Chapter 58

“M-Mr. Carter…”

Patricia stared at Ethan as he stepped out of the elevator, her face ashen.

Of all the times for him to show up, why now?

The Anderson family was counting on the Carter family’s resources to push the Chicago East Side Development Site forward. If he got angry because of Clara, the Anderson family would be finished.

Her only option now was to explain things before Ethan could say anything.

Making up her mind, Patricia rushed forward, grabbing Ethan’s sleeve without any regard for propriety.

“Mr. Carter, it’s all my fault for not teaching Clara well enough and letting her get confused.”

“If you’re angry, please take it out on me. Punish me however you want, but please don’t take it out on the Anderson family!”

“All these years, my husband and I have genuinely hoped that she and you would have a good life together.”

“Hmm.”

Ethan lowered his gaze, his eyes landing on her hand gripping his sleeve. Her hands were well-maintained, her nails painted a delicate mauve, but they felt particularly jarring to him.

He didn’t speak, his gaze drifting past Patricia, landing on Clara behind her, his dark eyes unreadable. “I’ll handle things here. You can go back.” Patricia wanted to say something more, but she was met with a sharp glare from him, his cold eyes like daggers laced with poison.

She was so frightened that her heart trembled, and the words she was about to say instantly caught in her throat. She could only reluctantly let go of his sleeve, glancing back every step of the way as she walked towards the elevator.

As the elevator doors slid shut, Patricia’s face grew increasingly troubled, her hands trembling uncontrollably.

She frantically pulled out her phone and dialed Emma’s number, her voice shaking as she spoke, “Emma, something terrible has happened! I just ran into Clara with some guy at her apartment.”

“I was hoping to explain things to Mr. Carter, but before I could say anything, he just told me to leave.”

“And that stubborn girl, Clara! From the looks of it, she’s dead set on divorcing Mr. Carter. If she makes him angry enough to take it out on us, the project on the East Side will be ruined! What are we going to do?”

Silence hung in the air for a few seconds before Emma’s voice, unnaturally calm, filled the line.

“Mom, don’t panic. Now that Clara wants to divorce Ethan Carter, I’ll find a way to make her sever ties with the Anderson family.

That way, even if the Carters are angry, they won’t blame us. Just stay out of her business, or you might get burned.”

Hearing Emma’s words, Patricia felt a weight lift from her chest. She quickly agreed, “Alright, alright, I’ll do whatever you say.” She hung up the phone, the elevator doors opened, and she stepped out, her legs feeling weak.

Upstairs, in front of her apartment door, Clara saw Ethan’s grim expression and instinctively stepped in front of Ryan. “Ethan, we’re just colleagues. He’s the one you saw downstairs. Don’t take it out on him.”

Ethan saw Clara standing protectively in front of Ryan. He swallowed hard, then shifted his gaze to Ryan. “Miles, long time no see.”

Miles?

Clara was stunned. She looked at Ryan beside her, her eyes full of surprise.

This was the brother Ethan had been talking about finding?

Ryan’s eyes darkened, but he didn’t say anything.

Ethan turned to Clara and said, “Go inside. I won’t do anything to him.”

He turned back to Ryan.”Come with me.”

Clara tugged worriedly at Ryan’s sleeve and whispered, “Call me if anything happens.”

Ryan thrust the insulated container into her arms and smiled at her.”It’s okay. Eat well. I’ll come back for the container later.”

Ethan watched the exchange between them, his fists clenching unconsciously.

Without another word, he headed towards the elevator. Ryan followed him. Before stepping into the elevator, Ryan turned back and waved at

Clara.

The atmosphere inside the elevator was terrifyingly oppressive.

Where the hell have you been all these years?” Ethan asked, his voice hard.”I sent so many people to look for you, but no one could find any

trace of you.”

“I joined the army. Just got discharged.”

Ryan leaned against the elevator wall, his tone indifferent.”I took my mother’s last name and changed my identity. Of course, you couldn’t find

me.”

He paused, looking up at Ethan, a hint of mockery in his eyes.

“Didn’t you always think I was a stain on the Carter family, wishing I would disappear forever? Why are you looking for me now?”

Ethan frowned, surprised by how much the person who used to be so cautious in the Carter household had changed.

