Finnian stared at her, the rage simmering in his dark eyes threatening to boil over. "Fair? You want me to sign this so you can openly date Simon Quinn. Is that it?"
Kaia let out a mocking laugh. "Finnian, what right do you have to dictate who I see? We are getting a divorce. Stop trying to control a life you're no longer part of."
The words caught in his throat, choking him.
"Is this some twisted revenge?" Finnian demanded, his voice ragged. "Because Noelle and I grew up together? Because I protect her? Are you seriously questioning my integrity over some baseless jealousy?"
Hearing him finally address the issue head-on sent a sharp pain through Kaia's chest. She looked down at her hands. "Finnian, I'm not that bored. I just... I want the chance to start over. I'm not questioning anything anymore. Our marriage was built on transactions and utilization from the start. Talking about deep, undying loyalty now is just ridiculous."
Finnian sat rigidly, unable to formulate a response.
Kaia looked up, a faint glint of unshed tears in her eyes. "All I'm asking is for you to stop suffocating me. Is that really too much to ask?"
Finnian opened his mouth to argue, but the frustration clawed at his chest, leaving him speechless.
"If you can't accept it, then forget it. Tell Noelle to find another savior for Aethelstan," Kaia said dismissively. She stood up, walked around the desk, and reached for the agreement in his hand.
Before she could take it, his large hand shot out, wrapping tightly around her wrist. He snatched the paper back, his voice trembling with suppressed fury. "Are you... forcing my hand?"
Kaia winced at his crushing grip, but her eyes remained dead and hollow as she stared down at him.
"How am I forcing you, Finnian? Did I force you to be loyal to me during this marriage? No. I know you can't force someone to care, and I'm done trying to force a bitter fruit to taste sweet. I'm giving you a choice. So back off and stay out of my personal life."
Finnian's eyes widened. A surge of chaotic emotions battered against his ribs. Kaia felt so incredibly alive right now—her anger, her sorrow, her fierce defiance—it was a stark contrast to the docile, invisible wife she used to be.
His gaze dropped to her lips, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard.
"Fine. I accept your terms," Finnian finally gritted out. He wanted to maintain his dominance, but the impending corporate disaster left him cornered. He had no choice but to surrender.
Kaia yanked her hand free. She pulled a tissue from the box on her desk and slowly, deliberately, wiped her wrist where he had touched her.
Finnian felt a flash of sheer humiliation. She was treating him like a disease.
