Right on cue, the food arrived, leaving Brynlee no time to be sad. Her favorite desserts and spaghetti had taken center stage.
Finnian fell completely silent. His gaze turned somber, carrying a distinct trace of resentment as he stared at Kaia.
Kaia simply picked up her fork, speared a piece of fried chicken from her daughter's plate, and ate it at a leisurely pace.
A heavy knot formed in Finnian's chest. The words he wanted to say rushed to his throat, only to get stuck. In the end, he swallowed them down. He refused to argue or confront his ex-wife in front of their child.
Still, he couldn't believe his daughter had accepted their divorce so effortlessly.
It wasn't what he had imagined at all. Wait, she had mentioned a little friend named Anna earlier.
That kid must have said something to Brynlee to make her let it go so easily. Was this Simon Quinn's doing?
Did Simon send his niece to brainwash Brynlee, making her think her parents splitting up was a trivial matter not worth crying over, all so he could openly pursue Kaia?
Furious, Finnian lost his appetite entirely. He simply watched Kaia enjoy the freshly served meal.
"Why aren't you eating? Is the food not to your liking?" Kaia asked with a faint smile, noticing he hadn't touched his silverware even as the fourth course arrived.
Finnian turned his face away, clearly giving her the cold shoulder.
"Dad, you picked this restaurant, and you ordered the food. Are you really not going to eat?" Brynlee asked between bites, thoroughly enjoying her meal.
How could he have an appetite?
He was full of rage.
Kaia could tell he was angry. He was probably questioning his entire reality.
But now, peering through the decorative bamboo partition, she witnessed a painfully picture-perfect scene.
Finnian was holding Brynlee, with Kaia sitting right across from them.
The warm, ambient lighting washed over them, making them look like the absolute ideal of a happy, complete family.
She immediately pressed herself against the wall, terrified that Kaia would spot her. Her grip tightened on her clutch, a suffocating wave of jealousy and resentment crashing over her.
By the time Noelle returned to the private room, the women were still buzzing about the same topic.
As she walked in, the friends looked at her with eyes full of undisguised envy.
She had touched up her makeup in the restroom and applied a fresh coat of lipstick. Forcing a radiant smile, she took her seat.
