Want My Womb? I'll Make You Childless novel Chapter 83

Chapter 83

E

Ethan’s eyes were fixed on the good luck charm Clara had so casually given away.

A wave of unspeakable rage and disappointment washed over him.

Ethan had always thought that even with their issues, Clara still cared about his feelings. But now, it seemed his heartfelt sincerity was meaningless to her.

What about the old man’s sincerity towards her? Did she also consider that dispensable?

Was that why she’d targeted the old man after finding out he’d left her shares in his will?

Or maybe, she hadn’t known about the shares at all. Maybe she just thought that if the old man died, she could finally escape the Carter family and him, since he wouldn’t agree to her divorcing him?

Ethan’s mind flashed back to the fleeting look of relief on Clara’s face when the old man was being rushed into the ICU, and he became even more convinced of his suspicions.

He clenched his fists tightly, his knuckles turning white, the warmth in his eyes completely gone, replaced only by an icy chill.

So, the old man hadn’t been able to talk Clara out of it at all. She’d been plotting to divorce him all along, to get rid of him and the Carter family!

Ha, she could dream on!

Natalie subtly caught Ethan’s change in mood and a barely noticeable smile crept onto her face, knowing that he was angry. Although she didn’t know why he was angry, all she needed to do now was add a little fuel to the fire.

With that in mind, she put on a worried expression, squatted down, and asked Lila, “How long did Auntie stay with you? Are you sure she didn’t leave your room at all?”

I’m not sure,” Lila Walker said, tilting her head, “I fell asleep, but Aunt Clara was there when I woke up.

“Later, Aunt Clara said she was worried about Great-Grandpa, so I told her to go upstairs and check on him and come back down to tell me how he was doing!”

“You hear that! You hear that!”

Margaret Carter immediately seized on this, pointing at Clara Bennett and shouting, “That’s it, then!”

“You must have cut off the oxygen tube first, then pretended to go downstairs, woke Lila up to give you an alibi, and then came back upstairs to see how Great-Grandpa was doing, just to make sure he was dead!”

“Clara, how could you be so vicious!”

Clara Bennett felt a chill run through her as she listened to these accusations. She turned to Ethan Carter, “Is that what you think too? Do you think I did it?”

Ethan Carter didn’t answer. He just stared at her, his eyes filled with undisguised disappointment and rage.”

Even though he said nothing, did it even matter at this point?

Ethan’s silence spoke volumes.

Natalie Parker stood aside, watching the scene unfold with a quiet smile in her heart.

All she’d wanted was for James Carter to die, for Clara to lose her footing in the Carter family. She hadn’t expected things to go so smoothly, that she could pin the blame entirely on Clara.

Once Clara was convicted, Ethan would never forgive her.

Then, she could naturally return to Ethan’s side and, through him, obtain Blade’s core data.

But the next moment, the ICU door swung open, and a doctor walked out with a grave expression. Removing his mask, he shook his head at the group.”The patient’s condition is very poor. All vital signs are declining. I’m afraid… he doesn’t have much time left.”

Everyone’s heart sank. Margaret nearly collapsed, her legs giving way.

The doctor paused, then added, “Given the Carter family’s unique status and the fact that Carter Group is a well-known corporation, Assistant Evans just mentioned that the senior Mr. Carter hasn’t made a will yet, and the company is already in chaos. Assistant Evans hopes to buy the senior Mr. Carter at least enough time to make a will.”

“I remember there’s a special medication used in the military that might temporarily restore the patient’s consciousness, buying some time,” the

doctor said.

“Given the senior Mr. Carter’s advanced condition, this medication certainly won’t extend his life, but it can buy ten or fifteen minutes, enough time to make a will.”

The smile froze on Natalie’s face.

A miracle drug?

She couldn’t let the Carter family get their hands on it!

After all, James saw her face!

If he woke up and told them he saw her, she’d be done for!

Clara’s

when she heard the doctor’s words.

If they could get the drug and wake James up, they could find out who was behind this!

“Doctor, where can we get this drug?”

The doctor nodded, his tone serious.”This drug is a newly developed wartime emergency medication used to stabilize vital signs after critical trauma. It can briefly activate the central nervous system to create a window for treatment.”

“But it’s military-controlled material. Only units at the division level or higher can apply for it, and there must be a clear medical indication.” “If you can get this drug, please do so as soon as possible. James won’t last much longer.”

