What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 20

Noelle's eyes suddenly reddened, but she suppressed the emotions welling up inside her.

She took a quiet breath. "Perhaps my leaving is the best choice for the Sanders family, and for the company."

After hearing her words, Finnian ripped the resignation form in half, then in half again, and tossed the pieces into the nearby wastebasket.

"I told you I would protect you, and I won't go back on my word."

"I will not let you go abroad. Get that idea out of your head."

"Finnian..." Noelle's voice trembled as she called his name.

"I am not approving your resignation." Finnian finally turned his head. Seeing the fragile tears streaming from her eyes, he grabbed a tissue.

He walked over to her and gently wiped them away. "Don't cry. Why are you still the same girl who cries the moment things get difficult?"

"I..." Noelle bit her lip. "Of course I don't want to leave the Sanders family, leave the company, or leave..."

A sudden knock on the door made Noelle swallow the word "you" before it could escape.

"Alright, we're grown-ups now. Stop being so childish. I know you're upset because I didn't invite you to the family dinner on Friday. It won't happen again. From now on, you will have a place at every family dinner." Finnian soothed her in a low voice, then patted her arm. "Go back to your post. Become that confident, dazzling Noelle Lawrence again."

Noelle looked up at the man, a dazed expression flickering in her eyes.

"I will." Noelle turned towards the door. When she opened it, she saw Kaia standing on the other side.

"Kaia, are you here to see Finnian? I'll get out of your way then," Noelle said in her usual sweet and gentle tone.

Kaia's body stiffened almost imperceptibly.

"Come in," the man's deep, magnetic voice called out.
