What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 294

The implication hung heavy in the air.

Kaia lowered her gaze, stirring her oatmeal, knowing they were both upset on her behalf.

"He came by last night," Kaia added softly. "But he had to leave for something."

Miles stared at her, his eyes locking onto hers for two long seconds before he decided not to rub salt in the wound.

After sitting for a while, Silas took a business call. Before leaving, he told Kaia, "I have an emergency at the office. I'm going to head over. Get some rest."

Kaia nodded, watching him walk out.

Only Kaia and Miles remained in the room.

Miles glanced out the window, showing no intention of leaving. He picked up her medical chart and flipped through it.

"Miles, I know things must be busy at the hospital. You don't have to stay here with me. I've already asked my assistant to handle the discharge paperwork at ten," Kaia said gently.

"It's fine," Miles replied. "I just want to keep you company."

Kaia looked at him, suddenly at a loss for words.

The Miles she remembered was a man of few words, but he was incredibly steady and responsible. And unlike Finnian, while both were quiet men, Miles actually matched his words with his actions.

"Kaia, after everything you've been through with him... do you ever regret it?" Miles asked, his back still turned to her. He seemed focused on the chart, but his entire body was tense as he forced the question out.

Kaia froze. Confronted with such a direct question out of nowhere, her voice grew tight. "Miles, why are you asking this?"

"Because I want to know." Miles hung the chart back at the foot of the bed and turned around, looking at her intently. "I want to know why you risked everything to marry him."

Kaia was completely stunned.

The sunlight outside the window grew brighter, signaling the start of a new day.

Just then, Dexter pushed the door open. "Dr. Chavez, did your phone die? Mr. Sanders can't get through to you."

Dexter's timely interruption shattered the thick tension in the room.

Miles closed his eyes briefly, turning to face Dexter. "Where is he? When is he coming?"

Taken aback by Miles's interrogation, Dexter quickly answered, "Mr. Sanders probably won't be able to make it until tonight."
