What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 109

"Daddy, your beard is growing out!" Brynlee was in high spirits because she was finally going home. She reached out with her little hand and rubbed Finnian's chin. "It's prickly!"

Finnian caught her hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles. "I will shave as soon as we get home, okay?"

"Okay! Ooh, you should have Mommy shave it for you!" Brynlee's little mind was always working, and she dropped the suggestion out of nowhere.

Finnian caught sight of Kaia and Miles walking up behind them. The two were deep in a discussion about a collaborative project now, both looking intensely focused.

His eyes darkened. Hadn't he spent the night keeping Noelle company? Shouldn't his 'first love' have made sure he was perfectly groomed?

"Mommy can't help with that," Kaia answered smoothly, addressing her daughter rather than him.

Finnian forced a chuckle. "I can do it myself."

Brynlee pouted, clearly disappointed. "But on TV, the mommies always help the daddies shave, and sometimes they even help them wash their hair! Why can't Mommy help you?"

Finnian winced. It was painfully obvious the kid was trying to play matchmaker and fix her parents' broken relationship.

He couldn't help but glance at Kaia. She stared blankly at the elevator numbers, completely unbothered.

But the most uncomfortable person in the elevator was undeniably Miles, who suddenly felt like he was trespassing in a war zone.

Thankfully, the elevator was empty and quickly reached the ground floor. Finnian carried Brynlee toward his parked car.

"My car is in the underground lot," Kaia said. "You go ahead and take her home."

"I'm parked down there too," Miles added with a polite smile.

Finnian had no choice but to carry his daughter toward the main exit. As the elevator doors slid shut behind him, he stopped and threw a long, dark look over his shoulder.

On the eighth day of the New Year, the corporate grind officially resumed. The city buzzed back to life, energized and chaotic.

Kaia had an important meeting at Veridian Future that morning. She dropped Brynlee off at her parents' house early. Jane and Warren beamed with joy the second they saw their granddaughter.

After her morning at Veridian, Kaia had to rush over to Aethelstan Biopharma's headquarters at 3:00 PM. Gordon Hayes had called her in to finalize the handover of a few lingering projects.

When Kaia arrived on the 13th floor, the open-plan office was already swamped with activity. Gordon was waiting for her near his office.

Suddenly, someone shrieked, "Yasmine! What's wrong? You're completely pale!"

Kaia's head snapped up. A few desks away, a young female employee was slumped in her office chair, her face ashen, forehead drenched in cold sweat. She sat entirely frozen, tears streaming silently down her face.