“Military-controlled material?”

A glimmer of hope appeared in Margaret’s eyes. She pulled out her phone, found a number, and dialed it.

She was a daughter of the Evans family, and her elder brother, Marcus Evans, was a commander in the military. Even if her brother had been somewhat displeased with her in recent years, asking him to help get the medicine to save the old man shouldn’t be a problem.

As long as she could get the old man to wake up, he could testify against Clara Bennett, send her to jail, and make Ethan Carter divorce her!

“The number you have dialed is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”

But the mechanical female voice from the receiver caused her face to darken bit by bit.

After dialing three times with the same result, Margaret Carter slammed her phone onto the hallway bench, her face full of resentment.

She couldn’t get through! Her brother’s phone was unreachable!

Almost the instant the doctor finished speaking about the military, Clara Bennett thought of someone.

Ryan Walker!

Ryan Walker was in the military. Maybe Ryan Walker had connections in that area.

But Ryan Walker had already returned to the military, and all communication devices were shielded for security. She couldn’t contact him at all

now.

Just as Clara Bennett was pondering what to do, Margaret Carter remained relentless.

“Who are you putting on this act for?”

“Who doesn’t know that the military has strict rules? When there’s a mission, no one can be contacted!”

If even she couldn’t reach Marcus, what chance did Clara, a girl with no connections, have?

“Aren’t you just trying to distance yourself from any involvement in the old man’s death?!”

“But the evidence is overwhelming, what else do you have to say for yourself?!”

“Margaret!”

Faced with Margaret’s repeated and baseless accusations, Clara’s patience had finally snapped.”I’ll say it one more time, if you want to accuse me, wait until the police investigate!”

Margaret had never been yelled at like that by Clara before. She raised her hand to slap Clara across the face,”Clara Bennett, I’m your mother-in-law, how dare you call me by my first name!”

Clara dodged the blow, reaching out to grab Margaret’s wrist. “I’m warning you, don’t you dare lay a hand on me!”

“That hurts! Clara, are you trying to rebel?!”

Margaret cried out in pain, struggling as she looked at Ethan.”Eth! Look at her! She dares to attack me!”

“Enough!”

Ethan stepped forward and grabbed Clara’s arm before she could react.”Clara, this isn’t the place for your “My outbursts?”

outbursts.”

Clara tried to twist her arm, but couldn’t break free from his grip.”Ethan, she was the one who started it, didn’t you see?”

Ethan’s gaze was as cold as Clara remembered from years ago, that of a detached and selfish man.”She’s my mother. You don’t get to talk to her like that, no matter what.”

Clara found it all incredibly ironic.

Margaret had hurled baseless accusations at her, trying to pin the blame for Mr. Carter’s death on her, pushing her, and repeatedly attempting to strike her, yet Ethan had remained unmoved.

But the moment she dodged Margaret’s slap and grabbed her wrist, he stepped in to defend her.

Talk about a devoted son!

Ethan was stung by the coldness in Clara’s eyes, but the thought of the good luck charm made him sneer inwardly.

If Clara was going to treat his feelings like a joke, why should he bother being nice to her?

They were stuck in this mess together, and he’d be damned if he’d let her off easy.

“Let go!”

He tightened his grip, and Clara, wincing in pain, released Margaret’s hand.

The moment Margaret’s hand was free, before Clara could react, she swung and landed a stinging slap across Clara’s face. Half of Clara’s face instantly flushed red, and her eyes turned glacial.

Still not satisfied, Margaret moved to shove her again.

“You venomous bitch! You harmed my father-in-law and won’t even admit it. Let me tell you, even if we get the medicine and save him today, I won’t let you off, and the Carter family will never accept you!”

“Disrespectful and disobedient, talking back to your mother-in-law, you’ve committed two of the seven grounds for divorce for women! I’ll make sure Ethan divorces you!”

“The Carter family was blind to marry you. You’re nothing but a jinx. You think you can wait for my This time, however, Clara didn’t give Margaret the chance to hurt her.

She slapped Margaret back across the face and shoved her backward with all her strength.

“That slap is for the one you gave me earlier.”

the shares? Dream on!”

“Let me tell you, Margaret, I’m definitely getting this divorce, and I won’t let you have a single share…”

“Clara, shut your mouth!”

