Chapter 85
Outside the ICU ward.
Lucas sat alone, stunned, on the bench outside the ward.
In the distance, his dad was talking to the doctor, while his grandma held Aunt Su’s hand, sitting beside him. “You always have a plan. Once Ethan gets the police to arrest Clara, let’s see how arrogant she can be then!” Lucas blinked, silently analyzing the current situation.
After all the previous conflict, he could sense that his mom and dad’s feelings for each other were long gone.
Now, the person by his dad’s side was Aunt Su.
It seemed Aunt Su carried a lot of weight in his dad’s heart.
Considering that Grandma was determined to make his dad and mom divorce, and Mom’s attitude was just as firm, they probably would get divorced for sure.
If they really divorced, then this aunt in front of him would likely become his new mom…
If his mom and dad really divorced, he would definitely have to stay in the Carter family. In that case, couldn’t afford to offend his dad, and he couldn’t neglect Aunt Su either.
Just as Lucas was battling his own thoughts,
his dad would be his only support. He
he caught a glimpse of his dad’s phone, which had been unintentionally left aside. The screen was flashing, even though it was on silent, indicating an incoming call.
Lucas glanced down and saw that it was his mom calling.
After hesitating for a long while, Lucas quietly swiped his dad’s phone and slipped away to a corner, where he rejected the call.
He then stealthily deleted the call history and added his mother’s number to the blacklist.
Since Mom and Dad can’t be together anymore, Dad doesn’t need to answer Mom’s calls in front of the aunt, to avoid making her unhappy.
Ethan, having finished his conversation with the doctor, turned around to see Lucas fiddling with his phone in the corner, and his brow furrowed.
He strode over to Lucas, snatched the phone from his hand, and shot him a sharp look.
Did I give you permission to touch my phone? Messing with other people’s things without their consent can have consequences.
Lucas’s eyes darted around, and he shrank back, startled.”O-okay,” he stammered.
Ethan glared at him, then checked the call history, finding no calls from Clara. He smirked.

He refused to believe that Clara wouldn’t call him after the lawyer had spoken to her.
Of course, he knew that the conditions he had proposed were excessive and harsh, but he didn’t care. He wanted Clara to bow her head and apologize to him.
As long as Clara didn’t divorce him, he would agree to anything she wanted.
Now, all he had to do was wait.
Meanwhile, in the corridor of Nova AI.
Clara frowned when the call was disconnected. She dialed again, only to hear a message saying, “The number you have dialed is currently switched off.
Ethan had obviously blocked her number.
A flicker of disbelief crossed Clara’s eyes.
“Mrs. Bennett, you’re wasting your time.”
Ethan Jefferson’s voice cut through the air again, laced with a chilling certainty.”Since Mr. Carter sent me here, he has no intention of giving you room to negotiate. The agreement will you sign it, or won’t you?”
Clara glared at him, and in a swift motion, snatched the non- -divorce agreement from the table. She ripped it in half, then tore it again and again, scattering the pieces into the air.
“I won’t sign it. Don’t think you can threaten me like this.”
“Go back and tell Ethan Carter that there’s no possibility of anything between us, ever again!”

“Mrs. Bennett… you’re just making things harder on yourself.”
Ethan Jefferson’s face darkened. He pulled out his phone and made a call.
A moment later, a flurry of hurried footsteps echoed from the entrance of the hallway.
Several uniformed police officers strode into the room. The officer in charge flashed his badge.
A
“Clara Bennett, we’ve received a report suspecting your involvement in the death of James Carter at the hospital. We need you to come to the Police Station with us to assist in the investigation.”
Clara didn’t resist. She simply straightened her collar, meeting the officer’s gaze with a calm expression.
“I’ll go with you. I’ll cooperate with the investigation.”
“But I didn’t harm James Carter. If you intend to convict me, please present your evidence.”
“Also, I need to contact my lawyer and have them present during any questioning.”
The officer nodded.”Rest assured, Ms. Bennett, we won’t falsely accuse an innocent person, but we won’t let a guilty one
This was the second time Clara had been escorted away by the police from Nova AI.
Ignoring the stares-some curious, some shocked, some gossiping-she calmly followed the officers out of Nova AI. But just as she was about to get into the police car, a black G-Wagon sped up and screeched to a halt at the curb. Mason Walker got out.

