What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 257

On the other end of the screen, Finnian was sitting on his sofa, eating dinner. Looking at the surroundings through the shaky camera lens, he smiled gently. "Yeah, I see it. It's beautiful."

"Wait, there's more!" Brynlee darted out of the living room and into another space. "This is Mommy's study! Look at all her favorite books, and there's a photo album of me! I picked out a little desk so I can read and study with Mommy."

The camera whipped wildly around the study, but Finnian still managed to catch sight of the oak bookshelves, the wide desk holding a lamp and a few potted plants, and the neatly organized lab station tucked against the wall.

Finnian's gaze lingered on the screen for a second longer.

Then, Brynlee sprinted into another room, pointing her little finger as she narrated. "This is the bed Grandma picked out. Mom said this room is for Grandma and Grandpa when they visit."

Hearing this, something shifted in Finnian's chest.

That sounded exactly like something Kaia would do.

"Hold on, there's one more room!" Brynlee dashed down the hallway and pushed open a door. The screen displayed a completely empty room devoid of any furniture.

Finnian's eyes darkened. Just as he was about to ask who the room was for, Brynlee answered the question for him.

"Mommy said this is going to be my playroom! I can put all my toys in here!"

Finnian was speechless.

In one breath, Brynlee had given him a grand tour of the entire apartment, detailing the exact purpose of every single room.

Finally, she stopped. Tilting her head, she shoved her face right into the camera and asked innocently, "Daddy, what about your room? Didn't Mommy leave a room for you?"

Brynlee had explored the entire apartment. All that was left was the laundry balcony and the main terrace. Was Daddy going to sleep outside?

The question hit Finnian so fast he didn't even have time to react.

"Daddy, only the balcony is left. You aren't going to set up a bed on the balcony, are you? That's too sad." Brynlee tilted her head, poking her own cheek. "How about I give you my playroom? I don't want you sleeping on the balcony."

Hearing this, the heavy gloom in Finnian's chest dissipated. He smiled dotingly at his daughter and was just about to answer when Kaia stepped into the frame, carrying two bowls.

"Brynlee, come eat your noodles," Kaia called out softly.

Brynlee immediately turned back to the phone. "Daddy, it's okay. Mommy is just really busy with work, so she forgot to leave a room for you. Don't worry, don't worry! I'll remind her right now."

With that, she abruptly hung up, completely oblivious to whatever expression was left on Finnian's face.

Kaia overheard her daughter's rambling, and her heart gave a sudden lurch.

"Come in."

The door opened, and Kaia was instantly taken aback. She quickly stood up.

It was Josephine.

Kaia hurried around the desk to greet her. "Grandmother, what brings you here?"

The matriarch, dressed in a charcoal silk blouse with her silver hair pinned up flawlessly, walked in. Ava followed closely behind her, carrying a tiered tiffin carrier.

"I just wanted to see your new environment," Josephine said, taking a seat on the single sofa and scanning the room. "It's spacious. A much bigger office than your last one, and a great view."

Kaia smiled and quickly asked her assistant, Laura, to brew a pot of lemon tea.

Ava opened the tiffin carrier, revealing several exquisite dishes—all Kaia's favorites. Josephine glanced at the spread. "Skip the cafeteria today. This should be more than enough."

Kaia quickly thanked her.

Suddenly, Josephine let out a heavy sigh, her eyes laced with a complicated mix of emotions as she looked at Kaia.