Ethan’s icy roar cut off the pointless argument.

He stepped forward to help the sobbing Margaret up, glaring coldly at Clara across from him, and said, each word distinct,”Clara, divorce? You’re dreaming if you think that’s going to happen.”

“You’re a Carter, born and bred, and you’ll be a Carter even in death.”

“As for the shares, don’t even think about it. Harming Grandpa, scheming for shares-do you think I’d let you get away with that so easily?”

Clara covered her cheek, still stinging from Margaret’s slap, and felt only irony in her heart.

Remembering the surrogacy evidence Ethan had used against her, which Attorney Brown had secured, Clara smirked, looking directly at Ethan as she said, carefully enunciating each word,

“The divorce will be settled in court.”

“Ethan Carter, not only will I divorce you and get the shares my grandfather left me,”

“I’ll also make sure you lose everything.”

Clara had never wanted to push things to the extreme. Even with the surrogacy evidence in her hands, she could have sent Ethan to jail and seized all of his assets.

But considering Ethan was Lucas’s father-her own flesh and blood-and knowing Ethan had to take care of Lucas, she always felt she had to leave him a way out.

She’d envisioned getting sixty percent of Ethan’s assets, a peaceful divorce, and then going their separate ways.

But looking at the scene today, did she still need to consider Ethan and Lucas? Did she owe either of them any consideration at all?

Hearing his parents arguing in front of him, Lucas felt a pang of panic and quickly tugged at Clara’s sleeve, his voice pleading.

“Mommy, you hurt Great-Grandpa and pushed Grandma, and made Daddy angry. Why don’t you just apologize to Daddy?” Lucas pleaded, his little voice laced with anxiety.

Clara coldly shook off Lucas’s grip, not even sparing him a glance.

Ever since she’d overheard Lucas’s absurd accusations, her disappointment in her son had reached its peak.

Hearing Clara’s unwavering determination to divorce, Ethan chuckled, a confident, almost cocky glint in his eyes. He arched an eyebrow at Clara. “You’re welcome to try.”

In Chicago, no one dared to cross the Carter family.

Clara would never escape him.

They would torment each other until they were old and gray, and maybe that was okay. Whose marriage wasn’t filled with fights and disagreements?

Clara didn’t reply. She just gave Ethan one last look, then grabbed her purse.

She’d used quite a bit of force when she pushed Margaret, and she’d twisted her ankle. Turning, she limped away from the chaotic scene at the hospital.

Ethan watched Clara hobble away, her thin frame looking as fragile as a butterfly’s wing.

He forced himself to look away, a flicker of reluctance tugging at his heart.

Clara was so sure she could divorce him and take his money.

Could it be…

Could it be that Clara knew about her surrogacy for him?!

Other than that, he couldn’t think of any reason why Clara would be so certain about a divorce.

Meanwhile, after leaving the hospital, Clara returned to Nova AI. After contacting Attorney Brown to request a speedy court hearing, she threw herself back into her work without

any distractions.

She didn’t dwell on the hospital or the special medicine at all.

She had panicked at the hospital, even thinking of contacting her connections in the military to get special medicine for her grandfather, hoping to bring him back to consciousness to prove her innocence.

But now, thinking about it, there was no need.

If the Carter family believed she was a murderer, they could simply call the police to arrest her. She didn’t believe the police wouldn’t give her a chance to prove her innocence.

She shouldn’t fall into the trap of self-incrimination.

Why go through the trouble of waking the old man up? He was already old and had been tortured by the hospital for so long. Why put him through more suffering?

Although Clara thought this way, Benjamin Hayes, who had been observing her from the doorway, quietly lowered his head and left. The Carter family’s scandal had caused quite a stir. Being in the same social circle, news spread quickly.

He’d made some discreet inquiries and learned that Clara Bennett was currently under suspicion by the Carter family for murder. The only way to prove her innocence was to have the old man wake up and identify the real killer.

And the only way to wake the old man was with a special medication from the military.

But how easy was it to get your hands on military-grade pharmaceuticals?

Remembering Ryan Walker’s instructions to look after Clara before he left, Benjamin thought for a moment.

After a moment’s consideration, Benjamin decided to send Ryan Walker a message through his contacts.

Clara’s in trouble. Time for you to step up.
