open it.”
Daniel instructed.
He only needed to verify the authenticity of the contents.
The henchman did as he was told, lifting the lid to reveal dark red velvet lining. Inside, the meticulously crafted ledger, agreement copies, and replicated lists were so convincing that even the aged, yellowed paper had been perfectly imitated.
He quickly flipped through a few pages and nodded to Daniel.“It’s real.”
A smug grin spread across Daniel’s face.“Bring him over.”
Two more henchmen emerged from the shadows and untied Nathan, each taking one of his arms as they guided him toward Ryan.
Ryan stepped forward, reaching out to support him, but Daniel suddenly whistled sharply.
Instantly, more armed men emerged from the shadows around the factory, encircling Ryan and Nathan, their weapons trained on
them.
“Daniel, you went back on your word!”
Ryan shielded Nathan behind him, his eyes like chips of ice.
“The ends justify the means.”
Daniel sneered.“I want more than just the Metal Box, Ryan. I want your
lives!”
“Once you’re both dead, no one can trace anything back to me.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the piercing sound of police sirens suddenly blared from outside the factory, growing louder and louder as they approached.

Daniel’s face contorted in fury.“How could the police be here?”
“Did you really think I’d come alone?”
Ryan smirked, a hint of mockery in his eyes.“I notified the SWAT team the moment I got your message.”
Menu
He had anticipated Daniel’s treachery. Before leaving, he had arranged with the SWAT team leader to use the sirens as a signal for a coordinated raid.
“Damn it!”
Daniel roared, his eyes turning even more savage.“Kill them both!”
His men immediately opened fire, bullets whizzing toward Ryan and Nathan.
Ryan was ready. He yanked Nathan down, both of them hitting the ground hard. At the same time, he pulled a smoke grenade from his waistband, yanked the pin, and hurled it into the crowd.
A cloud of white smoke billowed out, obscuring vision, as coughs and curses erupted from all around them.
“Sorry about that.‘
Ryan Walker hoisted the injured Nathan Lewis onto his back and, using the smoke as cover, sprinted toward the factory’s back door.
Seeing this, Daniel Quinn knew he wouldn’t be able to keep Ryan Walker here today.
He quickly ran to the metal box, yanked out whatever was inside, and ordered,“Get out of here!”
With that, he bolted toward a pre–planned escape route.
Hearing this, his men covered each other, firing several shots toward the sound of the approaching sirens.
Creating chaos and ensuring the police couldn’t immediately breach the building, they followed Daniel Quinn into the escape tunnel.
By the time the SWAT team stormed into the factory, all they found was a scene of devastation, a few stragglers who hadn’t managed to escape, and Ryan Walker supporting Nathan Lewis in the smoke.
“Mr. Walker, are you alright?”
He rushed forward.
“I’m fine, but Nathan Lewis is badly injured. He needs to get to a hospital immediately.”
Ryan Walker’s eyes scanned the surroundings.“Daniel Quinn got away. He must have had a backup escape plan.”
The officer in charge frowned, ordering his men, “Seal off all roads around the factory immediately! Conduct a thorough search. We have to catch Daniel Quinn!”
“Yes, sir!”
The police sprang into action, flooding the factory inside and out with light, the blare of sirens mingling with the sounds of footsteps
and shouts.
Seeing the scene unfold, Ryan Walker shook his head. He doubted they’d catch Daniel Quinn tonight.
Daniel raced through the hidden passage for more than ten minutes before finally emerging from an abandoned sewer, covered in mud and looking utterly disheveled.

