Finnian reached for the iPad. The first photo showed the entrance to the amusement park. Kaia was bending down to tie Brynlee’s shoelaces, while Simon stood closely by, holding her purse. Celine stood next to them holding little Anna, and an elegant, sophisticated woman—Simon’s mother—watched them all with a warm smile.
The second photo was at the carousel. Kaia and Celine were riding with the children while Simon stood at the bottom, snapping photos of them. Mrs. Quinn’s gaze toward Kaia was remarkably tender. The atmosphere looked exactly like a happy family outing.
The third photo captured Kaia stepping off the roller coaster. Simon was handing her a bottle of water, and it was obvious he had already unscrewed the cap for her. These tiny, meticulous gestures were laced with a deep, undeniable devotion. As a man, how could Finnian not recognize it?
The eighth photo showed the group walking in the sunlight. Mrs. Quinn and Celine walked ahead with the kids, leaving Kaia and Simon trailing a few steps behind. They were deep in conversation, laughing and looking utterly radiant.
Finnian stared at the final photo. They looked exactly like a married couple taking their children and parents out for the weekend.
Dexter stood off to the side, holding his breath and walking on eggshells. He had already reviewed the photos before handing them over. Everyone in the pictures was beaming, especially Dr. Chavez. Lately, her mood had been incredibly bleak; it was rare to see such genuine, soul-deep happiness radiating from her.
An inexplicable wave of irritation surged through Finnian’s chest. He slammed the iPad face-down on the desk and closed his eyes.
"You see it too. Kaia likes him, doesn't she?" Finnian asked abruptly.
Dexter froze for a second before answering carefully, "Mr. Sanders, as of right now, it just looks like friends hanging out. It doesn't seem like they have an intimate relationship."
"Oh? Elaborate on that," Finnian said, opening his eyes, his voice dropping to a dangerous register.
Dexter chuckled nervously. "If they were really dating, they wouldn't go to such a public place. They would have found a quiet spot in the suburbs where no one could see them... Cough, I mean, if they were really having a secret affair, they'd hide away from the public eye."
Finnian's expression darkened instantly. Hide. Stay out of sight.
Finnian was stunned by the question. Clearly, he hadn't thought that far ahead.
"Haven't you heard the rumors flying around? People are saying that my close relationship with Noelle caused the divorce. My relationship with Noelle hasn't just suddenly become like this. I suspect someone is spreading rumors behind the scenes to make me take the fall for this failed marriage." Just mentioning it made Finnian's face darken as a ball of fire burned in his chest.
Dexter blinked, his brain struggling to process the logic. He organized his thoughts and asked, "Mr. Sanders, do you think Dr. Chavez orchestrated this whole narrative? That she wanted the public to think you were cheating with Ms. Lawrence so she could justify the divorce?"
"My relationship with Noelle... is strictly like family. You aren't suspecting us too, are you?" Finnian glared at Dexter.
Dexter jumped and let out a dry laugh. "Mr. Sanders, if I may be so bold... Since Rafael passed away, you have indeed paid a lot more attention to Ms. Lawrence. And... you might not realize it yourself, but to outsiders, your concern for her far exceeds the normal boundaries of family or a brother-in-law."
