"Rafael has been gone for over half a year now. It's time to put the past to rest," Josephine continued smoothly. "You're still young. Find a suitable man and start over."
Tears welled in Noelle's eyes, but she knew better than to defy an edict from the matriarch of the Sanders family.
Elaine stood up and gently patted Noelle's shoulder. "Do me this favor, Noelle. Just go to the dinner. I have an engagement of my own, so I'll be leaving now."
Grabbing her purse, Elaine hurried out the door.
Noelle bit her lip hard, looking back at the older woman. "Grandmother, I don't want to..."
"Don't want to what?" Josephine cut her off sharply. "Don't want to leave the Sanders family? Or don't want to marry a divorced man?"
Noelle stiffened.
Josephine let out a cold, dismissive hum. "The recent incident caused quite a scandal. I always assumed your technical expertise at Aethelstan Biopharma was flawless, but it seems I was severely mistaken."
The brutal teardown left Noelle looking as pale as a ghost.
"Don't turn your nose up at a divorced man. Need I remind you that you're a widow? This man is a legitimate entrepreneur. He is more than a match for you. Don't act like he's the one getting the better end of the deal."
Noelle's face cycled through shades of crimson and stark white, her humiliation absolute.
"Grandmother, I've never thought I was better than anyone. I just..."
"Just what?" Josephine leaned forward, her gaze piercing now that they were alone. "Don't tell me the reason you're turning down other men is because you've set your sights on Finnian."
Noelle stopped breathing. A wave of terrified realization crashed over her.
Seeing her guilt laid bare, Josephine sneered. "Let me tell you something, Noelle."
"Finnian has no intention of getting a divorce."
