Chapter 97
Mason pushed through the crowd, heading straight for Clara and Ryan.
He could hear Ryan introducing Clara to the others, and watching Clara smile demurely beside Ryan, anger churned in his chest.
When he found out Clara would be attending the conference, he’d been excited, eagerly anticipating seeing her.
Last night, he’d imagined countless scenarios. Even if she ignored him or treated him coldly, he wouldn’t mind.
After all, he was the one in the wrong. He could beg for her forgiveness.
But now, seeing Clara standing so perfectly matched next to Ryan Walker, the string of reason in his mind snapped.
“Clara, long time no see.”

you?”
Clara’s smile faded slightly. She raised her eyes to meet Mason’s, her expression calm and indifferent.
“Is there something you need?”
Instinctively, Ryan stepped to the side, shielding Clara behind him, his eyes wary as he watched Mason.
Mason completely ignored Ryan’s movement, a contemptuous curve twisting his lips. His tone dripped with deliberate mockery.“Where’s Mr. Carter? Didn’t he come with you?”
He paused, looking Ryan up and down as if he’d just noticed him.“Is this your new pet? Haven’t seen him around before. Care to
introduce us?”
At these words, the surrounding guests paused in their activities, their gazes–curious, probing, scornful–causing Clara’s face to
harden.
She knew Mason was stubborn and reckless, but he had clearly met Ryan before. For him to say such a thing now was obviously intended to embarrass her in front of everyone, to make the others look down on her.
Ryan glared at Mason, an aura of sharp intensity radiating from him. He started to step forward, ready to confront him, but Clara gently caught his wrist.
She shook her head slightly at Ryan, then stepped forward, meeting Mason’s gaze directly, her voice cool and clear. “Ryan invited me to this mixer to introduce me to everyone. It’s my pleasure to be here.”
“Our relationship is strictly professional. There’s nothing inappropriate about it.”
“You, on the other hand, have left your pregnant fiancée at home to come here and spout nonsense. Don’t you think that’s a bit irresponsible for a soon–to–be husband?”
“Or has your interest in your fiancée already waned, Mr. Walker? Are you looking for a new thrill, so you assume anyone near me is just
that?”
“I
guess a person
with a rotten heart sees filth everywhere.”
Mason choked on her words, his forced smile vanishing, his face turning a mottled gray,
He couldn’t believe that Clara would ever defend another man against him like that!

He took a deep breath, forcibly suppressing the rage simmering within him, and tried to salvage some semblance of composure, forcing
a stiff smile.
“Well, that’s my misunderstanding then. Still, I’m just looking out for you. After all, who knows what his real motives are for getting close to you?”
“Ha, no need for you to worry about that, Mr. Walker.”
Clara scoffed, her eyes filled with disdain.“After all, I can’t exactly give anyone twenty million dollars to help them rebuild their empire
now, can I?”
Hearing this, Mason felt a pang of guilt, knowing Clara was referring to the time he’d misunderstood her years ago. He stepped
forward, reaching out to take her hand.“Clara, I…”
“Don’t touch me!”
Clara sidestepped his touch, looking up at Mason with icy eyes.“Mason Walker, we’re over. I just want you to stay away from me in the
future!”
“My life is none of your concern anymore!”
“None of my concern?”
Mason took a step back, staring at Clara in disbelief, as if he were reliving the day she was escorted into the police car.
“We grew up together. How could I not care about what happens to you?”
“How do you plan to ‘care‘?”
Clara looked at him coldly.“Are you going to use some fabricated evidence to send me to the National Security Agency for questioning
again?”
“Mason Walker, I don’t need your concern anymore.”
Mason stood there, watching the two figures walk away hand in hand, his face darkening.
“Mason.”
Emma, calculating when the drug would take effect, walked to Mason’s side and took his arm. “Don’t be upset. Everyone’s watching. It doesn’t look good.”
Sensing the stares from the people around them, Mason’s irritation grew. He shook off Emma’s hand, his tone harsh.“What are you doing here?”
Emma felt a pang of hurt from the coldness in his eyes. A trace of hurt flickered in her eyes as she lowered her head, her voice slightly
choked.
“I heard you were attending the conference without a date and wanted to see if there was anything I could do to help.” Mason glanced down at her, noticing her pale complexion and a hint of sickness. He then remembered that she had recently been discharged from the hospital after experiencing some pregnancy complications.
He frowned, his tone softening slightly.“I don’t need you here. Go home and rest if you’re not feeling well.”
Hearing Mason’s rare concern, Emma’s heart fluttered with joy, and a gentle smile spread across her face as she looked up at him.
But Mason’s gaze didn’t land on her; instead, it drifted past the crowd, fixated on the backs of Clara and Ryan, his eyes filled with the

possessiveness she knew so well.

