"Noelle, please don't think like that. Kaia isn't nearly as important as you. You've lived with the Sanders family for eighteen years. I still remember when you first arrived—you were only so tall, so sweet and eager to please. Josephine doesn't mean to target you. That's just her personality, so please don't overthink it. And don't cry, you're still recovering from your injuries," Mrs. Wagner said, crouching down quickly to soothe her.
"Is that so? If I'm truly that important, why did Grandmother send me abroad? She never treated me like family. Mrs. Wagner, what do I have to do to make her like me?" Mrs. Wagner had always favored Noelle, having essentially watched her grow up. In contrast, Kaia was quiet and aloof, rarely interacting with the household staff.
"Don't worry about what Josephine thinks. Elaine and Finnian have always been on your side," Mrs. Wagner whispered comfortingly. "Finnian personally called to assign me to you. It might seem like a small gesture, but it shows you're always on his mind."
"Mrs. Wagner, I..." Noelle hesitated.
"It's not that Josephine dislikes you. It's precisely because you are so important and have such a profound influence on the men in this family that she can't afford to show you favoritism. She's just trying to keep the peace and balance in the household. It's nothing personal." As an outsider observing the family's dynamics for years, Mrs. Wagner finally voiced her true thoughts.
"I don't think I understand what you mean," Noelle said, blinking at her in confusion.
Mrs. Wagner chuckled softly. "I think I've made it quite clear. Whether it's the late master, Elaine, Rafael, or Finnian, they've all treated you as the most cherished person in their lives. You married Rafael, and only then did Finnian marry Kaia. It's a tragedy that Rafael passed away so suddenly, leaving you alone. But don't despair. You still have... Finnian."
"Mrs. Wagner, I..." Noelle's face paled as if she were terrified. She quickly covered her ears. "No, don't say that. I can't listen to this."
Seeing Noelle's fearful resistance, Mrs. Wagner knew she was hitting the mark. Noelle secretly craved to hear how the household staff viewed the situation.
"What I'm saying might sound scandalous, but it's the truth. Every maid in this house sees it. You may have lost Rafael's protection and love, but you will never be left out in the cold. Finnian will step into his brother's shoes and protect you. Kaia could never compare to you in his heart." Mrs. Wagner's words were incredibly bold, but undeniably rooted in reality.
Noelle stared at her blankly before shaking her head in distress. "No, Mrs. Wagner, please stop. You can't just say things like that, especially not where Grandmother might hear. If she found out... I wouldn't survive it."
"Don't worry, Noelle. I'd never dare utter a word of this in front of Josephine, nor to anyone outside. I'm only saying this to comfort you because I've watched you grow up," Mrs. Wagner promised, lowering her voice.
"It's still wrong. Finnian... he's Kaia's husband. I can't steal even a fraction of his affection. It's simply not right," Noelle insisted, violently shaking her head, playing the role of the morally flawless victim.
Mrs. Wagner couldn't help but laugh. "There are no strict rules when it comes to matters of the heart. Finnian values you, and no one can say otherwise—not even Kaia. Whoever holds his heart is the only one who matters."
