She blinked in surprise and pushed herself up into a sitting position.
"The AC is pretty strong in here. Didn't want you catching a cold," Silas's voice floated from behind her.
Kaia rubbed her stiff neck and turned around. Silas was leaning back in a chair.
The morning sun spilled through the window, bathing him in a warm, golden light. It made him look approachable, yet undeniably magnetic.
"Uncomfortable?" he asked, his tone laced with concern.
"I'll be fine once I stretch," Kaia said, standing up and working the kinks out of her arms and legs.
Silas set down the file he was holding and crossed his arms, letting out a soft sigh. "Why push yourself until 2 AM for Aethelstan's project?"
Kaia paused and looked at him. She smiled softly. "I'm not doing it entirely for Aethelstan..."
Silas caught the implication. He lowered his gaze, his long lashes casting shadows that hid the sudden swirl of emotion in his eyes.
Right. Even though Kaia was demanding a divorce, Aethelstan was like a child she had helped raise. She felt a sense of responsibility. And, of course, there was Finnian...
Silas stood up. "I'll keep an eye on things here. Why don't you go home, take a shower, and come back?"
Kaia nodded. Her apartment was only a ten-minute drive away, and she desperately wanted to freshen up.
"Thanks. I owe you," she said, grabbing her bag and heading out the door.
After a quick shower and a change of clothes, Kaia hurried back to the office. Silas seemed to have a lighter schedule that day, so he accompanied her to the cafeteria for lunch.
While they were eating, they ran into Susan Sanders, Silas's aunt, who worked in Aethelstan's Human Resources Department.
Spotting them, Susan immediately grabbed her tray and sat down at their table.
"Aunt Susan," Silas and Kaia greeted her in unison.
Susan eyed Silas while picking at her food. "Silas, you're twenty-seven this year, right? Found a girlfriend yet?"
Silas's hand stiffened on his silverware. He shot a quick glance at Kaia. "No. I'm too busy. I don't have the time."
Susan beamed at him. "Are you really too busy, or do you just not want to date? Your parents are getting anxious. They even asked me to keep an eye out for a nice girl for you."
