The classic architecture, with its gray brick and slate roof tiles, exuded a profound sense of history and quiet wealth.
Old Mrs. Quinn was lying in her second-floor bedroom, looking thoroughly drained and pale, her vitality entirely sapped by the agonizing headache.
The moment she saw Kaia, her cloudy eyes lit up. "Dr. Chavez!"
Kaia offered a warm smile. "Hello, Mrs. Quinn. Where does it hurt?"
She set down her medical kit while Brynlee blinked her large, dark eyes, looking around the room. Noticing Anna was nowhere to be seen, the little girl's face fell in sheer disappointment.
Walking in with a tray of tea and fresh fruit, Mrs. Quinn caught the little girl's crestfallen look and chuckled. "Brynlee, are you looking for Anna? She'll be home very soon."
"Really? Does she know I'm coming?" Brynlee perked right back up.
"No, she doesn't. I invited your mom over," Mrs. Quinn smiled.
"Oh! Then I can give her a giant surprise!" Brynlee beamed.
Mrs. Quinn took Brynlee down to the living room, leaving Kaia upstairs to treat the elderly woman.
Kaia began by checking the patient's pulse. Old Mrs. Quinn looked fondly at the beautiful, remarkably composed young woman—she had inherited her grandmother's steady, calming presence.
"Your circulation is sluggish. Have you also been experiencing insomnia and vivid dreams lately?" Kaia asked.
"Sigh, I just can't sleep. The moment I close my eyes, the nightmares start, and I wake up in a panic. Then I can't fall back asleep at all. By morning, I have absolutely no energy, and my head is just pounding."
Kaia knew this was a chronic condition, complicated by the patient's advanced age and underlying health issues. She didn't say much to avoid causing the older woman any additional anxiety. Instead, she prepared her acupuncture needles to relieve the immediate pain.
While Kaia was administering the treatment, Simon arrived home with Anna. The little girl had refused to come straight back after her classes, so Simon had taken her out, returning with a shopping bag full of new toys.
"Brynlee?"
"Anna!" The two little girls stared at each other in shock for a second before squealing and wrapping each other in a massive hug. Simon's handsome face registered pure astonishment.
His mother stood up from the sofa. "Your grandmother had a terrible headache today, so I asked Kaia to come take a look at her. She's upstairs right now."
Simon's breath hitched. His long legs instantly carried him toward the stairs, but afraid of making a sound, he intentionally slowed his pace as he climbed the steps.
Watching her son's frantic yet painfully cautious reaction, Mrs. Quinn sighed inwardly and shook her head.
Reaching the second-floor hallway, Simon walked silently to his grandmother's partially opened door. Peeking inside, he saw Kaia focused on administering the acupuncture needles. He held his breath, watching her quietly for a long time before heading back downstairs, not daring to disturb her.
While Brynlee was playing in the courtyard with Anna, the smartwatch hanging around her neck began to ring.