No wonder he couldn’t be found for so many years; he’d changed his last name.

Now that he’d changed his name, he couldn’t really be considered a Carter anymore, but thinking of James Carter’s request, he softened his tone.”Grandpa’s seriously ill, his health is getting worse every day. All he wants now is for you to come back.”

“I’m doing just fine now. What’s the point of going back?”

Ryan raised an eyebrow.”Does the old man feel guilty and want to give me a share of the inheritance?”

Ethan’s frown deepened.”Miles, you’re just a bastard son…”

“Was it my choice to be born?”

Ryan’s face turned uncharacteristically grim.”If your dad hadn’t done what he did to my mom, would I even be here?”

“It’s your Carter family who wronged my mother and me, treating us like a stain and using every means to force us apart.”

“After bringing me back to the Carter family, you treated me with utter disdain. Your mother tormented me overtly and covertly, and you turned a blind eye.”

“Even the old man didn’t care about me, only demanding that I stay alive. Now you’re bringing this up, don’t you think it’s laughable?”

Ethan was left speechless.

He didn’t know much about the previous generation’s affairs, only remembering his mother’s rejection of Ryan when he was a child, and how the family avoided this illegitimate child like the plague.

His attitude softened, and he sighed, “Grandpa will compensate you. He’s actually been thinking about you all these years.”

“Compensate?”

Ryan scoffed, not saying a word.

As if anyone cared about that.

Ethan stared into his eyes, his tone laced with warning, “Regardless, if it weren’t for Grandpa protecting you all those years, you wouldn’t have grown up. Just consider it fulfilling his last wish, and come back with

“Okay.”

me.”

Ethan didn’t expect him to agree so readily. His hand paused on the elevator button, and he added, “Clara is my wife. I don’t want you to get too

involved with her.”

Ryan scoffed.”Didn’t cross your mind she was your wife when you humiliated her in front of everyone?”

Seeing Ethan’s displeased expression, he paused and added, “We’re just colleagues. She often helps me with my kid, so I just look out for her a little more. Nothing else to it.”

Ethan looked up at him.”You’re married?”

“Yeah, my kid’s seven.”

Ryan’s tone was even, offering no further explanation.

Upstairs, Clara sat in the living room. The insulated container in front of her was still steaming, but she had no appetite.

Her mind was consumed with Ethan and Ryan’s conversation. Anxious that Ethan might make things difficult for Ryan, she barely touched her food before setting her chopsticks down.

A knock sounded at the door.

Clara hurried to answer it, finding Ethan and Ryan standing there. Their expressions seemed calm enough, and the anxiety in her heart eased slightly.

Ethan didn’t miss the worried look she gave Ryan, and a strange sense of irritation stirred within him. Still, he said, “Grandfather wants us to take Miles back to the Old Estate. You’re coming too.”

Clara was taken aback. She thought James Carter had summoned them only because of Ryan, not expecting her to be included.

“Okay.”

The three of them headed downstairs together and got into the car for the Carter Estate.

The ride was silent, the atmosphere in the car thick with tension.

The black Bentley pulled up in front of the Old Estate, and as Clara stepped out, a small figure darted towards her, kicking at her. “Mom! Why would you leak national secrets? Do you even know that everyone’s saying my mom’s a bad person!”

Clara didn’t miss the anger and disgust in Lucas’s eyes, and the words still stung her already numb heart.

This was her son, showing no concern for what she’d been through, but instead, believing rumors and glaring at her with animosity. Ethan frowned and reached out to pull Lucas back, but the boy shook him off.”Dad, don’t stop me! She’s a bad person!” Just then, the gates of the Old Estate creaked open, and James Carter emerged, leaning on a cane, his face pale with illness. He glanced at the wailing Lucas, his voice deepening.”Luke, you are not to speak to your mother like that!” Lucas, startled by his grandfather’s sternness, paused in his crying, but still grumbled stubbornly, “But Grandma said…”

“Don’t listen to your grandmother’s nonsense!”

James cut him off, glaring at Margaret beside him.”Is this how you’re raising the child?”

Margaret quickly stepped forward, pulled Lucas away, and led him off to the side.

James sighed heavily, his gaze settling on Clara. After a long, hesitant pause, he finally spoke.

“Come inside with me, both of you.”
