What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 295

"I'm sorry, Mom. It's all my fault. I made you and Dad worry." Seeing her mother cry because of her only deepened Kaia's anguish, making her feel like an ungrateful daughter.

"Don't say that. You did nothing wrong. Chasing after the man you loved wasn't wrong. What's wrong is that you didn't see him clearly..." Jane murmured, comforting her.

"Maybe I just wasn't good enough for him." Kaia bit her lip, finally admitting the truth about her impulsive choice all those years ago. It had been a dead-end street from the start. She had loved him, but he didn't love her back. He had only valued the profits she could bring to his business, her ability to elevate Aethelstan.

Their paths had been parallel lines from the beginning. It was inevitable they would never truly intersect.

"Don't be silly. There's no such thing as being 'good enough.' It's only about whether you're right for each other. Now that it's proven he's not right for you, just leave him." Jane refused to let her daughter suffer another ounce of indignity. She didn't care about elite society or billionaire status. All she wanted was for her daughter to be happy and healthy.

Kaia nodded, wiping the tears from her eyes. "I know, Mom. I'm definitely going to separate from him."

"Are you planning to wait until after Brynlee's surgery?" Jane knew Kaia prioritized her daughter's condition above everything. The poor girl's health had terrified them all. When Brynlee was a toddler, she had cried so hard she almost stopped breathing, leaving Kaia too terrified to sleep for days.

Women were inevitably tethered by their children. Especially a sentimental, soft-hearted woman like Kaia—she could never just push away a piece of her own soul.

Jane entirely supported Kaia putting Brynlee first. As a mother herself, she knew exactly what a child meant to a woman; they were more precious than life itself.

"Not necessarily." Kaia thought about the agreement she planned to sign with Finnian. In a year, they could separate peacefully. By then, they would sit down and explain everything to Brynlee. She would be over six years old and much easier to communicate with.

"Alright then. You and Finnian figure it out, just make sure you don't break the little girl's heart," Jane agreed, deciding not to interfere with the logistics.

Layla came in to call them for lunch. Since Kaia couldn't put any weight on her injured leg, she hopped to the dining room on one foot. Watching her, Jane wiped away another stray tear.

Around 7:00 PM, The Stardust Liner finally pulled into the harbor.

Finnian stood on the deck, staring off into the distance, lost in thought.

Noelle walked up next to him, watching the setting sun paint the sky a blood-red hue.

A sudden memory sparked in her mind. Noelle decided to use it as a wedge, a way to pry their relationship open just a little more.

She was running out of time. The Matriarch was practically dragging her to the altar. If she didn't force Finnian's hand soon, it would be too late.

"Finnian." Whenever there was no one else around, she called him whatever felt right. She never used formal titles; sometimes she used his full name, sometimes just his first.

He turned around. Seeing her walking against the wind in a simple white dress, her hair dancing wildly, brought him back to a sunset from many years ago.

Noelle grabbed the railing, standing shoulder to shoulder with him as they watched the fading light.

Finnian hummed in acknowledgment but said nothing else.
