The Sanders Conglomerate had been swamped with projects lately, and he was managing a million things at once.
As Finnian approached, Noelle took a sip of her drink. Her assistant, Wendy, leaned in and whispered, "Ms. Lawrence, Mr. Sanders came just for you."
Noelle's fingers trembled around the stem of her wine glass. Her heart raced, and a soft blush colored her cheeks.
She shot Wendy a chiding look, signaling her not to speak nonsense.
Finnian, dressed in a crisp white dress shirt and accompanied by several top executives from the conglomerate, took a glass of wine and turned to Noelle. "Are you enjoying yourself today?"
Noelle beamed. "I didn't think you would come."
Finnian offered a rare smile. "This is the first event you've organized. I brought some people along to show our support."
Noelle's eyes fluttered. She knew Finnian well—if he didn't care, he absolutely wouldn't waste his time at non-essential social gatherings.
His gaze briefly swept over her face before turning toward the R&D team in the distance, his expression darkening a fraction.
Just as Noelle was reveling in her triumph, she sharply caught that split-second search in his eyes. Was he looking for someone?
Who?
Her joy instantly deflated, and she swallowed her wine in a frustrated gulp.
Did he actually think Kaia was going to be here?
Noelle lowered her eyes, a surge of irritation gnawing at her chest.
Halfway through the banquet, the atmosphere was lively and buzzing.
Someone boldly started chanting for Noelle to show off her talents.
"Ms. Lawrence, you personally promised during the project meeting that if it was successful, you'd dance for us to celebrate!"
"You're a professionally trained dancer. It's bound to be a spectacular performance!"
Noelle pressed her lips together and smiled, displaying an uncharacteristic touch of shyness.
Out of the corner of her eye, she checked on Finnian.
He was sitting at the main table, quietly conversing with a few board members, completely uninvolved in the cheering crowd.
Just then, one of the directors laughed. "Finnian, Ms. Lawrence is incredibly talented. Aren't you going to show some support?"
Finnian finally looked up at Noelle, his tone mild. "Dancing is indeed one of her strong suits."
Even from a distance, Noelle heard his validation. She immediately stood up, her eyes curving with delight. "I thought you all had forgotten. But since I made a promise, I certainly can't go back on my word. I suppose I'll give it a try."
Wendy hopped onto the nearby stage, grabbing the microphone. "Everyone, give Ms. Lawrence a few minutes to change into her outfit!"
In the dressing room.
Noelle slipped into the custom-prepared, flowing vintage gown she had brought just for this occasion.
It was an ivory dress with sweeping, fluid sleeves. She casually pinned her hair up, securing it with an elegant pearl hairpin.
