Kaia walked over and sat in the chair across from his desk.
Finnian moved to the edge of the desk but didn't sit down. Instead, he leaned against it, bracing his hands on the edge, looking down at her from an imposing height.
"Brynlee's condition is stable now, and we both heard exactly what Miles said. If we want her to live a normal life, we as parents need to make some compromises." Finnian's tone was calm but carried a heavy weight.
Kaia listened quietly, her fingers curling inward.
"What? Still haven't figured out how to handle our situation?" Finnian's tone grew colder.
"I won't agree to a divorce." When Kaia didn't answer, he bluntly stated his position.
Kaia's heart skipped a beat. She had logically considered this over the last few days.
Seeing her maintain that icy facade, an inexplicable irritation flared in Finnian's chest.
He rarely felt this kind of turbulent emotion, but Kaia just had a knack for bringing it out in him.
Ignoring her lack of response, Finnian slipped his hands into his suit pants pockets and looked at her steadily. "How about you listen to my proposal first?"
Kaia took a breath and nodded. "Go ahead."
"I know your heart isn't in this anymore. But for Brynlee's sake, we will maintain our marriage on paper. Of course, I will give you complete freedom and space. If living with me makes you uncomfortable, you can find a reason to move out of the house and live wherever you want. But we will share nominal custody of Brynlee." Finnian stared straight into her eyes, laying down the law word by word.
Kaia looked up at him, saying absolutely nothing.
Taking her silence as a reluctant agreement, Finnian added, "Once Brynlee is older, her health is stronger, and she's fully recovered from her surgery, we can officially file the paperwork. Rest assured, I won't demand anything from you during this time."
Kaia was utterly speechless. Usually, in her line of work, if she found a data error, she'd fix it ruthlessly and immediately.
But applying that kind of ruthless efficiency to a marriage was impossible.
The memory of her daughter's pale face and tiny body in the emergency room hung over Kaia like a giant net, trapping her.
Finnian saw the struggle and helplessness in her eyes.
He softened his tone, revealing a hint of exhaustion. "Kaia, I know we have a lot of issues, but Brynlee's safety comes before everything else. She needs to grow up in a complete home environment, right?"
"Fine," Kaia said, looking him dead in the eye. "But we are definitely getting divorced eventually."
