What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 154

"Thank you, Silas." Kaia recognized the logo of a famous restaurant that was quite far from the hospital.

"Don't mention it. If you need anything at all, just let me know. I'm on standby," Silas said before politely excusing himself and leaving with his assistant.

Watching his broad back retreat, Kaia felt a pang of bitterness. They were both executives, but there was clearly a world of difference between them.

Kaia returned upstairs, her emotions finally settling. Brynlee was happily chatting away in the room, keeping Josephine and Elaine entertained.

Finnian sat by the bed, his face much more relaxed than before.

When Kaia walked in with the takeout bags, Finnian's eyes darkened.

Elaine noticed immediately and stood up. "You had time to go all the way to that restaurant for takeout..."

"Silas had his assistant pick this up, not me," Kaia said as she opened the boxes, revealing some light food, soup, and noodles.

Elaine muttered, "That Silas is certainly eager to please."

Josephine shot Finnian a look and scoffed. "Some people who act like they're above it all could learn a thing or two."

Elaine looked awkward. She glanced at Finnian, who was sitting on the couch, looking utterly unfazed, as if he hadn't heard a word.

After finishing her IV drip and eating some food, Brynlee begged to go for a walk downstairs, hating being cooped up in the room. Elaine and Josephine suggested taking her down to the hospital's garden. Kaia and Finnian agreed, gently reminding Brynlee to take it easy.

Brynlee stayed under observation for two days. Finnian and Kaia stayed by her side the entire time, even working from the hospital. Time seemed to slow down.

All external conflicts and drama were completely blocked out.

In their eyes, the only thing that mattered was their fragile daughter.

Noelle visited twice, bringing gifts and healthy snacks.

Because Kaia was there, Noelle didn't stay long. Finnian walked her to the elevator, and they chatted briefly about work and personal matters.

During these two days, Kaia didn't mention the divorce, and Finnian acted as if the conversation had never happened.

Aside from co-parenting Brynlee, there was virtually no personal communication between them.

Finnian actually wanted to talk, but every time he met Kaia's cold gaze, he swallowed his words. Even accidental physical contact made Kaia pull away as if burned.

His brow furrowed.

Work returned to normal. Kaia was drowning in a backlog of tasks when she got a call from Finnian around noon, asking her to come up to his office.

Sensing what it was about, Kaia grabbed a quick bite and headed up.

The afternoon light spilled across the dark carpet. Kaia knocked. Finnian was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, hands in his pockets, rather than sitting in his imposing leather executive chair.

The light outlined his tall, broad-shouldered frame perfectly.

Upon hearing him permit her to enter, Kaia stepped inside.

Seeing his back to her, she stood right where she was.

Finnian slowly turned around. Dressed in a black shirt and vest, he looked as taut as a drawn bow. His face was unreadable, but the days spent at the hospital had left faint dark circles under his eyes and a trace of redness.

His gaze landed on Kaia, much sharper and more scrutinizing than when they were at the hospital.

"Have a seat," he gestured.