free either.”
His eyes locked onto Clara, surrounded by police, and a flash of pain crossed his face. He hurried forward, his own lawyer close behind, and stepped in front of the officers.
“If you want to take her, you’ll have to speak to my lawyer first.”
Mason’s lawyer stepped forward, about to present the documents and negotiate with the police, but Clara avoided his gaze and said softly, “That won’t be necessary.”
“I have my own lawyer. There’s no need for Mr. Walker to trouble himself.”
Clara’s distant “Mr. Walker” stung Mason deeply.
There was a time when Clara would sit on his lap, sweetly calling him Mason.
Now, it was just a cold, formal “Mr. Walker.”
Mason Walker’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he spoke, a hint of urgency in his voice.
“Clara, this isn’t the time to be stubborn. If the Carters dared to call the cops, they’re definitely prepared. You need a professional lawyer present.”
Clara cut him off, her posture ramrod straight.”I said I don’t need it.”
“Besides, I think I made myself clear to Mr. Walker last time.”
“Mr. Walker and I are going our separate ways. From now on, we’re strangers.”
Mason took a deep breath, suppressing the turmoil of emotions, and said in a low voice, “Attorney Brown, who you’ve been trying to reach, went on a business trip to a neighboring city three days ago to handle a cross-border merger. He won’t be back for at least a week.”
His words made Clara pause slightly. It was true that Attorney Brown wouldn’t be back for a while.
“Then I’ll wait for him to return.”
“It’s just assisting with the investigation, not a conviction. I can afford to wait.”
Every word Clara spoke felt like a cut on Mason’s heart, causing a dull ache in his chest.
He looked at Clara’s cool profile, remembering his past indifference, suspicion, and even deliberate sabotage towards her, and regret washed over him like a tide.
His previous actions had ultimately pushed her away.
He wanted to say more, but Clara had already turned away, nodding at the officers.”Let’s go.”
As the police car door slammed shut with a resounding clang, Mason froze, rooted to the spot.
He watched the car slowly pull away until it vanished around the street corner, then slowly clenched his fist, a shadow crossing his eyes.
It was all the fault of the Andersons and Emma Anderson!
If it weren’t for them, Clara wouldn’t be in this mess with him!

Outside the ICU ward at the Hospital.
Ethan Carter ignored the acrid smell of disinfectant, his gaze fixed on his phone screen, his fingers tracing patterns on the glass.
As time ticked by, second by second, a sense of unease grew within him.
Why hadn’t Clara called yet?
Just then, the phone rang, startling him!
Ethan’s eyes lit up. Without even checking the caller ID, he instinctively answered.
“Mr. Carter.”
It was his lawyer, Ethan Jefferson.
“Mr… Carter…”
“Mrs… tore up the agreement. She… she said she’d rather be taken away by the police than sign it…”
“She also said that she and you…”
“Shut up!”
Ethan felt a surge of rage boiling in his chest, but beneath the anger, a flicker of panic he didn’t want to admit even to himself. Nearby, Lucas was cautiously observing his father’s expression, unsure if his earlier decision had been right or wrong.
“Do you think we should arrange bail for Mrs. Carter?”
Ethan Jefferson asked tentatively.
After all, couples fight and make up, and he didn’t want to lose his job over this.
“Leave her be.”
Ethan took a deep breath, suppressing the panic in his heart.
“When she comes to her senses, then we’ll bail her out.”
“Anyway, I don’t believe she murdered Grandpa, and the police won’t do anything to her.”
“It might do her good to clear her head in there. Without the Carter family, she’s nothing.”
Later that evening, the police arrived at the hospital. After showing their badges, they began investigating the matter between Clara and Mr. Carter.
Margaret perked up immediately.”Officers, this involves our family patriarch, so you must investigate thoroughly.”
“The old man’s assistant said that she was the only one who entered his room before the incident.”
She pulled Lucas closer.”And this child here, he’s Clara’s own son.”

