Chapter 84
Ryan Walker was in the middle of a strategy meeting at the training camp when he saw the message from Benjamin. He got up, walked out of the tent, and used a secure communicator to call him back,
“What happened to Clara?”
Ryan’s voice was low and gravelly.
Unless it was urgent, Benjamin would never contact him during a mission.
Benjamin gave him a concise rundown of everything he knew.
“My guess is, the Carters are blaming her for what happened to the old man. I’m afraid the only way she can clear her name is by getting that
medication.”
Ryan Walker’s face darkened.
Ethan Carter really had some nerve, deliberately getting him transferred to the unit. He’d actually thought Ethan had changed, that he wanted to treat Clara well while he was gone and rebuild a positive relationship with her.
But who knew Ethan would target Clara like this?
Sometimes he just wanted to crack Ethan’s skull open and see what the hell was inside.
Ryan glanced at the army medic sitting not far away.”Got it. I’ll handle this.”
“I’ll get back as soon as I can.”
He hung up and turned back into the tent, giving Commander Evans, who was chairing the meeting, a crisp salute.
“Sir, requesting urgent leave for a personal matter. My grandfather is in critical condition and needs immediate medical attention. Requesting permission to take a medic and medication to the hospital!”
Commander Evans paused, then remembered that Ryan had recently been recognized by the Carter family. Wasn’t his grandfather the old Mr. Carter?
Considering the Carter family’s contributions to the country over the years, and the fact that the Blade project also involved the Carter family, not to mention the Evans and Carter families were related by marriage, they had to help no matter what.
After a moment of consideration, he nodded. “Alright, I’ll coordinate the deployment process. Take a medical team with you and get soon as possible. The mission can’t be delayed.”
“Yes, sir! Thank you, sir!”

A glint of determination sparked in Ryan Walker’s eyes. He snapped off a salute and strode purposefully toward the helipad outside the encampment.
Walker Venture Partners. An office.
Mason Walker accepted the file from his assistant, flipping through the pages. The pressure around him intensified with each page he turned. When he saw the death certificate of the man who drugged Clara Bennett years ago, along with photos of the car accident scene, he slammed the file away.
“So the Anderson family set Clara up to marry Ethan Carter!”
“Robert Anderson! Emma Anderson! You’re really something!”
Mason slammed his hand on the desk, making the assistant standing nearby flinch backward.
He had been working for Mason for years and had never seen his boss this furious.
“The Anderson family is just bullying Clara because she has no one to protect her?!”
“They weren’t content with earning a fortune off her all these years, they even stirred up trouble between us!”
Mason rose and began to pace slowly.
The thought of Clara’s situation in the Carter family all these years, the thought of how he had resented her for so long, the things he did to her when he first returned home, made him want to tear the Anderson family apart!
He hated himself even more for his poor judgment back then.
“Investigate Emma Anderson, find out how many dirty things she’s done in the name of Walker Venture Partners over the years.”
He turned to his assistant, his voice low and menacing.”Also, dig up all the evidence of Robert Anderson’s scheme to short Anderson Industries. I want them to understand the true meaning of reaping what you sow!”

