Chapter 3
In the car, Clara pulled out the folder Sophia had given her.
Turns out, she’d been sent to pick up the founder of Walker Venture Partners–a man who’d been making serious waves lately.
The folder had only the basics. No photo, no personal info.
Even online, he was a ghost.
All she knew was that he’d gone abroad young, made a fortune overseas, and was now coming home to expand his empire.
Clara stopped by a roadside ad shop and rushed a pickup sign.
Traffic was brutal, so by the time she reached the airport, passengers were already filing out.
She hurried toward the arrival gate, sign in hand–but before she could lift it, a familiar voice called out.
“Clara!”
She turned–and her eyes lit
up.“Cousin!”
Emma Anderson. Her uncle’s daughter. Her closest friend growing up.
Clara had lived at her uncle’s place for years; Emma was more like a sister than a cousin.
Emma hugged her tight.“You knew I was coming back today? You came just for me?”
tight. You knew I was com
Normally, Clara would’ve teased her. But today wasn’t about family–it was business.
After a quick explanation, she was ready to leave.
But Emma just laughed and grabbed her hand.“Wait. That guy you’re here for? I actually know him.”
Clara blinked.“You know the founder of Walker Venture Partners?”
know the
Emma winked.“Know him? Please. You know him too.”
Clara froze.“What are you talking about?”
They walked toward baggage claim.
A man stood by the carousel, one hand in his pocket, the other resting on a sleek suitcase.
White T–shirt. Calm, sharp presence.
“Mason!” Emma’s voice rang out.
She darted forward and threw herself into his arms.
He caught her easily, like he’d done it a thousand times, brushing her nose playfully.“What’s got you so hyped?” Clara’s blood turned to ice.
That name. That voice. That face.
Mason Walker.
Her childhood sweetheart. Her first love.
The boy who once promised her forever.
And now–Emma was in his arms.
Clara couldn’t move. Her body went stiff, her pulse roaring in her ears.
Emma looked back, smiling brightly.“Clara, this is Mason Walker. The founder you were supposed to pick up.”
Mason’s gaze lifted–and locked with hers.
That warm smile he’d given Emma vanished.
What replaced it was distant, cold, unreadable.
Clara forced a smile.“Mason. Long time no see.”
His tone was flat.“Long time no see.”
Emma looped her arm through his.“Don’t mind him. He’s just like that–cold with strangers. You’ll get used to it.”
Then, out of nowhere, she added, “Oh, and we’re getting married.”
Her eyes sparkled.“We’re back for good this time. Finally settling down.”

< Chapter 3
Clara stared at her.
They’d grown up together. Shared everything. No secrets–at least, that’s what Clara had thought. Her aunt and uncle might not have known about her and Mason.
But Emma? Emma knew everything.
Clara dropped her gaze.
She wasn’t angry Mason had moved on. She wasn’t even angry Emma had taken him.
She was just… tired.
“What matters is you’re both happy,” she said quietly.“Uncle and Aunt must be thrilled.”
Emma grinned.“Come home with us. We’re having a family dinner tonight.”
Before Clara could refuse, Emma had already pulled her into the car.
They drove all the way to her uncle’s neighborhood before stopping.
As Clara opened the door, a sharp gasp cut through the air.
“Ah!”
“Woof-!”
A massive pit bull burst from behind a hedge, snarling, drool flying from its jaws. Its eyes locked on Clara.
She stumbled back, slamming into the car door, pain shooting up her spine.
“Emma!”
Mason’s voice was like a whip. He yanked Emma behind him, his whole body tensing.
The movement only enraged the dog. It lunged forward–straight for Clara.
Her pupils contracted. Cold sweat soaked her shirt. She couldn’t even scream.
“General! Back!”
A man in sweatpants sprinted from the nearby gym, jerking the leash hard.
The pit bull whimpered, stumbling back, but its eyes stayed locked on Clara, lips curled, tail sweeping low through the bushes.
“Control your dog.”
Mason’s voice dropped, calm but furious.
“Mason, don’t,” Emma said quickly, clutching his arm.“I’m okay. Don’t be mad.”
He pulled her close, shielding her.“Don’t be scared. I’ve got you.”
Clara’s fingers curled into fists, nails biting into her palms.
She stared at the bulletin board by the gate, the community notices flapping in the wind, drowning out the man’s apology.
Mason didn’t even glance her way as he led Emma inside, his arm protectively around her shoulders.
Clara exhaled softly.
So this was love now. Familiar, yet unreachable.
They could never go back.
Not anymore.
Meanwhile, across town.
Professor Henry Lewis sat in his office, thermos in hand. He twisted the cap off–but didn’t drink. Instead, he slammed it onto his desk, jaw tight.
Sophia cornering Clara that morning still burned in his mind.
Walker Venture Partners wasn’t someone you could just “invite.” Even he couldn’t guarantee a meeting with them.
And that glimpse of Clara upstairs–she looked thinner, paler than before.
Good. She deserved it.
He grabbed his phone, stared at the screen for a long moment, then hit a number he hadn’t called in years.