“He even saw Clara lurking around Grandpa’s bed. He’s just a little kid; he wouldn’t make something like that up about his own mother, would he?”
The police noted Margaret’s statements, pressed for more details, but she insisted it was Clara who was responsible.
Ethan watched Margaret and the police, his mind racing with what Clara must be going through at the Police Station.
After the police left, Ethan reached for his phone, intending to call Ethan Jefferson again. Instead, he noticed a call block notification in his call history.
A sudden thought struck him. Almost unconsciously, he opened the block list and his face darkened instantly when he saw “Clara Bennett.
He turned to Lucas, held the phone out to him, his voice chilling, “Did you block your mom’s number?”
Lucas froze, his eyes flickered, surprised that his dad had found out.
He bit his lip and whispered, “Yes… I did it.”
“Do you even know what you’ve done?”
Ethan stared intently at Lucas, his gaze trying to bore through him.
“Who told you to block her?!”
The disappointment and anger in his eyes frightened Lucas, and his eyes began to water. “I… I was afraid that if you got a call from Mom, you’d cave and make Grandma unhappy,” Lucas mumbled in his defense.
Ethan snapped, “This is grown-up stuff. It’s not your place to interfere.”

“Why are you yelling at him?”
Margaret quickly pulled Lucas into her arms, “He’s not wrong!”
“Mom!”
Ethan turned to Margaret, his eyes blazing with anger, “Do you have to make things so hard for Clara?!”
Margaret flinched at his outburst, muttering under her breath, “I just don’t think Clara is good enough for you…”
Ethan ignored her and gestured to the bodyguard behind him, “Take Lucas back to the Old Estate. Without my permission, he’s only allowed to go to school, nowhere else.”
“Also, arrange for a plane to take my mother to South Alaska for a vacation. Immediately.”
Meanwhile, in the interrogation room at the Police Station, the lights were stark and blinding.
Clara sat in the chair, squinting slightly.
The officer across from her slid a statement across the table, his tone serious.
“Mrs. Carter, we understand that you entered Mr. Carter’s room before he fell into a coma, and there are witnesses who saw you in the room for some time.”
“It’s in your best interest to be honest with us now. Did you tamper with Mr. Carter’s oxygen supply?”
Clara looked up, meeting the officer’s gaze with unwavering composure.”I did not touch the oxygen tube, nor did I harm James Carter. I will not answer any questions until my lawyer arrives.”
“If you believe I did, then show me the evidence.”
She knew that anything she said now could be used against her. Her best course of action was to wait for her lawyer to arrive to protect her.
The police, seeing her resolute stance, pressed her with more questions, but Clara remained firm, repeating only that she would wait for her lawyer.
Frustrated, the police had no choice but to temporarily halt the interrogation and detain her in a temporary holding cell pending further investigation.
The holding cell was spartan, containing only a metal cot and a chair.
Clara sat on the chair, closed her eyes, and the events of the past few days flashed through her mind.
James Carter’s coma, Lucas’s blatant lies, Ethan’s relentless pressure, and Margaret Carter’s unrelenting hostility.
She rubbed her churchs, but felt no regret.
After what seemed like an eternity, the door to the holding cell opened and a police officer walked in, his tone slightly softened.”Mrs. Carter, you have a visitor.”
Clara opened her eyes and looked at the figure standing outside the bars, a flicker of surprise in her eyes.
“Victor Bennett, what are you doing here?”
Seeing her pale face and slightly disheveled clothes, a pang of sadness flashed in Victor’s eyes, but the words that came out were habitually laced with reproach.
“What’s going on with you? Something this big happens, and you don’t contact me?”
“If I hadn’t heard about it from a friend, were you planning to keep it from us the whole time?”
“I’m your family. If I don’t bail you out, how do you expect to get out of here?”
“Did you really think you’d spend the rest of your life in here?”
Clara glanced at him indifferently.”Contacting you? What good would that do?”
“When Mom died, I was at my most helpless.”
“You slapped me at her funeral, saying I was the reason she died.”
“And before, Olivia said I hurt her, and you immediately blamed me without even knowing the whole story.”
“You’ve never believed me, never helped me. Why would I tell you about this?”
“Victor Bennett, how dare you bring up the past!”
Seeing her cold attitude, Victor felt a surge of resentment. Hearing her mention their mother only made him angrier.
“Mom died because of you! You were crying and screaming in the car, causing the accident. Dad and I both heard it in the car’s black box recording.”

“Dad was so sick with grief because of it that time. I only slapped you once, and you’re still holding onto it!”
“Are you saying everything you hear on a dashcam is the absolute truth?”
Clara let out a cold laugh, looking at Victor with a mocking glint in her eyes. “Don’t you know how easy it is to fake a recording with today’s technology?”
