Chapter 6
“Clara, you dare threaten me?!”
Clara didn’t care what Lucas or his dad thought about her skipping the birthday party.
The next morning, she showed up at the research institute–sharp, early, and right on schedule–with Professor Lewis.
“Clara?”
Sophia froze, eyes narrowing.“Wow. You’ve got some nerve. How’d you even get in here?”
Then realization hit. Her lips curled.
“Right, of course. You wormed your way into a rich family–guess sneaking into the institute isn’t that hard for
“But this isn’t your playground. You can’t just waltz in and expect to stay.”
“You should go home and play trophy wife.”
Clara stood by the lab door, enduring Sophia’s rant as people passed by, whispering. Her face burned.
“I invited her.”

Henry walked
up the steps, voice calm.“She landed the Walker Venture Partners investment. I agreed to give
Sophia gawked.“Clara? She landed that investment?”

“Walker Venture Partners are impossible to impress! She’s been out of the AI field for years–how could she convince them to invest?”
“She must’ve pulled some shady stunt.”
*Professor, seriously–letting someone like her in? That’ll trash our reputation.”
Henry’s gaze found Clara. She stood her ground, the same fierce spark in her eyes he remembered from years ago.
“You’re all stuck on the ‘MindLink‘ emotional interaction system, right?”
He smiled slightly.“Let Clara take a crack at it. If she can break the bottleneck in three days, she stays.”
Sophia’s lips curved. She didn’t argue–just turned and walked off.
MindLink? In three days? Even Olivia couldn’t solve that. It was a joke.
Lewis clearly didn’t dare turn Clara down outright–not after she’d secured that investment. He just wanted her to fail quietly.
The crowd dispersed. Lewis shot Clara a dismissive glance.
“Your old lab’s still there. Everything’s on the desk. Figure it out yourself–and don’t bother me.”
“Thanks, Professor. I appreciate the chance,” Clara said, voice steady.
If she messed this up, she wouldn’t even have the right to beg for another try.
She stepped into the lab and froze.
It was exactly as she remembered it–same equipment, same faint smell of metal and coffee. Only the stack of new files on the desk marked the passing of time.
She’d walked this place a thousand times in her dreams. Her eyes blurred–but only for a second.
Time was ticking. She rolled up her sleeves and got to work.
For three days straight, she barely slept, refining the emotion recognition algorithm, feeding it fresh data, linking micro–expressions to tone and pitch.
No calls from Ethan. No texts from Lucas. It was like they’d moved on just fine without her.
Three days later, Henry called everyone into the conference room.
Clara stepped in–and froze again.
Mason was there. Sitting at the head of the table like he owned the place–because he did. One hand propped under his chin, pen twirling lazily between his fingers.
“This is Mr. Walker, founder of Walker Venture Partners,” Henry announced once everyone was seated.
“He’s here to pick one of your ongoing projects for investment.”
Henry’s gaze flicked to Clara.“Who wants to start?”
Clara’s grip tightened around her laptop. Her palms went slick.

Before she could speak, Olivia stood. “I’ll go first.”
She connected her laptop and launched her demo.
“My project’s called StarMap. It uses big data to make predictive models with high accuracy for finance and healthcare…”
Her presentation was polished, confident–though a bit rehearsed. Henry nodded, pleased. Then his gaze slid to Clara. The sigh that followed
stung.
Clara knew she’d disappointed him. She took a quiet breath.
When Olivia finished, Clara rose. Her chair screeched against the floor.
Olivia shot her a smug look. Clara didn’t notice.
“My project,” Clara began, “is called MindLink. It uses facial and voice analysis to capture user emotions in real–time–then adjusts its response accordingly.”
Her demo ran smooth and clean. The system’s reaction speed and emotional accuracy crushed every other product. It even solved a core problem that had stumped the team for months.
When she finished, Professor Lewis’s face was unreadable.
But the others? The sneers were gone. Even Olivia’s eyes sharpened with something closer to respect.
“Mr. Walker, your thoughts?” Henry asked.
Mason’s eyes landed on the list–and circled MindLink. A faint smile touched Henry’s lips.
Clara still had it. She knew exactly how to hit that perfect balance between innovation and practicality.
If she secured this investment, her return to the institute would be solid.
But Mason didn’t look at Lewis. He looked straight at Clara–with that cold, assessing stare, like she was a stranger.
“I’m going with StarMap,” he said.
Olivia exhaled in relief, a smug smile flickering across her lips.
Henry frowned.“Mr. Walker, may we know why?”
“StarMap, Mason said flatly, “fits the market better. Broader applications.”
Clara’s blood ran cold. Her fingers trembled.
Everyone could see MindLink was the superior project. But Mason chose StarMap–clearly for reasons that had nothing to do with business.
He didn’t even glance at her as he stood and walked out with Henry to finalize the deal.
Sophia’s voice rang out behind Clara.“Told you. Some people just don’t have what it takes.”
She smirked.“Go home and be a trophy wife. Olivia’s Mr. Carter’s girlfriend and she’s smart. You can’t compete.”
“Sophia,” Olivia cut in softly.“Don’t say that. Mr. Carter and I are just friends.” She turned back to her.“Come on, we’ve got polishing to do.”
Everyone filed out.
Clara stayed, her knuckles white. Then she lifted her chin. Determination burned in her eyes.
She wouldn’t let it go. She’d broken through the bottleneck–she deserved a real answer.
“Mr. Walker! Wait!”
Mason stopped, waved his team ahead, and turned.“Yes?”
“Why StarMap?” Clara asked.
“I already explained.”
“We both know that’s a lie.”
Her voice was calm, firm.“MindLink captures real–time emotions. It’s far more user–friendly than StarMap. If you were actually thinking about market adoption, it’s the obvious choice. So–what’s the real reason?”
Mason smirked.“The real reason? I think a system designed by a woman who climbs her way up for profit is inherently flawed. That reason good enough for you?”
Clara’s fists clenched.“No. We’re talking business, not personal grudges. That’s not fair.”
“Fair?” His brows arched.“Clara, you’re forgetting something. I’m the investor. I call the shots. If you want fair, maybe ask your husband to
invest.”
Her jaw tightened. Then she laughed.“So this is revenge–for me breaking up with you.”

“Damn right it is.” Mason dropped the mask.“I just want to see you suffer. Watch you struggle.”
Her nails dug into her palms, blood beading at the surface. But her voice stayed steady.
“You want revenge? Fine. But not with MindLink.”
Her eyes locked on his. “If you go through with this, I’ll make sure everyone knows what really happened between us. You don’t want your cousin dragged into that, do you?”
Mason’s expression darkened.“Are you threatening me?”

“Just talking, Mr. Walker.” Her tone was cool.“Walker Venture Partners just got back to the country. You need the domestic market more than I do. You wouldn’t blow that up over a grudge.”
“Alright, alright,” Mason muttered, his voice tight. He turned sharply toward Henry’s office. “Follow.”
Clara followed, her pulse pounding.
“I’ve decided,” Mason said once inside.“MindLink isn’t bad. I’ll invest in both projects.”
Henry blinked.“Both?”
“But-” Mason pointed at Clara.“Her name doesn’t go on the credits.”
Clara’s lips pressed into a thin line. She didn’t argue. The investment and the lab were what mattered.
Henry caught her eye, then nodded, approving her restraint.
After signing, Mason stepped out, jaw tight. Her threat still burned in his mind.
“Boss?” his assistant asked cautiously.
“Dig up everything on Clara,” Mason said coldly. “Every connection she’s got to this institute. I want it all.”
The assistant hesitated–then nodded.“Yes, sir.”
