Kaia quieted down and stopped fighting him. Finnian lay down beside her. The bed was so impossibly narrow that, no matter how they positioned themselves, they were practically pressed together.
In the pitch black, every sense was heightened. Combined with the relentless, deafening barrage of rain against the metal roof just inches above their heads, sleep was entirely out of the question. It was just too loud.
Listening to his uneven breathing, Kaia's entire body went rigid.
She forced herself to mentally review the day's field data, analyzing what still needed tweaking. Then she tried picturing Brynlee's sweet little face, doing everything in her power to distract herself. In the past, this strategy had always worked. Tonight, it completely failed. The scent and physical presence of the man right behind her felt almost tangible, gnawing at her nerves.
She tried to remember the last time they had actually shared a bed. She couldn't. It felt like a lifetime ago.
Finnian lay flat on his back, hands folded over his stomach, staring blankly into the dark ceiling. The mattress was like sleeping on a slab of concrete, digging uncomfortably into his spine, but his mind was an absolute mess.
Kaia was lying right next to him. He could reach out and touch her. But somehow, ever since she demanded a divorce, ever since she grew colder by the day, he felt that even though she was right here, they were separated by an ocean.
A bitter surge of possessiveness—the pride of a husband—prompted him to roll onto his side to check on her. He found her curled up in a tight ball, facing away from him, on guard like a frightened animal.
In the dark, he swallowed hard, his throat tightening with unspoken words. He had wanted to say something, but now, the urge had entirely evaporated.
Suddenly, a blinding, violent flash of lightning struck directly above the house, the thunder cracking so loudly the entire structure shook. Kaia's body gave a violent tremor.
Without missing a beat, Finnian closed the gap. Sensing her sheer terror, he dragged her against his chest, wrapping his arms securely around her.
Kaia weakly struggled against his hold for a second, but his voice rumbled right next to her ear. "Stop moving. We're just trying not to freeze."
Kaia instantly went still.
Finnian pulled her even tighter, ensuring his heavy coat covered her completely. Her familiar, delicate scent drifted into his lungs, sparking a restless, simmering heat in his chest.
