A moment later, Noelle walked in and sat down on the opposite sofa.
Kaia looked at her. "What were you trying to say earlier? You can speak now."
Noelle took a deep breath. "Did you know he had feelings for me when we were teenagers?"
Kaia didn't reply; she merely watched her.
Noelle looked down and smiled—a look of secret triumph mixed with a hint of self-mockery. "He admitted it himself. I could tell even back then. He looked at me differently. He would subconsciously worry about me, care about who I was talking to, and get cold and distant if other guys got too close to me..."
Kaia leaned back into the sofa, her arms crossed as she listened. "And your point is?" she asked smoothly.
Noelle faltered, an inexplicable wave of panic washing over her at Kaia's profound calm.
Swallowing hard, she summoned her courage. "So, have you ever thought about why you were the one who ended up marrying him?"
"I never really thought much about it, but all the outside rumors certainly gave me a few ideas. You're trying to say I'm just your substitute, right?" Kaia calmly took a sip of her tea. "How does it feel to be completely crushed professionally by your own substitute?"
Noelle's face drained of color, her fingers violently gripping her skirt. Anger flared in her eyes. "He loved me! He'll never forget me for the rest of his life. He only married you because I married Rafael. He couldn't have me, so he had to settle for the next best thing..."
"Noelle," Kaia interrupted. "Are you bragging right now?"
"Kaia..." Noelle leaped to her feet, humiliated and enraged, her face turning an ugly shade of ash. "How can you spout such garbage? I was forced to marry Rafael! It wasn't my choice to—"
"You're awfully defensive. I must have hit the nail on the head." Kaia stared straight into her eyes. "You thought Rafael was going to be the boss, but fate dealt you a lethal blow. Rafael stepped down, Finnian took the throne, and you realized you bet on the wrong horse, didn't you?"
"I did not!" Noelle spat, her lips trembling with fury. "Stop talking nonsense!"
"Noelle, people leave traces of their actions. You can deny it all you want, but the facts speak for themselves. I don't know the exact details of how you married Rafael, but one thing is absolutely certain—it wasn't for love. And if there wasn't love, then you were after something else. The only thing left is the title of the eldest Sanders daughter-in-law. The wife of the heir."
"Shut up, Kaia!" Noelle shrieked, entirely losing her composure. "You don't know anything! Stop making things up!"
