"Sure, we can do that," Kaia answered smoothly.
Finnian lowered his gaze and said absolutely nothing.
Yet, Kaia could feel the temperature drop. He was clearly furious.
She didn't bother entertaining his mood, simply returning her attention to the food on her plate.
They spent the rest of the afternoon exploring before taking the cable car back down the mountain. By then, Brynlee had fallen fast asleep against Finnian's shoulder, her little cheeks flushed pink.
Finnian carried her, walking slightly ahead, while Kaia trailed a few feet behind.
The setting sun painted the sky in vivid shades of crimson, and soft tendrils of smoke drifted up from the chimneys of the hillside chalets.
"Kaia!" Finnian called out abruptly, coming to a halt.
Kaia stepped up and looked at him expectantly.
"I shouldn't have spoken to Mr. Quinn the way I did yesterday. I apologize," Finnian said out of nowhere.
Kaia blinked, momentarily thrown off guard.
"I should have maintained my composure. I know you aren't that kind of person," he added.
A faint, almost mocking smile touched Kaia's lips. "And what kind of person am I? Have you ever truly taken the time to know me?"
The question hit Finnian like a physical blow. His throat worked as he swallowed hard, completely at a loss for words.
Kaia hadn't expected a profound answer anyway. With a dismissive scoff, she brushed past him and kept walking.
On the drive back to the hotel, Kaia claimed the passenger seat, leaving Finnian to sit in the back with the sleeping Brynlee.
Meanwhile, back in their home country.
