Clara watched James’s hunched back as he walked, the sound of his cane against the bluestone floor muffled and heavy, like a weight on her

heart.

It had been a long time since she’d seen James, and she hadn’t expected him to age so much in just a few days.

No wonder Ethan was so desperate to get Ryan back.

She composed herself, following James into the living room, expecting a lecture about the National Security Agency investigation.

Instead, James said, “Clara, I know about the NSA situation. It’s not your fault, so don’t take it to heart.”

He gave Clara a reassuring smile, then turned to Ethan and Ryan.”You two, come with me to the study.”

Clara was left alone in the enormous living room. She sat down on the sofa, and a servant brought her fruit and tea. Clara hadn’t eaten much for dinner, and she was feeling a bit peckish now, so she picked at the snacks.

Suddenly, she heard a cold snort.

Margaret had finally managed to lull a fussy Lucas to sleep. She walked in and saw Clara sitting sideways on the sofa. Remembering that the old man had embarrassed her in front of that bastard because of Clara, resentment began to bubble up inside her.

“After all these years, you still have no manners. No wonder the National Security Agency took you in for questioning.”

“Do you have any idea how close you came to ruining the entire Carter Group because of this?”

“It’s a good thing the outside world doesn’t know about your relationship with Eth, or who knows how this would have ended. No wonder Luke doesn’t like you.”

Clara looked up, her eyes filled with mockery.”Isn’t it because you taught him not to like me?”

“Besides, you’re the one who taught me my manners. If my manners are bad, shouldn’t you be questioning your own methods?”

“You!”

Margaret’s face froze. She hadn’t expected the usually docile Clara to retaliate so sharply. Exasperated, she spat, “You really can tell you came from a poor family.”

“If it weren’t for you being pregnant with Lucas, you wouldn’t have been worthy of marrying into the Carter family! And now you dare to talk back to me!”

“Worthy or not, I still married in,” Clara retorted.

Clara didn’t even glance at Margaret, she had endured her for too many years in the Carter family. She had been so focused on being a good Mrs. Carter, on gaining the approval of Margaret and everyone else in the Carter family.

But after all these years, Margaret’s attitude towards her hadn’t improved, but had instead worsened. Even Lucas, under her guidance, showed her no respect whatsoever.

At this moment, she didn’t want to endure it anymore.

“If you’re not satisfied, then you should advise your son to divorce me.”

That would save her a lot of trouble.

Margaret’s chest heaved with anger. Just as she was about to explode, an aged voice sounded, “Do you have any semblance of being a mother-in-law!”

“Dad, it’s clearly Clara’s attitude…”

Margaret was taken aback, turning around to see Ryan and Ethan supporting James, as they walked in. Clearly, the three of them had reached some kind of agreement, their previous estrangement gone.

She wanted to say something more, but then she heard James say, “Instead of hoping for your son’s family to be harmonious, all you know how to do is criticize your daughter-in-law.”

“Clara has been married into the Carter family for years and has endured your torment. What kind of attitude do you expect from her?” Clara’s heart tightened. She wondered if they had overheard her telling Margaret to persuade Ethan to divorce her. Clearly, Ethan had heard. His gaze swept over Clara, a faint curve gracing his lips, seemingly unbothered by her words. Instead, he seemed intrigued by Clara’s newfound vibrancy and edge.

After scolding Margaret, James Carter coughed twice.”It’s rare for you to come back. Why not stay the night?”

Ryan Walker’s voice was indifferent.”No, I can’t. I’m worried about Lila being home alone. I should

Clara glanced upstairs. The only suite here was the one she shared with Ethan. Staying would mean not only sleeping in the same but also facing Margaret’s relentless harassment.

“Grandpa, I have things to do tomorrow, so I won’t stay and keep you company. I’ll visit you again when I’m done.”

James Carter didn’t press them, sighing softly, knowing that both his grandchildren had distanced themselves from him.

“Alright, do as you please.”

Ethan Carter picked up his jacket from the sofa, draping it over his arm.”Let’s

The ride back was even quieter than before.

I’ll take you home.”

God only knew what those two had been talking about with James Carter, but Clara felt suffocated by the atmosphere in the car.

When they arrived at the parking lot of her complex, Ryan glanced at the two of them and left first.

Clara watched Ryan’s retreating figure, sighed, and felt like fate was playing a cruel joke. She never expected that he would be the Carter family’s illegitimate son, and she certainly never expected that the model husband Margaret Carter always talked about would cheat.

Not wanting to dwell on the past of the older generation any longer, Clara turned to head towards the elevators, but was stopped by Ethan, “Clara, is there anything you want to say to me?”

Clara turned back, puzzled, “What do you want me to say?”

Ethan’s eyes rested on her face, filled with sorrow, “You saw James’s health situation. The doctor said he doesn’t have much time left.”

“Finding Miles was one thing he really wanted, and now all that’s left is for him to see us doing well.”

“You were recently suspended by Nova AI, and you don’t have much to do anyway. Why don’t you move back in? Once you’re better, we can have another child, which would fulfill James’s wish.”

Clara scoffed, “Have another child? How? Through IVF?”

Have another child?

Did he still want to treat her like a breeding machine?

“We don’t have to.”

Ethan recalled a time early in their marriage when he’d been drunk and tried to initiate sex, only to be met with Clara’s hysterical resistance. She’d even slapped him. When he’d sobered up, he’d clearly seen the terror in her eyes.

“If you’re not willing to try naturally, we can do IVF.”

Clara let out a short, mirthless laugh, wiping away a tear from the corner of her eye as her face hardened.

“I won’t do IVF.”

“Ethan, you have Luke to inherit the family business. If you want more kids, go have them with someone else.”

At that, Ethan’s brow furrowed, a hint of displeasure entering his voice.”Clara, I thought I’d been more than fair to you lately. I got you everything you wanted. What more could you possibly want?”

Clara turned away, her back conveying a sense of finality.”I’m perfectly content.”

He had indeed helped her get the necklace, but he’d turned a blind eye to the revenge against Mason, focused only on vouching for Natalie and forcing Nova Al to partner with Apex.

She wouldn’t give him another chance, another opportunity to hurt her.

Just move back in,” Ethan called after her, “I’ll go public with our relationship. You won’t have to worry about being investigated by the National Security Agency again.”

Clara didn’t break her stride, swallowing the bitter lump in her throat as she stepped into the elevator.

Even without Ethan, she wouldn’t let that kind of thing happen again.

Ethan stood there, watching the elevator doors slide shut, his knuckles clenching white.

He was genuinely trying to mend things between them, but Clara seemed determined to push him away at every turn.

The anger in his chest grew hotter and hotter. He kicked a small stone at his feet, sending it skittering across the ground with a grating sound. Finally, he tugged at his tie, turned, and yanked open the car door. The engine of the black Bentley roared to life, as if mirroring its owner’s frustration, and it sped off into the night.

The next day dawned with rare beautiful weather, not too hot.

Clara woke up, had breakfast, and thought about Mia. They’d had to cut their time together short yesterday because she’d gone to the stables. She decided to text Mia and see if she was free to hang out.

But before she could decide where they should go, Mia called.

“Clara, something’s happened! You need to check the trending topics right now!”
