What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 467

Kaia's fingers instantly clamped down hard, nearly causing the steering wheel to slip. She quickly steadied herself and anxiously checked the rearview mirror to look at her daughter's face, but it was too dark to see clearly.

"Brynlee, why are you asking this all of a sudden?" She tried her hardest to keep her voice light and casual.

Brynlee was quiet for a moment. Her little hands turned the toy faster now, but she didn't answer right away. Kaia's heart was in her throat. Feeling deeply unsettled, she pulled the car over to the side of the road and turned around to look at her.

Brynlee looked up at her too, though she seemed even quieter than usual. She looked back down at her toy and murmured, "I asked Anna about it. She said her mom and dad got divorced, and now she just lives with her mom. Her dad only shows up for important holidays. But she said she's really happy because she still has her grandma and uncle who love her."

Tears instantly sprang to Kaia's eyes. She bit down hard on her lip to keep a sob from escaping. Her daughter was so small, yet so mature that it broke Kaia's heart.

"Mommy, if you and Daddy get a divorce, does that mean you'll live in different houses like Anna's parents? What about me?"

Brynlee lifted her head, her small face staring blankly at Kaia. A hint of cautious uncertainty flickered in her eyes.

Kaia slumped over the steering wheel, her heart aching as if it were being sliced open. She took a soft breath and said gently, "Brynlee, no matter what happens, Daddy and I will always love you."

"Will I stay with you, Mommy? Or will I have to go to Daddy? Because Daddy has more money than you. I asked some people, and they said whoever is more capable gets the kid. But I don't want to go with Daddy. I want to stay with you." Brynlee stared at her with utmost sincerity, tears welling up in her eyes but refusing to fall. She must have been terrified.

Kaia unbuckled her seatbelt, turned around, and gently stroked Brynlee's cheek. She then reached out and held the little girl's soft, chubby hands, which were still stained with paint. It was adorable, yet incredibly heartbreaking.

"Brynlee, Daddy and I have some problems that we just can't fix. Even if we get a divorce, you will always be our precious baby."

Brynlee saw the tears glistening in her mother's eyes. She seemed to understand, yet there was still a trace of confusion.
