"How can you be so sure?" Elaine thought her son was being a bit dense. Any woman would struggle to just turn a blind eye to this.

"Mom, don't worry. I said I'd handle it, and I will." Finnian clearly didn't want to discuss Kaia's feelings.

"Alright, just make sure you talk to Kaia. Tell her not to hold grudges against Noelle." Elaine's sympathies were entirely with her tragic daughter-in-law.

"There's no need. She's always been reasonable." With that, Finnian stood up and headed upstairs.

He walked into the guest room. Brynlee was playing with her toys on the bed, and the sound of running water came from the bathroom.

Finnian lay on his side, playing with Brynlee.

"Daddy, when are you and Mommy going to give me a little brother and sister?" Brynlee suddenly blurted out.

She looked at Finnian dead serious. "All my friends at school have a little brother or sister. I'm the only one who doesn't."

Finnian gently stroked his daughter's head. "So, do you want a little brother or a little sister?"

"I want both! Can you give me two at the same time?" Brynlee asked, her big, dark eyes wide with sincerity.

Finnian instantly burst out laughing. "That might be a little difficult."

"Why? Then you need to go kiss Mommy right now! Kiss her a bunch of times... then I'll get two!"

Finnian was cracking up at his daughter's logic.

Kaia, who was just about to walk out of the bathroom, heard the entire exchange. Her hand froze on the doorknob.

"Alright, Daddy will work hard to give Brynlee a little brother or sister," Finnian promised with a smile.

Kaia's heart plummeted. At the memorial service, she had clearly heard Noelle tell him on the third floor that she didn't plan on having any more children. How could Finnian promise Brynlee a sibling so easily?

"Then I'm going to go ask Mommy if she agrees!" Brynlee started bouncing happily on the bed.

"Brynlee, don't tell Mommy about this yet." Finnian quickly sat up to catch his jumping daughter, keeping his voice low.

"Why not?" Brynlee blinked.

Finnian gave a simple excuse: "Let's keep it a secret from Mommy for now, so we can give her a big surprise later."