Without bothering to clean himself, he quickly stripped off his outer jacket, tossing it into a nearby trash can, revealing the casual clothes he’d been wearing underneath.
He warily scanned his surroundings, and after confirming he wasn’t being followed by the police, he hailed a cab and gave the driver an
address.
As the car sped through the night, Daniel leaned back against the seat, his face as dark and heavy as a thundercloud.
He’d begun investigating Ryan the moment he found out that Ryan had been hiding his identity to help Clara Bennett.
Unfortunately, Ryan had spent so many years in the military that Daniel couldn’t dig up much.
But when he finally discovered Ryan was ill and searching for a bone marrow donor, he used his old connections to find Nathan Lewis,
who was a match.
His plan had been to use Nathan as bait to lure Ryan out, while also getting Olivia Bennett to swipe the documents about their past
collaboration from Richard Bennett.
With Ryan Walker out of the picture as Clara Bennett’s backer, and the biggest leverage against Richard Bennett in his hands, the entire Bennett family would be his for the taking.
He hadn’t expected his scheme to backfire so spectacularly. Not only did Ryan Walker slip through his fingers tonight, but he’d also attracted the cops, leading to a significant loss!
Lost in thought, he barely noticed the taxi pulling up in front of a luxury apartment building. Daniel Quinn paid the fare, hurried inside, and took the elevator to the fifteenth floor.
He knocked on a security door. The peephole darkened, and after a moment, the door cracked open.
Olivia Bennett peeked out, her face instantly paling as she recognized Daniel Quinn.“Mr. Quinn?”
Daniel Quinn pushed the door open, stepped inside, and slammed it shut behind him, leaning against it as he gasped for breath. His eyes were fierce.“Ryan Walker set me up. I need to lie low here for a while. I’ll leave as soon as the heat dies down.”
Olivia Bennett instinctively took a step back, her eyes wide with resistance and panic.
“No! Mr. Quinn, it’s too dangerous here. The police could come at any moment. I can’t harbor you!”
Never in her wildest dreams had she imagined Daniel Quinn would suddenly show up at her place seeking refuge.
This apartment was originally arranged for her by Diane Bennett. After returning to Grand Horizon, knowing that Richard Bennett didn’t favor her much, she didn’t dare to stay at the Bennett family villa and moved here.
She intended to keep a low profile, but if it were discovered that she was involved with Daniel Quinn, not only would she be unable to help Diane Bennett escape punishment, but she herself would be implicated.
Daniel Quinn’s eyes suddenly darkened.
This was his own daughter, the only bloodline he had left in this world.
To give her a better life, he sent her and Diane Bennett to the Bennett family.
Over the years, he secretly watched her grow up, quietly paving the way for her, and never dared to reveal his identity for her safety.
But now,
when he was in trouble and needed help, she avoided him like the plague, without even a moment’s hesitation. Daniel Quinn suppressed the bitterness and anger in his heart, a sinister smile curling at the corner of his lips, “Do you think you
have a

choice?”
“If you refuse to take me in, and I get caught by the police after leaving here, do you think I won’t turn you in?
“At that point, do you think Richard Bennett will still acknowledge you as his daughter? And how do you think the police will treat you?”
Olivia’s face instantly turned pale, and her body began to tremble uncontrollably.
Seeing Olivia’s distraught expression, Daniel threw out another lure.
“If you help me get through this, I’ll still do what I promised, and I’ll make sure Clara Bennett’s reputation is ruined.”
On one side, the risk of utter disgrace; on the other, everything she had ever dreamed of.
Olivia’s eyes shifted as she battled with herself, then she bit her lip, as if making a huge decision.
“Fine, I’ll take you in, but you have to stay in the guest room. You can’t come out without my permission, and you can’t cause any
trouble!”
Daniel nodded in satisfaction, pushing open the door to the guest room.
“Don’t worry, I won’t make things difficult. I’ll leave as soon as things have calmed down.”
Olivia watched him close the door, her chest heaving, her face full of resentment and fear.
She had no idea what the consequences of harboring Daniel would be, she just had to take things one step at a time.
Inside the guest room, Daniel locked the door and quickly checked the room for surveillance, breathing a sigh of relief when he found
none.
He took out the documents he had brought from the factory and began to read them.
But the more Daniel read, the darker his expression became.
He remembered every transaction, every payout from the “Project Far Sail” back then with perfect clarity.
Before him, the account book displayed key data that clashed sharply with his memory. Some transactions were entirely unfamiliar.
He grabbed the partnership agreement, scrutinizing the signatures and clauses. While the forgery was decent, the strokes betrayed a different hand.
These documents are fake!
Ryan Walker had deceived him with false information!
He had risked capture by the police, going to great lengths, only to obtain a pile of forgeries.
If his memory of those past events weren’t so clear, he would have been completely fooled.
Daniel Quinn shot to his feet and strode to the door, flinging it open.
Olivia Bennett stood in the living room, pacing restlessly. The sudden noise made her jump.
“What… what are you doing out here?”
Daniel Quinn closed the distance between them and seized her by the collar.
Tell me,” he said, his voice a barely suppressed snarl, “what the hell is going on?”

