What She Overheard in Her Own Marriage novel Chapter 469

The people walking past shot them curious glances and quickly picked up their pace.

"Is there something else, Mr. Sanders?" Kaia asked.

Finnian looked at her. "The situation with your brother has been handled."

Kaia nodded. "I heard. He told me you helped him out. Thank you. My family and I are very grateful for your assistance."

Hearing her say "thank you," and especially that last sentence, every single word drove home the point that he was now an outsider.

An outsider she needed to be polite and maintain a strict distance with.

"You're welcome." His voice grew uncontrollably hoarse. "If I can help, naturally I wouldn't just stand by."

Kaia nodded, her expression completely unreadable. "Still, thank you."

Finnian looked at the woman standing in front of him. She was so courteous, yet so distant, that he suddenly found himself completely at a loss for words.

"Are you free tonight? It's been a while since we took Brynlee out to dinner together. I'll make the arrangements."

Kaia paused for two seconds before agreeing. She figured this dinner would be the perfect opportunity for them to sit down and break the news of the divorce to their daughter.

Seeing that she hadn't turned him down, a faint smile touched Finnian's lips.

"Then... I'll see you tonight." With that, Finnian turned and walked out. Dexter, who had been waiting by the door, hurried in to gather the documents.

Finnian felt somewhat pathetic, having to use their daughter as an excuse just to ask her out to dinner. It felt manipulative.

But he had no choice. Kaia was incredibly stubborn. If he didn't have a perfectly valid reason, she would never agree to see him.

Kaia drove back to Veridian. Outside the window, the sky was overcast and gray, looking like it was about to rain again.

Her mind drifted back to the conversation she had with her daughter in the car the day before, and an unbearable ache bloomed in her chest.

Tonight, she and Finnian would have to face it together. It would be the final task they carried out as a united front for their child.

When the waiter came over to pour their water and asked if they wanted any recommendations, Kaia simply said she needed a moment to look.

Finnian appeared completely engaged in playing with his daughter, but his eyes kept being magnetically drawn back to Kaia.

As she looked down at the menu, her long eyelashes cast delicate, fan-shaped shadows under her eyes.

The sight instantly brought him back to their very first date. She had been so nervous back then. He had told her to order whatever she liked, and after flipping through the menu, she ended up ordering a simple cucumber salad before handing the menu straight back to him.

"You order. See what Brynlee wants. I'm fine with anything," Kaia said.

Finnian nodded and looked over the menu with Brynlee, eventually finalizing the order and handing it to the waiter.

Bathed in the warm lighting, the three of them sat together, looking like a picture-perfect family.

Finnian was genuinely savoring this moment of reunion.

But as he finally started to cherish this slice of time, his entire body stiffened. Was it really true that people only appreciated what they had when they were about to lose it?
