Chapter 2
He thought she begged for this marriage?
Fine. Time to set the record straight.
She’d tell him everything.
She knew what he did.
And she wanted out.
Ethan’s phone buzzed. He shot her a “shush” gesture.
“Yeah? What’s up?”
Clara’s gaze dropped to the screen–Olivia.
She couldn’t hear what Olivia said, but she saw Ethan’s lips curve.
“Alright, I’m on my way.”
He stood, pocketing his phone.“Gotta run to the office. We’ll talk later, okay?”
Just like that, he was gone. Door closed. Conversation over.
Clara stared at the screen in front of her, a dry, bitter laugh caught in her throat.
Figures. He really did care about that kid–rushing off to report back to Olivia, no doubt.
She wondered what kind of meltdown they’d have when they found out she’d already gotten rid of the baby.
Clara picked up her phone and texted her lawyer.
Clara: Attorney Brown, if I have solid evidence against Ethan, can I guarantee full custody of my son?”
It was late. She didn’t expect a reply.
She set the phone aside–only to catch movement from the hallway.
Lucas stood there, gripping the railing, eyes cold.
“Mom, why are you so useless?”
Clara froze.
“Dad came home, and you just let him leave.”
Her lips parted, but no words came out.
Lucas went on, voice sharp and angry.
“Since Dad’s gone, there’s no point in me staying either. I’m going back to the mansion.”
He turned, knocking on the nanny’s door, ordering her to pack his things.
“Luke, it’s late. It’s not safe to go back now. Mom will take you tomorrow.”
But he shoved her away.
“Don’t touch me!”
Clara’s heart clenched.
“I thought since you had your check–up today, Dad would stay the night. Guess I was wrong.”
He sneered.“If I’d known, I would’ve gone to Auntie’s instead. At least she lets me see Dad.”
He grabbed the nanny’s hand and walked out, not even glancing back.
Clara stood there, blank, staring after him until the silence pressed in. Then the pain in her lower abdomen flared up again–sharp, relentless.
She turned up the AC, sank onto the couch, and stared at her phone.
After a long moment, she retracted the message to her lawyer.
Her son already hated her. What good was custody?
Fine. She’d give it up–voluntarily.
If Ethan wanted the kid, he could have him.

She’d take the payout and leave.
The next morning, her phone wouldn’t stop ringing.
“Clara Bennett! Do you have any motherly instinct left in you?”
“What if something happened to Lucas?!”
“What did the Carter family ever do to deserve this?”
“You drugged Ethan, trapped him in bed, and got pregnant. He married you out of pity. Have we ever treated you poorly?”
“And now you’re still not satisfied? You pick fights when he’s late, drive him out, and abandon your son?!”
“I’ve never seen such a wicked woman!”
Her mother–in–law–Margaret Carter’s voice shrieked through the phone like broken glass.
Clara let her rant, then calmly switched the phone to silent and tossed it aside.
Whatever Lucas told them last night, she was the villain now.
As always.
When she stepped out of the bathroom, the call had ended.
A new message popped up.
Attorney Brown:“Sorry, Ms. Bennett, missed your text last night. I saw you recalled it–was it urgent?”
Clara leaned back on the couch and typed,
“Nah. Nothing urgent. Just focus on finalizing the divorce. Fast.”
She set the phone down and stared blankly at the ceiling.
Her mind drifted back-
The day she found out she was pregnant with Lucas.
She’d just left the hospital, sitting alone in her car, torn between keeping the baby or not.
Then a line on the radio caught her off guard:
‘He’s come all this way. How could I send him back?’
She burst into tears.
Right then, she’d made her choice. She’d keep the baby–no matter what Ethan’s family said.
Now… she almost laughed at her own foolishness.
She got dressed and headed out.
Time to face what she’d left behind.
Back then, she’d chosen marriage over everything-
including her spot at Lewis Al Research Institute.
Including her mentor, Professor Lewis, whom she’d disappointed most.
Now, she needed back in.
But to do that, she had to earn his forgiveness.
Standing outside the familiar building, she stared up at it, heart heavy.
Seven years.
Even the security guards were all new faces now.
A young guard at the gate looked up.
“Ma’am, you need an appointment to enter.”
Clara didn’t argue. She took out her phone, hoping to contact an old classmate.
But Professor Lewis had blocked her everywhere.
Not a single way to reach him.
Then-
“Well. If it isn’t the great Clara Bennett–our love martyr who dumped academia for a wedding ring.”

Chapter 2
The mocking voice hit her like a slap.
Clara looked up. Sophia Davis, arm–in–arm with Olivia, was walking toward her. Sophia. The same woman who’d always hated how Professor Lewis favored Clara.
After Clara quit, Sophia had stayed–worked her way up, rumor had it she was now one of the institute’s core researchers.
And Olivia?
Well, that made sense. The prodigy from Cambridge joining Lewis AI–totally expected.
Clara forced a polite smile.“Hey, Sophia.”
Sophia’s lips curled. Olivia smiled beside her, sweet and innocent, as if they’d never even met.
“What are you doing here, Clara? Trying to see Professor Lewis?”
Sophia laughed.“Don’t tell me you think he still remembers you?”
Clara ignored her and turned to leave-
But Sophia’s voice stopped her.
“If you really want to get inside, do me a favor.”
She handed Clara a folder.“There’s an investor flying in from the UK. Pick him up at the airport. Make a great impression, and I’ll take see Professor Lewis myself.”
Clara’s eyes flicked over the file.
A setup. No question.
But it was still her best shot at getting in.
She smiled faintly.“Deal.”
Sophia raised an eyebrow, watching her leave.
Perfect. The investor from Walker Venture Partners was a nightmare–arrogant, impatient, impossible to please.
And now, a perfect scapegoat had walked right into her trap.
Beside her, Olivia murmured, “Sophia, won’t Professor Lewis be mad if you let her back
in?”
Sophia snorted.“As if he’d ever see her. She ditched him for a man–like the institute’s some revolving door.”
They turned and disappeared into the building, unaware of the two figures watching from a third–floor window.
“Professor Lewis, isn’t that Clara?”
Brody Stone, his assistant, spoke from behind.
Lewis didn’t answer at first. He just star
out the window, his face unreadable.
Could help
Brody hesitated.“If she came back… maybe she with the Seagull Project;”
The Seagull Project–Lewis Al’s most ambitious program–had been stuck for months. The algorithms weren’t working.
‘Might what?” Lewis cut him off sharply.
“Even if she could fix it, what then?
xt time she decides to ‘go home and play house,‘ we’re left hanging again?”
He turned, voice cold.“If you have time to gossip, do more
He left the office, slamming the door behind him.
Brody sighed, watching his mentor’s re
figure.
wesearch.”
Lewis could talk all he wanted about being over her, but that beat–up thermos Clara gave him seven years ago?
He still carried it everywhere.
Chipped. Peeling. Irreplaceable.
