She was holding a glass of wine, deep in conversation with an older man. She looked relaxed, gentle, and completely at ease.
Standing right next to her was Silas, holding a small toy in one hand and carrying Brynlee in the other. The two were laughing hysterically at some shared joke.
Finnian stood in the doorway, took a deep breath, and stepped inside.
"Cousin!" Silas spotted him immediately and walked over with Brynlee. "Brynlee, Dad is here."
Finnian naturally reached out and took his daughter from Silas's arms. His assistant, Dexter, stepped forward and handed over a gift box. Judging by the packaging, it was an incredibly expensive, limited-edition men's watch.
"You're always so generous, Cousin," Silas smiled as he took it, casually tossing it onto the table piled high with other gifts, clearly not making a big deal out of it. "Make yourself at home. Kaia is over there if you want to say hi."
Finnian carried Brynlee straight toward Kaia.
"Mom, look who's here!" Brynlee laughed happily. "Dad is here!"
Kaia turned, her gaze sweeping calmly over Finnian. The guest she had been speaking with tactfully excused himself, leaving the family of three alone.
"Did you guys get here early?" Finnian was the first to speak.
"Just arrived," Kaia replied casually.
Brynlee pouted her little lips. "Mom, we've been here a long time."
Kaia just smiled. "We haven't even had cake yet, so it hasn't been that long."
Standing beside her, Finnian suddenly didn't know what to say. Luckily, a crowd of guests quickly gathered around to chat with him, saving him from the awkwardness.
As everyone ate and drank, staff wheeled in a massive cake.
The design was totally unique.
It looked like a planet straight out of a sci-fi movie—massive, perfectly round, and incredibly fun.
"Wow, what planet is that? It's so big and round!" Brynlee was completely mesmerized, putting her hands over her mouth and gasping.
Silas smiled as he saw how captivated the little girl was. "It's modeled after Neptune. It's my favorite planet."
"Uncle Silas, you are so interesting! I'm going to be your little fan!" Brynlee beamed brightly.
Seeing his daughter staring at the cake without even blinking, Finnian reached out and rubbed her head.
"Mr. Sanders, make a big wish! How about wishing for Veridian to go public next year?"
The joke made the entire room burst into laughter.
Silas's gaze swept over the crowd before finally landing on Kaia. A smile played on his lips. "If you say a wish out loud, it won't come true. Don't try to goad me. But I'll definitely wish for certain things to go my way in the future."
But Kaia deliberately avoided making any eye contact with him whatsoever. Her entire focus was entirely on Brynlee.
As the party drew to a close, Kaia wanted to take Brynlee home early, so she went to say goodbye to Silas.
"Kaia, did you have some wine earlier? Should I have my driver take you back?" Silas asked with genuine concern.
"Sure, thanks for the trouble," Kaia admitted she had had a little to drink.
"No need. Dexter drove me here," Finnian suddenly interrupted, his tone inexplicably stiff.
He looked at Kaia. "Brynlee is sleepy. Let's head back early."
But Kaia simply said flatly, "No thanks. I'll take a designated driver. I need my car tomorrow."
She turned down Finnian's offer and carried Brynlee out.
Silas stood by, arms crossed and eyes dark, watching the exchange without saying a word.
After two seconds of strained silence, Finnian forced out, "Drive safe."
Kaia turned to Silas. "Thanks for the invite. Happy Birthday."
