Leilani cooked dinner.

After she and Leo ate, the boy pressed his face against the window, staring up at the sky in anticipation. "Mom, is your studio's firework show happening tonight?"

Leilani was a pyrotechnic designer who ran a fireworks studio under the Watkins Corporation umbrella.

Three months ago, they had won the bid for the city's central plaza firework display. She and her team had poured their hearts into it, running countless tests before finally finalizing the "Star River For You" display.

The show was set to debut tonight, on New Year's Eve.

Leilani walked over and crouched down beside him. "Do you want to go to the plaza and watch the fireworks?" she asked patiently.

Leo nodded vigorously.

Right at that moment, Leilani's phone buzzed. The word "Honey" flashed on the screen.

Her expression darkened slightly as she answered the call.

After making sure she could hear him, Preston spoke softly, "Leila, I'm coming to pick you and Leo up so we can watch the fireworks at the plaza. I'll be there in about half an hour. Get ready. It's really cold out tonight, so bundle up."

Leilani had absolutely no desire to go. But Leo was bouncing with excitement beside her, his big, watery eyes full of anticipation.

She pressed her lips together. "Okay."

After hanging up, Leilani bundled Leo in a thick winter coat and wrapped a cashmere scarf she had knitted around his neck. He looked like a puffy little marshmallow.

She put on her own white winter coat, and the two of them were ready to go.

Leo couldn't wait any longer. "Mom, I'm going to wait for Preston by the door!"

Leilani checked the time; there were about five minutes left. She grabbed her bag and walked out with him.

It was still snowing. Leo squatted by the front door of the house, rolling up snowballs.

Minutes ticked by. Leo started to shiver, pressing himself against Leilani's side. "Why isn't he here yet?" he asked, his nose stuffy.

Leilani checked her phone. Preston was thirty minutes late.
