"Don't give her unhealthy snacks next time," Kaia said sternly.
Finnian's brow furrowed slightly. "Right. I understand."-
"Where's Noelle?" Kaia asked.
Finnian replied, "Noelle said she had something to do. I dropped her off after we picked up Brynlee."
Kaia heard the casual way he referred to Noelle by her first name and felt an imperceptible frown form on her face.
Although she had heard him call her that before, today it sounded particularly jarring.
"Mommy, we haven't eaten out in forever. I want to eat at a restaurant," Brynlee pleaded, wrapping her arms around Kaia's neck.
Not wanting to disappoint her daughter, Kaia nodded. "Okay."
Just then, Finnian's phone rang. He stepped away to take the call.
A few minutes later, he returned with an unreadable expression. "Something's come up with Noelle. I have to go check on her. I've already made a reservation for you and Brynlee at a restaurant. I'll join you as soon as I'm done."
Kaia was stunned. Before she could say anything, Finnian was already getting into the car.
The black Bentley merged into the flow of traffic.
"Daddy ran off again, hmph," Brynlee pouted, crossing her little arms over her chest, annoyed by her father's abrupt departure.
Seeing her daughter's sulky face, Kaia could only comfort her gently. "Daddy has something important to do. He'll definitely come join us for dinner as soon as he's finished."
Brynlee nodded her small head.
Then, she took Kaia's hand. "Mommy, let's go eat. I'm hungry."
Kaia stared at the busy street, cars streaming past.
Her heart felt as if it were being crushed by a giant rock, making it hard to breathe.
Noelle had just lost her husband. Perhaps she really did need someone to comfort her.
But should that person be Finnian?
Kaia gave a bitter, self-deprecating laugh and led her daughter to the parking garage.
