"Are you really going into the office today?" Finnian asked.
"Yes." Kaia didn't think it was a big deal. She knew her own body perfectly well. The illness was just a physical crash caused by severe emotional stress, compounding exhaustion, and the changing weather. All she needed was proper nutrition and her medication to bounce back.
Finnian didn't press the issue. He simply told Brynlee to go back to eating. Kaia sat down and slowly ate her oatmeal.
"How is the joint lab project between Vanguard and Concordia Health progressing?"
Kaia paused. She hadn't expected him to bring up work at the breakfast table.
She shifted into professional mode. "Next Wednesday's evaluation meeting will primarily review compliance regarding preliminary data sharing. Vanguard has already finalized the terms. I'll be attending the meeting personally to address any concerns."
Her tone was flat, efficient, and strictly business.
Finnian nodded, his eyes lingering on her face for a barely noticeable second. "Good. With you handling these details, I don't have to worry about Vanguard's expansion. Send me a copy of the evaluation results once it's done."
Kaia nodded, showing zero emotion. "Will do."
Finnian's grip on his fork tightened slightly. Her perfect cooperation and placid demeanor gave him the unsettling feeling of losing control. He had intentionally brought up work first thing in the morning, pretending last night never happened, just to test her reaction.
But she was strictly business, entirely stripped of the softness a wife would usually have.
"Dr. Miles Kendrick is leading that project on their end, right? I'm sure he won't make things too difficult for you," Finnian remarked, casually dropping Miles's name with a faint smile.
This time, Kaia didn't even bother looking at him. She simply replied, "Miles has always had a very clear direction when it comes to investments. He places a high value on the integration of clinical applications and actual technological implementation."
Finnian hummed in response and didn't push it further. Kaia calling him 'Miles' so casually acted like a stop sign, forcing him to drop the subject.
He turned his attention back to their daughter, coaxing her to finish the last of her milk. Then he said, "Brynlee, Mom's not feeling well today, so I'm taking you to school."
Brynlee nodded, then looked at Kaia. "Mom, you need to rest! Don't work too hard."
Kaia felt a rush of warmth at her daughter's sweet words. She smiled and nodded. "Don't worry, sweetie. Mom will take good care of herself."
That afternoon, Kaia had to attend a meeting at the corporate headquarters. When the meeting wrapped up, she walked straight toward the CEO's office.
Outside the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, the city skyline was bathed in the golden, late-afternoon sun.
Kaia knocked on the door. Hearing the man's voice grant entry, she pushed it open.
