We Are Officially Divorced novel Chapter 16

Chapter 16

Just as they reached the traffic light, Julian stopped the car and looked at her with a deep, unreadable gaze.

“I’m not dissatisfied. If you insist on getting a divorce, I can leave with nothing. I never intended to threaten you. I just have too many questions left unanswered, and I can’t accept it, that’s all.”

Hearing the words ‘can’t accept it’ from Julian, a trace of surprise flashed across Amelia’s face.

“What is it that you can’t accept? Is it being divorced without knowing, or is it that I was the one who brought up divorce first?”

“Neither, Lia.”

Seeing the confusion on her face, Julian let out a bitter laugh twice, his low voice carrying a sigh that was hard to describe.

“I can’t accept being misunderstood by you, I can’t accept that you won’t give me any chance, I can’t accept drawing a clear line between us like this.”

This time, it was Amelia’s turn to fall silent.

She didn’t quite understand what he meant by those words.

Hadn’t he secretly loved Elizabeth for many years? After the divorce, shouldn’t he go propose to her right away?

Why was he dragging her here to talk about all these ambiguous things? And why did his tone sound so intimate?

This silence gave Julian the chance to bare his heart.

“Lia, after I watched that video, I already understood why you wanted to leave. You think I still have feelings for Lizzie, don’t you?”

“Isn’t that the case?”

Her rhetorical question added another layer of guilt to Julian’s heart.

He forced down the sour ache welling up inside him, his voice soft but filled with sincerity and apology.

“I’m sorry. There are things I should have made clear to you long ago, but I kept putting it off, which led to your misunderstanding and pain for so long. It’s all my fault. I’m sorry, Lia.”

To Amelia, his apology sounded abrupt and strange.

But she didn’t want to dwell on his words.

All she wanted was to end everything quickly and gain her freedom once and for all. She had no patience for his belated remorse.

“You really did wrong me, so if you want to make it up to me, just agree to the divorce as soon as possible. As long as I get the divorce certificate, I can forgive all your mistakes.”

All the words Julian had prepared for so long were stuck in his throat by that one sentence.

The sorrow in Julian’s eyes grew even deeper.

“But I don’t want a divorce, Lia. I’m trying to keep you. Can you give me one more chance?”

Amelia was stunned. She frowned and looked at him, even rubbed her eyes, half-suspecting whether the man before her was really Julian, and half-wondering if there was some trap behind his words.

“You’ve been heartbroken for three years and still haven’t moved on. I’ve tried to please you for three years and you never responded. That only proves our marriage was a rash and mistaken decision from the start. The reason I want a divorce is just to correct that mistake. Now that Elizabeth is divorced and interested in you, shouldn’t you support my decision and bravely pursue your true love? Why must you keep tangling with me over this divorce?”

“Because from the day Lizzie got married, I decided to see her only as a sister. Because from my perspective, our marriage was neither a mistake nor rash. I truly wanted to spend my life with you.”

After knowing Julian for so many years, this was the first time Amelia had ever heard him speak so seriously, almost like a confession.

But she had already awakened from that unrealistic ten-year-long dream and would not be moved by a few words anymore.

She closed her eyes, avoiding his burning gaze, her tone calm and sharp.

“Do you even believe what you’re saying?”
