What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 438

Finnian drove Brynlee to Kaia's apartment building. Under the warm glow of the streetlamps next to the flower beds, Kaia's silhouette appeared near the ground-floor elevator.

Finnian stood by his car. Brynlee had fallen asleep against his shoulder, her small face flushed and peaceful.

Kaia walked over. In the soft light, she wore a simple set of loungewear, her long hair tied back loosely. She was entirely makeup-free and wearing soft white slippers that padded softly against the pavement.

As a cool breeze brushed past, sweeping a stray lock of hair across her cheek, she reached up and casually tucked it behind her ear.

"Hand her over," Kaia said softly. Without any unnecessary small talk, she reached out to take her daughter.

Finnian's dark eyes locked onto her as he gently transferred the sleeping girl into Kaia's arms. The little one shifted uncomfortably for a second, but upon recognizing her mother's familiar scent, she settled immediately, murmuring a sleepy "Mommy."

Kaia leaned down and kissed her daughter's soft cheek, a genuine, uncontrollable smile lifting the corners of her lips.

Then, she turned to walk away.

Seeing that she had nothing else to say to him, Finnian felt a sudden pang of loss.

"Kaia!"

Thinking he had something important to add, Kaia stopped and looked back at him.

That simple, backward glance left Finnian entirely momentarily breathless. Flustered, he merely blurted out, "Nothing. Just... get Brynlee to bed early. Tomorrow is Saturday. Do you have any plans?"

Kaia saw no reason to hide it. "I'm taking her to the amusement park tomorrow. We promised Anna."

Finnian's handsome face instantly stiffened. A playdate with little Anna meant... she was essentially going on a date with Simon Quinn?

Without waiting for his response, Kaia turned and strode toward the elevator.

Just as the doors opened and she reached out to press the button, Brynlee suddenly woke up. The little girl lifted her head, rubbing her sleepy eyes. Seeing the elevator doors about to close on her father, she frantically waved her tiny hand. "Daddy! What are you doing standing out there? Hurry up and get in! The doors are closing!"

In that split second, something deep in Finnian's chest pulled taut. His long legs carried him across the lobby in a flash, and he slipped through the closing doors just in time.
