At the auction entrance.
A ticket inspector in a crisp uniform held out his hand. "Please show your invitation and VIP card."
"Leilani Sandoval. Preston Watkins's wife," Leilani said calmly.
The inspector frowned, his scrutinizing gaze sweeping from Leilani's face down to the hem of her dress. "Mr. and Mrs. Watkins already registered and entered the venue three minutes ago."
Leilani frowned. "Call Preston."
The inspector's lips curled into a smirk, looking at her with a hint of mockery. "Mr. Watkins is with his wife right now. Wouldn't I just be asking for trouble if I bothered him?"
He had seen enough of how things worked in these circles. Husbands brought their mistresses for private fun, but when it came to official business, they brought their actual wives. If a mistress was as clueless as the woman standing in front of him, her good days were numbered.
Just as Leilani pulled out her phone.
"Leilani!"
A cheerful, familiar voice rang out.
Leilani looked up. Sure enough, she saw Naomi Watkins running toward her.
Naomi affectionately linked arms with her. "Leilani, you made it! Why haven't you gone in yet?"
Leilani cast a glance at the inspector.
Naomi frowned in displeasure, turning to the man. "Are you the one stopping her from going inside?"
The inspector opened his mouth to defend himself.
Naomi cut him off. "Save it. Go pick up your paycheck for the month. You're fired."
The inspector's face turned pale. He looked at Leilani pleadingly. "Ma'am, please..."
Leilani looked away. Everyone had to pay the price for their actions.
She followed Naomi into the hall. A sudden, urgent phone call pulled Naomi away. "Leilani, they need me backstage. Go find my brother in VIP Room 3."
With that, Naomi dashed off in a hurry.
Leilani watched her disappear around the corner before heading toward the back of the auction hall.
"Preston, isn't that Leilani? I thought you said she wasn't coming."
The voice came from above. Leilani recognized it as Sienna Monroe's. She ignored it.
But Sienna called out to her again. "Leilani, Preston and I are up here. Come join us."
Leilani glanced up, seemingly by chance. She saw Sienna leaning against the balcony, watching her with a half-smile. It felt like a flaunt.