The assistant nodded, then hesitated, recalling the news he’d just received “Sir, I just got word that Mr. Carter has had an incident. The Carters seem to be blaming Ms. Bennett,”
Mason stopped pacing. After hearing the full account from his assistant, a sharp pain shot through him as he imagined Clara’s current
situation.
“Get the lawyers. We’re going there.”
Outside the office, Emma Anderson overheard the commotion inside, her face draining of color.
She had received news from the Carters and assumed Clara was too preoccupied with their issues to focus on anything else. Emma had planned to discuss with Mason how to seize Nova Al’s market share.
Instead, she’d overheard this. Mason had been secretly investigating Clara’s affairs all along, and had even discovered that Robert had been the one who administered the drug!
Now, he was even willing to work with the board to sideline her, all for Clara’s sake!
What about all her years of effort?
How could he be so heartless? She was carrying his child!
Emma staggered backward, understanding Mason all too well.
Betrayal and deceit were the two things Mason Walker hated most in this world. It was the reason he’d held onto his resentment toward Clara Bennett for so many years.
Now that he knew the truth, he’d never let her, or the Anderson family, get away with it.
No, she couldn’t just sit here and wait for it to happen. She had to find a way to distract Mason, buy herself some time to prepare.
When she saw Mason heading out, his assistant having already contacted a lawyer, Patricia quickly turned and hurried back to her own office.
Clutching her stomach, Patricia paced back and forth, a knot of anxiety tightening in her chest.
Maybe she could find a way to make the Carter family believe Clara was guilty of harming James Carter. That would set Mason against them!
Not only would that buy her time, but she could also use the opportunity to destroy Clara, frame her for murder!
A cruel glint sparkled in her eyes at the thought. She snatched up her phone and dialed Natalie Parker’s number.
She remembered Patricia Anderson mentioning that she’d given Natalie a copy of James Carter’s caregiver schedule.
With what happened to James Carter, Natalie was definitely involved. Getting Clara sent to prison would be a win-win for Natalie, so she’d definitely help her!
“Hello? Who is this?”
The call connected, and Natalie Parker sounded like she was in a good mood.
“Hello, Miss Parker, this is Emma Anderson, Clara Bennett’s cousin. I’m sure you’ve heard of me before.”
Of course Natalie had heard of Emma Anderson – the cousin who went abroad and came back to get engaged to Clara’s first love.
She glanced at Margaret Carter beside her, subtly got up, and walked further away.
“Miss Anderson, what can I do for you?”
Only after ensuring Margaret couldn’t hear, did Natalie speak again.
“Miss Parker, I heard about what happened to James Carter. The Carter family suspects Clara. Do you think you could find a way to make sure the blame sticks to Clara?”
Hearing Emma speak so bluntly, Natalie was taken aback, then chuckled, “Miss Anderson, you must be mistaken. I have no say in the Carter family’s affairs.”
Hearing Natalie’s refusal, Emma scoffed, “Miss Parker seems to have forgotten, my mother gave you a copy of James Carter’s caregiver schedule before.”
“Tell me, if the Carter family found out about this, would they continue to suspect Clara, or would their suspicion turn to you?”
Natalie’s expression changed for a moment upon hearing Emma’s words.
“What do you want? Aren’t you afraid that if this gets out, your family won’t come out of it unscathed?”
“Not afraid.”
Emma Anderson’s reply was immediate, without a moment’s hesitation. She was in a position where she had nothing to lose.
The Anderson family would never be able to withstand Mason Walker’s retaliation. They were doomed anyway, so adding the Carter family to their list of enemies wouldn’t make much of a difference.

Only by ensuring that Clara Bennett was convicted could the Anderson family possibly survive.
“Ms. Parker, if you find a way to make this happen, it’ll be beneficial for all of us.”
“Otherwise, I’ll reveal that you were the one who got the nurse scheduling list. Don’t think you’ll come out of this unscathed!”
Natalie Parker gripped her phone tightly. She couldn’t allow that to happen. If the truth came out, she would definitely lose Ethan Carter’s trust, and all hope of obtaining Blade’s core data would be lost!
She pondered for a moment, then took a deep breath.”Okay, I understand. I’ll find a way.”
After hanging up, Natalie composed herself, walked to the ICU waiting area, and sat down next to Margaret Carter.
“Sigh, you’re still the best. If you hadn’t gone abroad back then, Ethan would have married you.”
Margaret Carter sighed, rubbing her cheek where Clara had slapped her.
Natalie Parker began massaging her shoulders, speaking softly, “Ethan and I weren’t meant to be. Please, calm down. Clara is still a Carter family member. Blowing this up would be bad for everyone.”
“Who out there even knows she’s Ethan’s wife?”
That set Margaret off, her eyes blazing with anger.”A viper like her, harming your father, trying to harm Ethan, and now she dares to lay a hand on me? I won’t let her get away with this!”
Natalie’s lips curved slightly.”So, what are you planning to do? You can’t actually call the cops on her, can you?”
“Why can’t I?”
Natalie’s question seemed to spark an idea in Margaret’s mind.”I’m going to get Ethan to call the police, to have her arrested, to put her in jail…”
She didn’t get to finish her sentence before Ethan, who had just walked in, interrupted her loudly.
“Jail? Who are you trying to put in jail?”
Ethan’s gaze swept coldly over Margaret and Natalie, who stood to the side, making it impossible to gauge his mood.
“Mom, the weather’s been great lately. I’ll arrange for a private plane to take you to South Alaska Island for a vacation.”
It was clear he was trying to protect Clara, not wanting to see her imprisoned. Margaret could handle being scolded, but she couldn’t forget Clara had just slapped her. Her face still stung.
“Ethan Carter, how can you be so blind? Still protecting Clara after all this? No wonder she dared to hit me!”
“And you haven’t exactly kept your hands to yourself either.”
Ethan wasn’t blind; he hadn’t forgotten that Margaret had thrown the first punch.
The thought of Clara staggering away made him frown. A weight pressed on his chest, making it hard to breathe.
“You’re actually yelling at me for her?”
Margaret felt a surge of indignation.”I’m your own mother! And you’re shouting at me for some woman you’re about to divorce?” Ethan was beyond exasperated. He gave the two women in the room one last look.”I won’t allow either of you to interfere in this.” “And if I catch either of you trying to pull something behind my back, you’ll regret it.”
With that, he turned and strode out of the room, heading to the window at the end of the hall, where he lit a cigarette.
“Eth.”
Natalie followed him, her voice gentle.”Your mom is just worried about your grandfather. You shouldn’t talk to her like that.” Ethan merely glanced at her, his expression cold, and said nothing.
Natalie continued, “I believe Ms. Bennett wouldn’t hurt your grandfather, but your mom’s concerns just won’t go away.”
“Maybe you should call the police and let them investigate. That way, Ms. Bennett’s name will be cleared, and it’ll prevent any further trouble.” Ethan replayed Clara’s parting words, “I’m set on this divorce,” in his mind. Through the swirling smoke, his eyes grew increasingly complex.
“What’s between her and me is none of your concern.”
“I’ll handle it myself:”
“Go back inside, Natalie.”
Natalie had intended to say more, but Ethan cut her off, his tone icy and laced with the unyielding pressure of a man used to command, each
word distinct.
“I said, go back inside.”

