"The problem right now," Noelle said, "is that we need someone to reevaluate the target's mechanism of action from the underlying logic of molecular biology, and then adjust the technical route based on the demographic data."
"This person needs a comprehensive cross-disciplinary background, familiarity with European genetic traits, and cutting-edge molecular biotechnology expertise."
Finnian understood instantly. Under those criteria, Kaia was indeed the perfect fit.
Everyone looked at Finnian. They were waiting for him to deliver the good news.
The person they needed was his wife. As Kaia's husband and the head of the conglomerate, all he had to do was whisper in her ear, and she would surely step in to help.
But given the rumors that had been swirling around the company for so long, everyone knew their relationship had hit rock bottom. Noelle was the wedge in their marriage. Kaia was furious, and the fact that she hadn't slapped Noelle was already a mercy. Asking her to bail out Aethelstan now would be asking the impossible.
"I've spoken to Kaia," Finnian said, his gaze sweeping over the room. "She's willing to help. Now, get all the data organized and send it to me. I need everything."
A collective sigh of relief washed over the room. Kaia was Aethelstan's pillar of strength. With her on board, the crisis would definitely be resolved.
Finnian noticed the sudden calm that replaced their previous anxiety. A strange feeling welled up in his chest. It seemed Kaia really was indispensable.
The meeting adjourned, and people slowly filed out.
Noelle remained seated.
Finnian didn't seem to be in a hurry to leave either. He stood with his arms crossed, still staring at the data projected on the screen.
Once the room was empty, Dexter stepped up beside him. "Mr. Sanders..." he whispered.
Finnian waved a hand to silence him.
Dexter glanced at Noelle, sighed helplessly, and left the room, making sure to pull the door shut behind him.
Seeing they were alone, Noelle's voice took on a helpless, exhausted tone. "Finnian."
He turned to her. "It'll be handled. Don't worry."
Noelle stood up, walked over, and sat beside him. She clasped her hands on the table, her emotions laid bare. "How did Kaia agree to help us? Did you agree to some condition of hers because of me?"
Finnian paused, his tone flat. "No. Don't overthink it."
Her heart sank a little further. She was convinced Kaia wouldn't be so agreeable. She must have made outrageous demands, and Finnian had surely agreed to them just to protect her.
He looked back at her, a hint of exhaustion in his eyes. "Noelle, let's just get through the immediate crisis first."
