Noelle smiled brightly. "Oh stop, you're younger and prettier. Finnian, you should introduce some excellent men to Heather so she can get married soon."
Noelle turned her head, her arm practically glued to Finnian's. That kind of natural physical closeness seemed to be second nature to her.
Finnian smiled and said, "Heather probably already has someone she likes. She might not be interested in anyone I introduce."
Heather's face instantly flushed red, and she let out an awkward laugh. "What are you talking about, Mr. Sanders? I don't have anyone I like."
Noelle put on a look of exaggerated surprise and grabbed Heather's arm. "Wow, keeping secrets from me! You have someone you like and you didn't even tell me? Come on, whisper it to me. I promise I won't tell a soul."
Heather didn't dare say a word. Just then, the Kendrick cousins walked in.
Julian Kendrick was dragging his cousin, Dr. Miles Kendrick, by the arm. As Miles entered, his deep gaze swept the room. When he didn't spot the person he was looking for, a flash of disappointment crossed his eyes.
Heather watched Miles, her eyes sparkling, before the red on her face spread all the way to her ears, forcing her to swallow her secret feelings.
"Uncle Miles is here!" Brynlee ran over happily to say hi.
Julian immediately squatted down. "Which Uncle Kendrick are you talking to?"
Without missing a beat, Brynlee pointed her little finger right at Miles. "This one, of course."
Kids were brutally honest about who they liked, completely oblivious to social pleasantries.
Julian gave Finnian a pitiful look. "Your little princess is already playing favorites."
Finnian laughed warmly and waved to his daughter. "Brynlee, this is Uncle Julian."
"Oh! But I think this uncle is way more handsome," Brynlee reached out and grabbed Miles's finger, her little face blushing shyly as she stole glances at him with her big, dark eyes.
Julian turned to stone on the spot and immediately stood up straight. "No way, I'm just an inch shorter than him. Does that really drop my attractiveness that much?"
Julian's joke made the whole room burst into laughter.
Embarrassed by all the attention, Brynlee's cheeks turned bright red. She buried her face in her dad's chest, grabbing his arm to hide.
Everyone was laughing, except Heather. She took a frustrated sip of her drink, glaring at the little know-it-all.
Heather was well aware of Miles's complicated feelings for Kaia. Outsiders might not notice, but since Heather had a crush on him, she overanalyzed his every move and look, uncovering the hidden meaning behind all of it.
