What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 175

Elaine's face turned a shade of sickly pale, but she didn't dare utter another word, forcing herself to maintain her composure and keep eating.

She couldn't tell if she was just being paranoid, but it felt like Josephine's disdain for Noelle was a thinly veiled insult aimed directly at her.

Ugh, it drove her crazy. She had given the Sanders family two exceptional grandsons, had dutifully served her mother-in-law for half her life, and now, at the end of the day, she was being sidelined for a granddaughter-in-law. This deep-seated resentment made Elaine's bitterness toward Kaia grow even stronger.

Noelle had previously whispered warnings in her ear, suggesting that when Kaia treated Josephine's health issues, she would inevitably find a way to poison the old woman's mind against them. At the time, Elaine had told Noelle not to overthink it, insisting that Josephine was sharp, had a mind of her own, and wouldn't be swayed by anyone's idle chatter.

Looking back, she realized she was the one who had been painfully naive.

Elaine shot a glance at Kaia's perfectly serene face. Kaia was the one who had stirred up this whole storm, yet here she sat, acting completely innocent. It was infuriating enough to give someone an aneurysm.

Finnian hadn't joined the witch hunt, but he was definitely displeased. Kaia was the one demanding a divorce, promising to keep things civil for Brynlee's sake, but what was she actually doing?

Late that night!

Noelle's luxury penthouse was brightly lit.

Elaine arrived carrying several takeout containers. Noelle opened the door wearing a silk nightgown.

"Mom, it's so late. I told you not to come all this way," Noelle said softly, though a flicker of genuine surprise and joy crossed her face. "Hurry inside, it's freezing out there."

Elaine walked into the living room and set the food down. "Have you had dinner yet? I heard you weren't feeling well, so I had to come see for myself."

Noelle immediately opened the containers. Seeing all her favorite dishes, she beamed. "I was actually starving. Thank you for the care package, Mom, your timing is perfect."

She poured Elaine a glass of water before sitting down to eat.

Elaine sipped her water, watching Noelle happily enjoy her meal, but her own heart felt heavy.

"Mom, what's wrong? Is something on your mind?" Noelle asked with genuine concern.

Elaine set the glass down, a distinct edge of anger in her voice. "I heard all the gossip going around the company. At dinner tonight, I planned to check Kaia and remind her to watch her behavior. But before she even had to defend herself, your grandmother tore into me."

Noelle immediately looked heartbroken and anxious. "Mom, I'm so sorry. I caused you trouble again. What did Grandma say?"

Elaine angrily recounted the events of the evening. Noelle's face drained of color, and the food in her mouth suddenly tasted like ash.