Olivia Bennett was petrified by his sudden aggression.“Mr. Quinn, what… what do you mean?”
“The metal box!”
Mera
Daniel Quinn spat out the words, his voice thick with rage.“You said Victor Bennett took the metal box and gave it to Clara Bennett! Why is all the information in here fake?”
At those words, Olivia’s pupils constricted, and the color drained from her face.
“Actually… the metal box was never taken by Victor Bennett at all!”
“Eric told me that Victor went to the Old Estate to get the metal box last night, but Richard found out and stopped him. Richard had already moved the metal box!”
Daniel released her abruptly, and Olivia staggered backward, collapsing onto the sofa, bursting into inconsolable sobs.
She had only wanted to turn Daniel’s attention towards Clara, but she hadn’t expected to be exposed so quickly.
Daniel stood frozen, his face so dark it could drip with water.
If he had known this, he wouldn’t have rushed to make a move against Ryan Walker, and he wouldn’t have ended up in this miserable situation, running for his life!
“Idiot!”
Daniel roared, “You idiot, you’ve ruined everything!”
He never imagined that he would be undone by his own daughter’s lies.
Now, not only had he failed to get the real information, but he had also exposed his whereabouts, attracting a police chase.
Daniel trembled with rage, wanting nothing more than to silence Olivia permanently.
But looking at her face, so much like Diane Bennett’s, remembering she was his only daughter, his hand ultimately stayed still.
A sudden knock on the door shattered the deathly silence in the room.
Olivia’s sobs ceased abruptly, her face instantly turning ashen, her eyes filled with terror.
“The police!”
“It must be the police!”
She looked at Daniel Quinn in a panic, her lips trembling.“It’s the police! You have to hide under the bed!”
With that, she rushed toward the guest bedroom and yanked open the curtains.
Daniel Quinn took a deep breath, knowing this wasn’t the time to dwell on it. He grabbed the documents from the table, bent down,
and crawled underneath.
Olivia quickly smoothed her clothes and hair, wiped away her tears with the back of her hand, took a deep breath, and forced herself to walk to the door with a semblance of calm.
Slowly opening the door, she forced a stiff smile.“Officers, is there something I can help you with?”
“Hello, we’re officers from the West District Police Station.”
One of the officers showed his ID.“Are you Ms. Olivia Bennett?”

“Yes… I am.”
Olivia’s voice trembled almost imperceptibly, her eyes darting away, unable to meet the officers‘
gaze.
“We’ve found records showing that you and Daniel Quinn were on the same flight back to the States, and your tickets were purchased using the same phone number,”
The officer cut straight to the chase.“We suspect you’re in contact with Quinn. He’s currently wanted by the police for multiple felonies. Have you seen him recently?”
Olivia’s heart sank like a stone, and her face paled even further. She quickly shook her head.
“No! I don’t know any Daniel Quinn! A friend bought my ticket back home.”
The two officers exchanged a look, suspicion evident in their eyes.
“Ms. Bennett, we need to take a look around. We need your cooperation,”
The other officer stated.
“Do you have a warrant?”
Olivia instinctively blocked the doorway.“I’m a woman living here alone. It’s not right for you to barge in here like this.”
The officers looked uneasy. Time was of the essence, and they hadn’t obtained a warrant yet.
Seeing this, Olivia felt a wave of relief wash over her. She visibly relaxed.
“Since you don’t have a warrant, then please leave.”
With that, she closed the door.
After making sure the police had left, Olivia leaned against the door, gasping for breath. Her back was soaked with cold sweat.
In the hallway.
“There were two used glasses on the coffee table.”
One of the officers spoke up.
“There are signs someone was just here. The doormat was askew.”
The two officers exchanged glances.“Let’s report this. Quinn is likely inside with Bennett.
