"Fine," Kaia replied simply and ended the call.
Late that night, Brynlee woke up crying. Finnian couldn't soothe her, forcing him to call Kaia again. It took a long conversation to finally coax the little girl back to sleep.
The next morning, Kaia texted Finnian, demanding he bring Brynlee over immediately. She missed her daughter terribly.
Finnian replied with a brief acknowledgment but made no move to drop the child off.
Around nine o'clock, Layla stepped out to grab groceries. Kaia's phone buzzed. It was Simon Quinn. He was downstairs.
Kaia buzzed him in. He walked through the door carrying a basket of fruit and a few gifts, his eyes immediately dropping to her injured leg. The bandages were gone, replaced by a simple gauze patch. She could walk fine, though strenuous activity was out of the question.
"Sorry for dropping by so late," Simon said softly.
Kaia blinked in surprise, then smiled. "How did you know I was hurt?"
He set the gifts on the counter, his voice low. "My mother told me. I was out of the country and just landed this morning."
Kaia stared at him. He had come straight here? Had he even slept?
"Simon, did you fly a red-eye without getting any rest?" It felt incredibly reckless of him.
"I'm not tired," he replied with a soft smile, though the dark circles under his eyes betrayed him. He looked like he could pass out the second he hit a mattress.
"Stay for lunch," Kaia offered. "There's a daybed in my study. Go lie down."
"Are you sure?" His eyes widened slightly before a warm smile touched his lips. "I'll take you up on that, then."
Kaia opened the study door and gestured to the small bed. "Get some sleep. Don't run yourself into the ground."
"Doctor's orders," Simon chuckled softly. He walked over, lay down fully clothed, and was asleep within minutes.
Kaia gently closed the door, leaving him in peace. She headed to the kitchen to brew some coffee, sliced a plate of fresh fruit, and then settled onto the sofa with her laptop to catch up on some work.
Around ten-thirty, Layla returned. Trailing behind her were Finnian and Brynlee.
The moment Kaia saw her daughter, her heart melted. The little girl was clinging to Finnian's shoulder, her eyes red and her cheeks stained with dried tears. She looked utterly miserable.
Finnian hadn't come empty-handed; he carried a bag of groceries and gifts.