Natalie’s heart clenched. Ethan had never spoken to her like that before. Tears welled up in her eyes, but as she looked up, she met Ethan’s gaze. so cold it was almost frigid.
She paused, ultimately not daring to say another word, and left with hesitant glances back.
Ethan continued to smoke, his expression inscrutable, making it impossible to guess what he was truly thinking.
He admitted it he did hate Clara.
He hated her ruthlessness, hated how she protected Ryan Walker and his daughter without considering his feelings.
But he loved Clara more than anyone else. He would absolutely not get divorced from her.
With that thought, Ethan stubbed out his cigarette and waved his assistant over.
“Go to the police and identify Mrs. Bennett as a suspect in the murder of my grandfather. Contact the authorities to apprehend her.” “But before you file the report, have the lawyers draw up a statement declaring that we will not divorce. Then, go talk to Mrs. Bennett.”
report
“If she agrees to remain married, she will still be entitled to inherit from my grandfather’s estate. In that case, we will drop the and withdraw the request for her arrest.”
“However, if Mrs. Bennett insists on a divorce, immediately have the police arrest and charge her. She will be the prime suspect in my grandfather’s murder.”
“Also, tell Mrs. Bennett she won’t get a single cent of my grandfather’s inheritance.”
Ethan stubbed out his cigarette.
His polished leather shoes ground the glowing ember against the marble floor, extinguishing it bit by bit.
He lowered his head, watching the light disappear beneath his feet.
When he spoke of using the shares and the police to threaten Clara, it was as if he were talking about crushing an ant-a chilling display of
power.
Go and have a good talk with Mrs. Bennett.
Clara is a smart woman. I believe she will make the smart choice.
Even the assistant felt uneasy. Wasn’t this just pushing Mrs. Bennett further away?”Mr. Carter, but this…”
Ethan lifted his head, a slight lift to his brow.”What are you waiting for? Get going.”
“Or are you finding this job too much for you? Do you need someone to replace you?”
Seeing that Mr. Carter was using his job as leverage, the assistant didn’t dare say another word. He nodded repeatedly, using his phone to contact the police while also reaching out to a lawyer to find Clara.
That afternoon, Nova Al’s research and development department.
Clara pushed open the door of the R&D lab and stepped out.
Her fingertips were still dusted with the silver-gray powder from the microchips she’d been calibrating, and the high-intensity work had left. a faint blue tinge beneath her eyes.
As she reached the corner of the hallway, she saw Benjamin blocking a man in a suit, arguing with him in low voices.
Spotting Clara, the man’s eyes lit up. He bypassed Benjamin and quickly walked up to her, offering a gold-embossed business card.
“Mrs. Carter, I’m Ethan Jefferson, head of the Carter Group’s legal department.”
you
read it carefully.”
He handed her a document.”Mr. Carter asked me to give this to you and asked that
Clara took the file, unfolded it, and after only skimming two lines, she couldn’t help but laugh at its contents.
Ethan actually wanted her to give up the divorce, or he’d strip her of her inheritance and even have her thrown in jail. “Ethan sure knows how to drive a bargain.”
She slapped the agreement against Ethan Jefferson’s chest, her voice dripping with sarcasm, and turned to leave.
Ethan Jefferson stepped forward, blocking her path with his arm.
“Think carefully, Mrs. Carter.”
He glanced at his watch, a subtle threat underlying his tone.”The police are already on their way. If you sign now, you can leave with some dignity.”
“If you don’t, you’ll be leaving in a police car, and Nova Al’s stock price will likely suffer.”

“This is also Mr. Carter’s intention…”
Clara stopped in her tracks, turning to face him.”Are you threatening me?”
“I never harmed Grandpa. What grounds do the police have to arrest me?”
She pulled out her phone, her fingers flying across the screen. Right in front of the lawyer, she dialed Ethan’s number.
“I want to ask Ethan myself if he’s not afraid of me destroying both of us.”
