Celine's eyes went wide. What was the impossibly busy head of the Sanders Conglomerate doing crashing her party?
Finnian had his suit jacket draped casually over his arm. He was just in a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and the top two buttons undone.
He looked effortlessly wealthy and powerful.
Standing near the entrance, he scanned the room.
First, he spotted Brynlee playing happily with a group of kids. Then, his eyes drifted across the room until he found Kaia, who was deep in conversation with a group of elegantly dressed women.
He was just about to walk over to her.
But before he could take a step, a fierce figure in a bold red dress intercepted him.
"Well, if it isn't Mr. Sanders. What an absolute honor to have you crash my event," Celine said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Still, she waved over a waiter and handed Finnian a glass of champagne.
Finnian took it, maintaining his polite, untouchable demeanor. "I'm just here to find Kaia and my daughter. Apologies for showing up uninvited."
Celine planted a hand on her hip and let out a sharp laugh. "Did you get a good look at Kaia tonight? What do you think? I designed the dress myself."
Finnian looked past the crowd, his eyes landing on Kaia, who still hadn't noticed him.
"The dress suits her perfectly," he offered smoothly. "Your designs are truly unique, Celine."
Celine knew he was just being polite. She scoffed, "Are you saying the dress is beautiful, or the woman wearing it?"
Finnian paused, realizing Celine was openly hostile toward him.
Before he could answer, Kaia's voice cut through the tension. "Celine."
Caught in the act, Celine flashed an awkward smile. "Kaia, your timing is terrible. I was just trying to pry a compliment out of Mr. Sanders."
"Let's not do this," Kaia said quietly, not wanting to make a scene.
But Celine was still fuming. She raised an eyebrow and went for the jugular anyway. "Our Kaia has the brains, the career, and the looks. I honestly don't know what's wrong with some people's eyesight, choosing to—"
"Celine!" Kaia looked at her best friend, a silent plea in her eyes, and gave a tiny shake of her head.
Celine finally clamped her mouth shut, shooting Finnian a death glare.
Finnian kept that easy, mild smile on his face the whole time, acting as if Celine's razor-sharp insults were just friendly banter. He didn't seem bothered at all.
"Dad!" Brynlee ran over, thrilled, and wrapped her arms around his leg. She looked up with wide eyes. "Did Celine invite you too?"
Finnian bent down, scooped his daughter into his arms, and kissed her cheek. "No, sweetie. Dad was just in a meeting downstairs. I saw Mom was here, so I came up to say hi."
