Josephine's expression shifted instantly, and the next second, she let out a cold scoff.
Seeing his grandmother's unusual reaction, Finnian's heart sank.
"Who told you that? How could I have arranged it? In my eyes, she was never good enough for your brother," Josephine said, her face full of indignation.
Finnian's expression changed as well. "Are you telling me you really didn't set it up?"
Had Noelle lied to him? Why would she make something like that up?
Josephine rolled her eyes, turned her face away, and huffed. "Your brother was the eldest son of the Sanders family. Furthermore, when they got married, your grandfather and father were discussing having him take over the conglomerate. As the heir's marriage, how could I casually arrange something like that? The truth is, that night, your brother had been drinking. Who knows how, but he ended up in her room. The next morning, he came running to me, his clothes disheveled, begging me to let him take responsibility for Noelle. I was so furious I slapped him twice. But your brother was completely bewitched; he knelt before me, saying he took her innocence and swore he wouldn't marry anyone else. I couldn't sway him, so I finally agreed to the marriage."
Finnian's face drained of color, inch by inch. His grandmother definitely wouldn't lie to him. That meant what Noelle had told him on the third floor that day—that the old lady had orchestrated the whole thing and she had no choice—was a complete lie.
Something shattered inside Finnian. It was trust. The trust he had placed in Noelle for so many years.
Back then, her eyes had been red from crying, her voice trembling like a small, cornered animal with nowhere to run. Because of that, he had believed every word she said.
He genuinely thought his grandmother had forced Rafael into spending the night with her, and then made him marry her to integrate her into the family.
"Finnian," Josephine called out, noticing his dazed state. "Why are you asking about this all of a sudden? I thought you already knew."
Finnian finally snapped out of it, his expression grim. "I didn't know. I always thought you arranged it."
Josephine scoffed in anger. "The moment Noelle was brought into this house, I knew that girl was full of schemes. I don't like manipulative people, so why would I let her marry your brother? If you ask me, she probably knew your brother was about to take over the company, panicked, and deliberately lured him into her room. She did it entirely to find a legitimate excuse to stay. And your brother, the fool, probably genuinely fell for her."
"Grandmother, Noelle wouldn't..."
"Why do you believe her so blindly? Finnian, you really disappoint me. Even Kaia saw right through her facade, yet you always defended her. Have you ever truly understood what kind of person she is?" Josephine slapped her hand on the table in frustration. "Come talk to me when you finally see her for who she truly is."
Finnian sat frozen on the sofa.
