Elaine reached out and gently grasped her hand. "I watched you grow up. I raised you into the woman you are today. You are my daughter."
"Mom..." Noelle threw herself into Elaine's arms, her voice thick with earnest emotion. "You're the only mother I have. You're the only one I recognize."
Hearing this, Elaine was overjoyed. She nodded repeatedly, her own eyes growing misty. "Oh, I know, I know. Come on now, don't cry. You'll ruin your makeup. Go touch up your face, and then meet me on stage. I'll go say a few words first."
"Okay, Mom," Noelle said, the anxiety vanishing from her heart. Watching Elaine walk away, she secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
Then, a vicious surge of anger flooded her eyes.
Who was trying to ruin her? Who would wait for this exact, crucial moment to send Elaine a photo of her and her biological mother?
Noelle bit her lip hard. Through the glass window, she locked her gaze on Kaia, glaring at her with venomous hatred.
At that moment, Kaia was sitting with her parents. Brynlee was getting tired and bored, slouching against the sofa. Finally, she ran over to Finnian, grabbing his fingers and shaking them. "Dad, I want to play Candy Crush."
Finnian paused. He did have that little game downloaded on his phone.
"Brynlee, wait a little while. Grandma is about to go on stage and give a speech," Finnian coaxed, trying to distract her.
"No! I want to play right now. I'm so bored," Brynlee pouted, her stubborn streak showing.
Left with no choice, Finnian pulled out his phone, opened the game app, and handed it to her. Brynlee immediately beamed.
She took the phone, intending to close the window and bring the game back up, but she realized the screen had jumped into a private messaging app. As she closed the ad, a list of chat conversations appeared. The name pinned at the very top was Noelle Lawrence.
Kaia's breath hitched. Every muscle in her body pulled taut. She instinctively glanced in Finnian's direction.
He was talking to a guest, looking the other way.
With trembling, ice-cold fingers, Kaia tapped open the chat log.
Above just a few lines of text was a photo of a Pregnancy Test Report.