The smile froze on Emma’s face, a surge of resentment and anger flooding her heart. She gripped the hem of her skirt tightly, her nails digging into her palm, wishing she could rush over and slap Clara across the face.
But remembering what she had to do next, she blinked and forced down her emotions.
“What did Clara say to you just now? Why do you look so upset? And who’s the guy with her?”
Mason’s face darkened.“None of your business. Stay out of it.”
The medication she had just taken was starting to take effect. Emma raised a hand to her aching lower abdomen, fine beads of sweat breaking out on her forehead.
“I can’t do that.”
She forced herself to stand tall, her gaze fixed on Clara.“No matter what, she’s still my sister. How can I just stand by and watch her
make mistakes?”
She smiled at Mason.“She’s dwelling on the past and won’t listen to you. I’ll have a good talk with her. She’ll listen to me.”
With that, before Mason could react, she lifted her skirt slightly and headed toward Clara.
Mason watched her retreating figure, his brow furrowed slightly, but he didn’t stop her.
“Clara, sorry to interrupt, but I need to talk to you.”
Ryan Walker was in the middle of a conversation with Clara and a few investors, giving her a subtle glance.
Clara gave him a slight nod, indicating that she could handle the situation herself.
Understanding, Ryan continued his conversation with the investors, but his eyes remained fixed on Clara and Emma Anderson.
“What do you want to talk about?”
Clara walked a short distance away, frowning slightly as she looked at Emma’s pale face.
She didn’t feel there was anything left to discuss with Emma. Bringing her along was merely to avoid making a scene in front of the
investors.
Her lower abdomen was increasingly painful. Emma forced a smile, glancing at Ryan Walker not far away. “You haven’t divorced Mr. Carter yet, have you? Is it really appropriate to be seen in public with another man like this?”
Clara resisted the urge to roll her eyes.“That’s none of business.”
your
What was it with these two? Why were they both so concerned about her personal affairs?
“If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going.”
Clara turned to leave, but Emma stepped forward and grabbed her wrist.
“Clara, wait.”
A sharp, throbbing pain in her lower abdomen caused Emma to tighten her grip.“Aren’t you afraid of what the Carter family might do to you if they find out about you and him?”
“I can’t control what you do, but in the eyes of the Carters, you’re still my cousin. If this affects the Andersons, my dad will never forgive you.”

Her voice was icy, her eyes filled with disgust.“Emma, we’re nothing to each other anymore. Stop hiding behind this ‘cousin‘ act to interfere with my life.”
“Clara, I’m just worried about you…”
Emma, released from Clara’s grip, seized the moment. A flicker of triumph flashed in her eyes as she stumbled backward, falling heavily to the ground.
“Ah!”
She cried out in pain, clutching her abdomen tightly.
“It hurts so much, my stomach hurts! Clara, why did you push me…?”
“The baby, my baby…”
The sudden commotion stunned everyone nearby, and they quickly gathered around.
“Blood, she’s bleeding!”
Someone gasped.
A crimson stain was spreading beneath Emma’s dress, the color a shocking, grotesque bloom against the white carpet.
Mason had hurried over as soon as he heard Emma’s cry. When he saw the stark red stain, his pupils constricted.
“Emma!”
He knelt beside Emma, cradling her in his arms, his eyes momentarily blank as he stared at his trembling hands.
Emma leaned against him, her face as white as a sheet, her breath shallow.
Slowly, she lifted her gaze, her eyes meeting Clara’s over Mason’s shoulder, filled with disbelief.“Clara… why did you push me?”
“Even… even if you blame Mason and me for interfering, you shouldn’t have targeted my baby…”
Mason, already frantic at the sight of the growing pool of blood beneath Emma, snapped his head up at Clara, his eyes bloodshot.
Clara stood frozen, her expression icy as she watched Emma’s pathetic display.
“I didn’t push her.”
“Instead of wasting time accusing me, you should call an ambulance. If you get her to the hospital now, you might still save the baby.”
“How can you even say that!”
Mason’s grip tightened around Emma, his voice laced with fury. “She’s your cousin, and she’s carrying a child, a child that’s related to you by blood!”
“No matter how much you hate her, hate the Anderson family, you shouldn’t resort to something this cruel!”
From where he’d been standing, he’d only seen Clara shake Emma’s hand off, not actually push her.
But hearing Clara speak so coldly, even in the face of such a situation, solidified his belief that she didn’t care about the baby.

