Chapter 5
Clara never heard back from Ethan.
Instead, her phone buzzed–Grandpa James Carter.
“Clara, come by the main house. I’ll send a driver. That brat Ethan’s back too.”
Just hearing the old man’s commanding tone made her stomach twist.
It was Grandpa Carter who’d forced Ethan to take responsibility all those years ago.
And when her mother–in–law made her life hell, he was the one who made Ethan move out with her.
Seven years of marriage, and she still didn’t know how to tell him she wanted out.
If he’d called both her and Ethan home… he must’ve found out.
The car pulled into the Carter Estate, deep in the Chicago suburbs.

Ethan was already there–leaning against his black Bentley, cigarette in hand, smoke curling around his sharp, cold profile. His jaw was tight. He was pissed.
Clara stepped out, her heels clicking on the bluestone path.
He heard her. Looked up.
His dark eyes–ice cold, distant, with a flicker of contempt.
Her gut clenched. He knew.
“You’re here?”
Ethan’s voice was cool as steel.
“Always so eager, aren’t you?”
Clara said nothing.
“What, cat got your tongue?”
He looked her over, gaze lingering on her stomach.
“Grandpa promised you three percent of the shares once the baby’s born. Think that means you can make trouble now?”
His lips curved into a cruel smirk.“Even if you marry into the Carters, you’re still just a dog I own.”
Clara froze. Her nails dug into her palms.
“Ethan,” she said quietly, “I never cared about being Mrs. Carter.”
He scoffed.
“Didn’t care? You seriously don’t know how much your uncle’s company owes us? Isn’t that why you drugged me, got in my bed, got pregnant, and married in?”
Her chest tightened, breath catching.
Years ago, after she found out she was pregnant, it was Grandpa who came to her hospital appointment.
He promised help for her uncle’s company–if she married Ethan.
She knew the Carters wouldn’t let their heir have a child out of wedlock.
Marriage was the only way to keep her baby,
She thought if Ethan agreed, he’d at least take responsibility.
But to him, she was always just trash.
Her eyes burned.

“Ethan,” she whispered, “let’s get a You’re free.”
He barked a laugh.
“Divorce? So all those years were for nothing? Clara, just behave. Have the baby, and stay out of my business with Emma.” “What the hell did you just say?!”
The furious voice came from behind them.
Grandpa James stormed out, cane pounding the ground, Lucas right behind him.

“You little punk!” the old man roared. “You talk to your wife like that–for another woman?!”
“I told you to cut ties with her! Are you deaf?”
Ethan’s voice was cool, calm–infuriatingly calm.
“Grandpa, Olivia’s different. She’s brilliant. The company needs her.”
*Clara studied AI too!” Grandpa snapped. “Bring her into the company and be done with it!”
Ethan’s eyes slid toward Clara, cold and mocking.
“She’s better off staying home and playing Mrs. Carter.”
His words hit like a knife.
Before Grandpa could explode again, Clara stepped in.
“Grandpa, it’s fine. I’m not joining Carter Group. I’ve got my own work.”
Mason had already confirmed the Lewis AI partnership. Professor Lewis wanted her at the institute in a few days.
Ethan’s dark gaze lingered on her, unreadable.
Grandpa sighed.
“If that punk ever treats you wrong, come to me. Grandpa will handle it.”
Clara smiled faintly.
“I’m fine, Grandpa. You just take care of your health.”
He gave Ethan one last death glare and walked off, cane tapping against the stones.
“Dad.”
A small voice tugged Ethan’s sleeve. Lucas looked up at him, hesitant.
“My birthday’s next week. I really want Mom to come this year. Can she?”
Ethan raised a brow, glancing at Clara.
“Ask her yourself.”
Then he walked off, disappearing over the bridge.
Lucas’s eyes lit up. He ran to Clara, grinning.
“Mom! Dad said you can come! This year I want a mango cake can you make it right there at the party?”
Clara froze.
Lucas was allergic to mangoes–just like her. But he still loved the flavor.
Every year, she’d made him mango–shaped jello instead.
Menu
The Carters always threw grand parties for him, but Margaret and Ethan never introduced her to anyone. She was just there–like help in an
apron.
Ethan’s warning glance still lingered in her mind. Why make things worse?
“Let the staff handle it. I’m not coming.”
Her tone was quiet, final.
Lucas blinked, stunned. Then his little face went red.
“No! I don’t want the staff! I want you!”
He stomped his foot. “I fought so hard for you to come! Everyone will see you’re Mrs. Carter–then no one can steal Dad from you!”
Clara stared at him. A cold smile touched her lips.
So what if everyone knew she was Mrs. Carter?
Ethan would still flaunt Olivia in front of her. She’d still be the joke.
She crouched down, meeting his eyes.
“Luke, I’m your mom, not your maid. I don’t just do whatever you tell me to.”
She stood, opened the car door, and told the maid,
“Take care of Luke. Tell Grandpa I had to leave.”

Then she was gone.
Ethan, smoking under the pavilion, heard the car engine start.
Lucas stomped toward him, face scrunched in frustration.
“Did she agree?”
Lucas’s eyes were red.
“No! She said she won’t come or make me a cake! She told me to ask the maid!”
He huffed.“But I just want my mango cake!”
Clara said no?
Ethan’s eyes flickered–just for a moment.
Every year, she baked the cake herself.
This year, she wouldn’t even show up.
Maybe she really meant it this time.
Maybe she really wanted that divorce.