“Clara didn’t push her.”
Ryan walked calmly to Clara’s side, subtly shielding her behind him.
“I was watching from nearby. Miss Anderson fell on her own. Clara had nothing to do with it.”
Mason already harbored resentment toward Ryan, and hearing this only fueled his anger.
He scoffed, “You’re with Clara, so of course you’ll take her side. No one will believe you.”
“Whether they believe me or not isn’t up to you.”

Clara stepped out from behind Ryan, her gaze sweeping over the surrounding guests.”There are plenty of people here. Surely someone saw what happened.”
“Instead of arguing here, we should call the police and let them check the security footage and find witnesses. The truth will come out soon enough.”
Hearing this, Emma, who had been barely holding on, struggled and weakly clutched at Mason’s collar.
“Mason… don’t call the police… Clara’s my cousin. I can’t let her get arrested… Even if… even if I lose the baby, it’s just my bad luck. I can… I can have more kids later.”
Hearing these words, Mason looked down at Emma’s pale, weak face, and a montage of their moments together flashed through his
mind.
Yes, Emma had always been gentle and kind to him.
Even if the Anderson family had schemed to get Clara married into the Carter family, concealing the twenty million dollars, it wasn’t something she could control.
Seeing Emma in such a miserable state, a flicker of pity crossed his eyes, and he lowered his head, saying softly, “Okay, I’ll do as you say. No police.” With that, he looked up at Clara, a hint of hesitation in his eyes, and after a long pause, he finally said, “Clara, you better pray that Emma and the baby are okay, or I won’t let this go!”
Finishing his sentence, he carefully picked up Emma, turning to shout at his assistant, “What are you waiting for? Call an ambulance
now!”

The assistant quickly pulled out his cell phone to dial for emergency services, and the surrounding guests all made way, their eyes filled with curiosity as they looked at Clara.
Clara didn’t care at all, just coldly watching Mason carry Emma away in a hurry, a sneer escaping her lips.
Judging from Mason’s words, he was already aware of what the Anderson family had been up to all these years. That’s why Emma panicked and staged such a vile scene in public.
But, no matter how ruthless Emma might be, how could she, as a woman, use her unborn child to frame her?
Thinking of this, a hint of doubt flickered in Clara’s eyes.
Unless… there was something wrong with the child itself!
The wail of an ambulance siren grew louder.
Clara stood at the entrance of the venue, watching paramedics and Mason carefully lift Emma into the ambulance and rush her to the

hospital.
“Do you want to go and see what happens?”
Ryan turned to Clara.“If your cousin pins this on you, Mason won’t let it go so easily.”
“No need.”
Clara shook her head. “I didn’t do it, and going there would only make me look guilty.”
“Besides, Mason has never let me off the hook.”
He used to resent her for marrying Ethan, and later, after learning the truth about what happened back then, he kept pursuing her relentlessly. Even if he knew she didn’t push Emma, would he just cut ties with her? Never.
“But, I don’t intend to just take this lying down.”
Ryan instantly understood what she meant.“What do you want to do?”
Clara thought for a moment.“Can you get someone to help me check Emma’s medical records?”
“The sooner, the better. We need to get ahead of the Anderson family.”
It wasn’t that she had no way of finding out what was going on with Emma’s baby.
Merrur
It was just that the last time she had an abortion at the hospital, the Anderson family suppressed the information and didn’t tell Ethan.
This meant the Anderson family must have connections within the hospital. Her contacts weren’t as fast as the Andersons‘. She could only ask Ryan if he had other ideas.
Ryan pondered for a moment.“Medical records are personal and can’t be accessed casually. However, if we request them through
them.” official channels under the guise of ‘assisting in the investigation of an accident,‘ we might be able to get
He looked at Clara, his tone reassuring.“Leave it to me. Don’t worry.”
Clara looked up at him, a flicker of warmth in her eyes.
If it had been anyone else by her side just now, they wouldn’t have immediately stepped in to protect her and believe in her.
Ryan’s trust and support was like a ray of light, dispelling the chill in her heart.
“Okay, thank you.”
As Clara watched Emma, the supposed victim, leave the scene, and saw that Mason didn’t pursue the matter, the crowd gradually dispersed, though some still glanced back at Clara, whispering amongst themselves.
Ryan stepped in front of Clara, blocking their view. “It’s too crowded here. Let’s leave first and discuss everything else once we have the medical records.”
“Okay.”
Clara nodded, following Ryan as they turned to leave the venue.
